1 out of 5 eggsComplete Junk

Pros: None

Cons: Complete Junk. After a year of dealing with this thing I have had it. After trying 6 Hard Drives, 2 Motherboards, and a Beta Version of Firmware 19119, this thing is still not even remotely stable. I have worked with LSI cards (the Perc (Dell) series of Megaraid cards for about 8 years without problems). I currently manage servers with about 18+ raid arrays with various HDD and SSD combinations, and have never seen this type of instability. I bought this card because of a motherboard incompatibility issue with LSI. I just upgraded my motherboard, which I thought might have been the issue, so all new MB/CPU hardware. Now it is even more unstable than before. Never again. Stay clear of this card if you want a stable raid controller.

Other Thoughts: I just bought the new LSI Megaraid 9341 to replace this nightmare of a card. Can't wait till it gets here.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price, but has a few issues

Pros: immeasurably faster drive speeds than any other raid card i have used, great management, good bios and software interface, gets good marks on the key points

Cons: HOT!, make sure it has a good fan near it or you will get overtemp alarms, also, makes resuming from sleep take forever (since it has to boot the raid card's bios during the resume, too a week of testing before i realized that the resume was just taking forever, I thought it was just not resuming at all)

Other Thoughts: Just a note all of my references to other raid cards are comparing to firmware cards, mobo raids, or software raids

4 out of 5 eggsSo far ok, runs quite hot

Pros: Fastest full raid built I have experienced from any cards so far (only took 10 hours compared to the 18+ from the others i have used), good performance, good options.

Cons: If you dont have extremely good airflow where you plan to install it, or be prepared to get a fan for it (luckily it fits 40mm case fans, but uses screws not often used with fans so prepare a trip to a hobby shop), took a few tries before i realized that the the username and password it was asking for during the install was the computer's admin username and password

Other Thoughts: Bios configuration was quite standard, plenty useable (possibly a bit easier to learn then the web interface) but nothing special, web interface is very detailed, but took a good 30 minutes of just poking around to find everything I wanted, and not the most responsive interface either, will post an updated review once i get my fan, apparently, installing the fan usually drops the temp by a good 30 degrees and significantly speeds up the unit

4 out of 5 eggsa little slow with ESXi

Pros: Cost effective. The flash module is the best thing ever!

Cons: The first card worked for a few days, then it started dropping the array a few minutes after a cold boot. It kept saying the configuration has changed on every reboot.

Newegg RMA'ed it without any questions. The replacement card worked as expected.

Other Thoughts: The card goes into my backup server running VMware ESXi 5.1. My main server is running on 5805. I know it's comparing apples and oranges, especially since the 5805 is connected to a 6 drive array in raid 10, with 2 hot spares, while this card is connected to a 4 drive array in raid 10.

The 5805 was able to copy a 3.2 GB ISO in the same datastore in 15 seconds using vSphere, while the 6805 took 90 seconds. Since the 5805 had 50% more drives, I would expect the copy would only be 50% faster.

I ran iometer in Win 2008 VMs on both ESXi servers, which reported the 5805 can write at 42 MB/s, while the 6405 wrote at 35 MB/s. The numbers don't make sense since the 5805 managed to copy 3.2 GB in 15 seconds.

I remember testing the 6805 back in 2011 when I was building my main server and found that its performance was horrendous with ESXi 4.1. Adaptec has fixed that problem, but it doesn't seem to be completely.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat raid card!

Pros: Great RAID card. Works with ESXi 5.1 with the proper drivers. Easy install and cool LEDs. No real complaints.

Cons: The BIOS utility didn't work how I was expecting it to work. I ended having to install Windows, install the maxView storage manager from Adaptec, and setup then Raid. But it's not really a con per say.

1 out of 5 eggsNot the controller for me.

Pros: Adaptec is a reputable brand. This controller is probably fine for mechanical / rotational hard drives.

Cons: From a performance capability perspective, this is not SSD ready. My 4 Samsung 830 128GB SSDs performed poorly on this controller no matter the raid level, even Raid 0. I get 1.5 to 2x, instead of what I expected, 3.5 to 4.x, the performance. Once I got them to work...

Controller initially didn't even recognize my Samsung 830s. Required a special non-public firmware to recognize my Samsung 830s.

Doesn't support Windows Sleep (S3), which I use quite often on my Windows 7 workstation.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdated for CentOS

Pros: Fast. smartd / smartctl work nicely in linux for monitoring drive health on numerous systems.

Cons: Prior to RHEL / CentOS 6.3 drivers were a nightmare.

Other Thoughts: My previous review was harsh and well deserved. Drivers finally showed up as native in the 6.3 release, seamless now. I've got a bunch of these in VM hosts with 8/16 core opterons and WD raptor drives in raid 10. Very fast and consistent.

5 out of 5 eggsExceptional, as epected

Pros: I bought this card along with 4 ST1000NM0001 SAS drives to go in to an ESXi 5 server. After downloading the drivers from VMWare, the installation using esxcli was simple. Remember to reinstall drivers after applying all patches or you'll just have to rinse/repeat

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought the companion flash module - while there was absolutely nothing wrong with the module, I was disappointed in the cheap zip-tie mounts. Not enough of an issue to remove a star since cosmetics are the least of my worries.

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied.

Pros: Great performance. No hardware issues with my mATX Asus Maximus IV Gene Z mobo. I'm going to assume this means that this card has high compatibility, unlike some other controllers that I've read reviews on. Comes with cables!

Cons: None so far. Will update if that changes. Does run a little hot...grab a PCI slot fan cooler. I used the one the other reviewer suggested in his post, and it works very well.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this with 4 3TB Seagate 7200rpm drives, with a 1024 stripe size (the build will be used as a media server). Ran an ATTO benchmark with a max of 634MB/s Write and 528MB/s Read. From the 1024kb-8192kb benchmark transfers, speeds were pretty consistent; +/- 10-20MB/s. Exactly what I wanted. Took about 9hrs to build/verify the array. The Adaptec Storage Manager doesn't have much functionality, but it does its job of letting you know the status of the array.

2 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely horrible RHEL/CentOS support

Pros: It's probably fast if you can get it to work

Cons: The scripts and boot disks they give you are all worthless. Seriously... worthless. The RHEL 'installer' is completely broken and you have to go with 6.0 as they don't have a version for 6.2. Still doesn't work. I'm probably going to throw this out the window and go back to the 5xxx series for my systems.

Other Thoughts: Adaptec really dropped the ball, sad. Seems like the PMC acquisition has something to do with all of this. Did they fire everyone in the support department to save money? Probably.
