Adaptec Series 6E Unified Serial SATA/SAS RAID controllers deliver the robustness of hardware RAID and the Adaptec RAID Code, enterprise class management features, and full OS support -- including open source drivers for Linux and FreeBSD -- into the entry level RAID space. Delivering the same 6Gb/s performance of the Series 6 controllers, the Series 6E are optimized for the platform where a Series 6 controller would not fit in from a price, form factor or host connectivity standpoint.

Series 6E controllers support SATA and SAS devices, and have been qualified with the same systems, motherboards, backplanes and drives as Series 6 controller. They include the same drivers, BIOS and storage management tools as Series 6 controllers and do not require additional training or qualification. Series 6E controllers are thoroughly tested with entry-level storage devices for desktop use and entry-level server platform, workstation and motherboards most typically used for basic server, performance workstation and industrial PCs.

  • newegg I/O Connectivity and Data Protection With its entry-level price point, Adaptec 6405E can be used as a connectivity product, with support for up to 4 SATA and SAS devices, and 128MB of DDR2-800 MHz DRAM cache for device acceleration. At the same time, the Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) delivers maximum reliability with RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 10 and JBOD. ARC also offers RAID Level Migration (the ability to easily migrate RAID levels), Online Capacity Expansion (expand capacity without powering down the server), and Copyback Hot Spare (when a failed drive has been replaced, data is automatically copied from the hot spare back to the restored drive).
  • newegg Hybrid RAID With Hybrid RAID 1 & 10 the Series 6E controllers offer maximum performance and reliability by combining Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives in a single array. By performing read operations from the fastest SSD and write operations on both the SSDs and HDDs it offers tremendous performance gains over standard HDD RAID arrays. By combining SSDs and HDDs it offers the benefits of both technologies and allows a better cost per GB ratio than comparable SSD only arrays.
  • newegg The Case for Cache The fastest way for a RAID controller to fulfill a read or write request is to serve data out of its cache. Savvy network administrator knows that enabling the RAID controller cache offers significant performance benefits, such as reduced latency in I/O request, bandwidth and queue depths that surpass software application limits, and on-the-fly parity calculations on sequential writes.
  • newegg Intelligent Power Management Intelligent Power Management (IPM) slashed power and cooling costs by up to 70% using intelligent I/O caching combined with disk drive power savings via standby and power-off modes.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Card

Pros: I've had this card for about a year, maybe more. So far, it has worked without fail. I've had some custom-built computers break down on me, but it has not been the case with this card (yet). I am currently using this on a RAID1 configuration with Ubuntu 14.10, which natively supports the card. It has been a year or more, so my memory is a bit foggy, but I don't recall installing any custom kernel modules for Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 support.

Cons: I do remember having to finagle a bit to install the maxview storage manager software. That didn't work out of the box unfortunately. I was able to get it going after a while. I don't have the process documented that i used though, which was something that I probably should have done as I going through it, but I suppose hindsight is 20/20.

Other Thoughts: Initially, I wasn't sure about the Ubuntu support, but glad to see that it worked out fine. I would also recommend a UPS backup just in case of power failure.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Hardware RAID for good price. Have 4 drives running a 10 RAID with no problems yet.

Cons: The only drawback of this device is the way the SATA connectors are made. Two of the drive bays in my case are oriented so that the SATA and power connectors are very close to the case wall and the connectors are somewhat folded there. I am concerned they may not last. That isn't the fault of the controller but I mention it so you are aware should you be in a similar situation.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Small Hardware Raid

Pros: This product was used to replace Software/BIOS RAID on our development hypervisors that wouldn't work with VMWare ESXi. This product worked flawlessly. For the most part it was plug and go. The management screen is clean, minimal, and easy to setup arrays and deal with disk management.

Cons: ESXi device driver support documentation could be better.
Long Firmware POST, but honestly a nonissue.

Other Thoughts: I was so impressed with the card and the performance, I want to get one of these for my personal gaming rig.

4 out of 5 eggsResponse to Richard on 12-04-14

Pros: Lowers CPU load for running a RAID 5 setup.

Cons: Long system boot-up showing Highpoint screen. Customer Support a bit difficult to navigate.

Other Thoughts: Overall a very good card especially for the money.

1 out of 5 eggsSad But true

Pros: Work with windows 7 ...

Cons: Will NOT work with Windows Server 2008. This is know and verified by adaptec: http://ask.adaptec.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15350/kw/6405e%20install%20windows%20server%202008

Other Thoughts: You'd think that Microsoft and Adaptec would work these issues out.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic card

Pros: Wanted this for hardware mirroring of SATA disks on my ESXi server. ESXi came with a driver for this. It was very easy using the included instructions to install the newer driver that came with the card.

Cons: Really have to have the included cable to connect to drives. I do not know why any one would purchase the card with out the cable harness. Not a standard cable interface.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat tool, freed space, better airflow

Pros: I run my Desktop 724 and it has been performing very well, it was ez to install even in my "tiny" HPE-110F. It took away much cabling confusion and improved airflow. It was ez to setup with the supplied software.

Cons: AFAIK my research tells me RST from Intel is not supported at this price point / model..

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Performance with Raid 10 is amazing, firmware and drivers install no issues, have used with SBS 2008, SBS 2011, Server Standard 2012, have used with ASUS Server and Desktop Motherboards, not a single hiccup, one of the first reviews had issues with an earlier firmware, not here and I have used about 15 of these cards in the past year and half, price/performance makes it a perfect raid card for a Server in a Small Business or Medical Clinic.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I run a computer business and first couple of servers I used onboard Raid. Switched to this card and haven't looked back

5 out of 5 eggs5 months 24/7

Pros: Easy to configure. Excellent performance.
Activity LED pinout allows usage of LED's on hot swap bays.
Easy to use software.

Cons: 5 months running 24/7 and not a single failure. No cons here.

Other Thoughts: I am running four Western Digital 2TB caviar black drives in RAID10 (Striped over mirrored)
These are being utilized for media storage that is accessed every day.

Note about TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery)
It seems there is a lot of confusion about the western digital drives and RAID. If you are using RAID0, RAID1, or RAID10 you do not need a drive with TLER. In fact you don't want to have it since these forms of raid do not fix errors and you want the drive to fix them as soon as possible.
This means you don't have to buy those more expensive enterprise class drives if you don't plan on running raid that is error correcting.
Thought I'd put this here since it took me a while to research and get a definite answer.

5 out of 5 eggsPhenominal performance, lots of features!

Pros: -Hardware RAID
-SATAIII / SATA3 / SATA 6Gbps native support
-Multiple RAID levels of support
-Actually allows mixing of SSD & HDD units in a RAID configuration with autobalance on speed and storage
-**Tons of features in Adaptec BIOS, and I LOVE OPTIONS**
-Supported my Crucial m4 SSD's in RAID0 flawlessly
-Runs up to 4 devices using the miniSAS->SATA connector, and on PCI-E x1 !
-Red activity LEDs on board, option to also turn them off
-Comes with half-height bracket

Cons: -This particular model doesn't have a battery, so MAKE SURE YOU USE A BATTERY BACKUP because upon power failure it loses data it's working on (it has 128MB onboard RAM) if you choose to enable use of it in the Adaptec BIOS

-Doesn't have a heatsink/fan, relies on case cooling (my Antec Twelve Hundred keeps it at below 30 degrees Celsius regardless of room temp)

Other Thoughts: -It does not take longer than 10 seconds to boot the Adaptec BIOS with my 2 SSD's in RAID0 upon normal startup

-Remember you can install a PCI-E x1 card into a x4, x8, or a x16 slot (provided they aren't sharing IRQ/DMA addresses...I wouldn't install this card on a Crossfire/SLI motherboard's x16 slot with the other slot being used by a graphic's card).

-obtain the HWMonitor from CPUID.org (free is fine) to check temperatures of the card. It appears on the bottom of the list in HWMonitor, but it may take a few minutes to show you full details (it provided the temperature of the card, the drives, and the airflow temp).

-Obtain Acronis Drive Monitor from Acronis.com , this will give you S.M.A.R.T. warnings.

-Backup as often as possible using bare-metal software, such as Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Workstation (which I use), *DAILY.* Takes me 10 mins on max compression and AES 256-bit encryption with verification to backup my 128GB SSD partition (40% full) to a WD VR
