4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Service

Pros: THis is an overdue review. The company is awesome. I had bought this in 2012 and didn't have time to install it in my system until mid 2013. It gave me trouble and I couldn't figure it out.

I emailed the company and they tried to help to no avail. They were ready to RMA it back and give me my money back when the CEO of the company emailed the tech helping me to send me a replacement at no-cost...to see if it would fix my issues.

Unfortunately it didn't...but I appreciate the help and service for sure. I still have both cards.

Cons: Unfortunately it didn't work with my Win 7 64bit with Gigabyte mobo system.

Other Thoughts: I am going to try again with full re-install.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work at all for me

Pros: 4-slots....if they worked

Cons: Bought this card simply for the extra SATA slots. Didn't even mess with RAID and it destabilized my whole system. 80% of the time it would lock everything up during the windows load screen (I'm using 7 64bit) and it would just stay there. The few times the OS decided to load there were "E"s everywhere on the screen...literally the letter E...everywhere. Weird stuff. The few times I made it to the desktop it didn't perform any better. Once i started copying to/from a drive it would take about 60 seconds before a system message would appear saying the drive was no longer available.

Other Thoughts: I stayed up until dawn trying to figure this one out. Installed both new and old drivers, flashed newest RAID bios, everything. The thing works fine if you unplug all connections, but if any drives are plugged in (i.e. you're actually using the card) everything goes down the drain quick.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Used card to build a file server running freebsd 9.1. Wanted to use a 1.5 TB drive but had no sata port on an old Intel motherboard. This card worked great. Easy to set up following included instructions.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsHeads up - weird packaging

Pros: Box contains advertised product (ISO-PSA420)

Cons: "All images on the packaging may differ from the actual product"
Shrink-wrapped box shows 2 internal SATA and 2 eSATA ports, not 4 internal ports
"This interface available on specific models only"
The specifications are generic to the point of useless, and appear to be a laundry list of all potential features across the product line

Other Thoughts: I have not installed this yet (planned to support a RAIDZ2 array). However I almost RMA'ed it because the packaging described a completely different product, both in the image and the specifications. This does not inspire a high level of confidence in the company; it saves a few cents per box, but I'd guess I'm not the first to start the RMA process.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly

Pros: Inexpensive, no-nonsense installation, plenty fast for my raid-1 Plextor SSD drives in email server, works in Dell Optiplex 380 (yay!)

Cons: Box was pretty empty (card, errata, CD) but the install was easy and I'm glad the included errata sheet showed where the drivers were located on the CD.

Other Thoughts: I first tried the Rocketraid 640 sata3 but it wouldn't work in either computer I had on-hand. So I got this and plugged into a Dell Optiplex 380's PCI slot and worked instantly. I put the SSD drives in raid1 configuration. The raid bios options are pretty basic, but do just what I need. This card is sata2 and speeds with the Plextor drives are 214write and 230read.

4 out of 5 eggsOld Dell doesn't like it

Pros: Works like a champ in other systems I've tested it with.

Cons: Dell Poweregde 1600c doesn't like it. Won't even see it in BIOS. I may try again in a few days/weeks when the server isn't under use as much again, but I'm not optimistic considering Dell's notoriously limited hardware compatibility with their servers.

Other Thoughts: Would be great if it did work in the server. Having faster access to the SATA drives in it (currently on a SATA-1 controller) would be great. I'll save this card for other systems though.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, but not with others

Pros: Faster than my motherboard, hot-swap, simple bios, reliable: (its running 24x7 with no issues for 14 months+), 4 sata ports.

Cons: You can not put more than one of these in the same box: I needed to add another 4 sata ports for my WHS machine. I picked up the exact same model card. Everything seemed to be fine except the bios report that it can not find device. The drivers installed correctly and WHS said there were no conflicts. But whenever I installed 1-4 drives, they were never found.

Other Thoughts: I needed 8 sata ports, so I upgraded to the RocketRaid for $99. It works great, no issues

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well with Linux RAID

Pros: Mandriva Linux recognized the controller, and mdadm (the Linux software RAID administration software) incorporated the connected disks flawlessly. Recommend for light to moderately-loaded file servers

Cons: None -- works as desired.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't use this on a file server that must meet heavy load or stringent latency requirements. It's best for home and small office use, where load is light, moderate latency is tolerable, and low cost is paramount. Audio and video playback is fine over a 100Mb network, so go for it!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cheap card

Pros: Cheap, great card. No Cons at this point. It does the job for me.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Unless you want a high end card, then you will need to spend the cash. If you just need a card that works without all the bells and whistles, I'd recommend this one.

YES this is software RAID. Do not expect outstanding test results from this card.

4 out of 5 eggsRAID on Linux

Pros: Linux drivers (sata_sil24) are in the Redhat & CentOS 5.x kernel/modules for this card and all the drives are found without problems. Should be the same for most distributions. Big positive.

Cons: Drives present themselves individually (google search for fakeraid). CentOS 5.x builds the RAID array using /dev/mapper and there are some performance issues versus using the software raid (dmadm). Rebuilt using the software raid due to this and how I use the system.

Other Thoughts: By using software raid that comes with linux, and leaving one of the drives on the existing SATA port on the motherboard, the second on this card, read/write throughput almost doubles (stats from atop while drives re-synced and large filesystem copies).

If you are only using linux as your OS, would hightly recommend the software raid. If dual booting between linux and windows, then this gives you the option to have both.
