2 out of 5 eggsThis is perfect for WINDOWS ONLY JBOD applications.

Pros: Cheap, affordable, free shipping is a major plus. Installation was simple. Windows automatically downloaded and installed drivers. This is perfect for JBOD applications.

Cons: GUI software is JAVA based. The RAID support in this thing is totally software based and there is no controller configuration outside of the host operating system. Running these dirt-cheap imitation raid cards in RAID mode is a terrible idea if you want performance. Outside of Windows, it nagged that only had one drive was attached. It DOES NOT support the port multiplier ability through BIOS. Device supports port multiplier through WINDOWS ONLY!

Other Thoughts: I set it up as JBOD. Hooked up to one SANS DIGITAL TR4M, when I copy to it, aside from being very slow, every 20 minutes or so it freezes and doesn't start again until Windows times out and resets it after a couple of minutes. When hooked up to two SANS DIGITAL TR4M, the issues seemed to subside. I bought two cards, RMA’ed one (return shipping cost almost as much as the card).

5 out of 5 eggsSiI 3132 Serial ATA Raid II Controller

Pros: This is an SiI 3132 Serial ATA Raid II Controller based pci express card with two eSATA ports. For everyone with SATA II based JBOD enclosures running modern Linux, these cards tend to be very reliable compared to other SATA II chips with port multiplier support.

Cons: I have had none

Other Thoughts: I read through the 1 egg reviews for this card. They all seemed to be windows related complaints. The RAID support in this thing is totally software based and there is no controller configuration outside of the host operating system.

I currently operate two of these chips, this card and another manufactures version with a different pcb layout, both with dual eSATA ports, in a system running zfs-on-Linux with one Sans Digital JBOD connected to each, the zpool consisting of mirror vdev with disks split between the controllers. I see sustained write performance of 60+ MB/s to 7200 RPM WD red drives, and read performance is significantly higher than that. *These are trivial read/write tests* and were gained using dd and clearing caches between runs on a system with a postgress database for zabbix data monitoring about 10 systems, as well as logstash collecting data for elasticsearch. TPS throughput on iostat showed 200-400 per disk during the testing for both reads and writes.

1 out of 5 eggsFreezes too Much

Pros: Cheap, mostly works between bus resets.

Cons: I set it up as JBOD and used Windows 8 Storage Spaces to make a RAID set out of it. When I copy to it, aside from being very slow (which might be the disk drives, and which in any cases I expected from such an inexpensive part) every 20 minutes or so it freezes and doesn't start again until Windows times out and resets it after a couple of minutes. If you don't plan on running it much, it's probably OK, but the resets get old fast.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Windows 2012R2 driver

Pros: Not any.

Cons: Previous reviews said this device would work in Windows 8 but does not in Windows Server 2012R2. GUI software does not install. I just need a eSATA card for JBOD. This has been the second card with no compatibility.

Other Thoughts: Will update when manufacturer responds but since Windows 8.1 is of the same code base it will not work either.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA and waiting

Pros: None yet

Cons: Card is DOA. I sent a note to Koutech but have not heard from them yet. Thank goodness I bought from Newegg. Will give them a chance and then will have to RMA.

Other Thoughts: I was looking for an inexpensive card with the 3132 chipset. This was cheap enough but does not work. Delivery from Newegg was prompt as usual.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome JBOD card with Windows 8

Pros: * Windows 8 compatibility (replaced a RocketRAID 622 causing BSODs)
* Came with latest BIOS
* Windows auto installed the latest drivers
* Sil3132 drivers let you flash the card BIOS right from Device Manager
* Rock solid throughput even between 2 port multiplier external enclosures on the same card
* Boot delay from Sil3132 is MUCH lower than RocketRaid 622 (Marvell 88SE9128)

Cons: None if you want JBOD. Running these dirt cheap fakeraid cards in RAID mode is a terrible idea if you want performance.

Other Thoughts: I have two external port multiplier enclosures connected to this card. One SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR5M-BP with 5x2TB Samsung F4 drives, and one Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox with 4x1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 drives. I have a Windows 8 parity Storage Space across all of the F4s, and a Drive Bender pool with all of the 7200.11s. Copying terabytes of data from the Storage Space to the Drive Bender pool resulted in a steady 90+MB/s.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not support port multiplier RAID

Pros: Works ok as an Esata card only.

Cons: Drivers are difficult to find, included disc has drivers for a dozen different devices. Had to go to website for drivers. Device supports port multiplier through WINDOWS ONLY. It DOES NOT support it through BIOS, so if you're trying to do RAID from a single enclosure, it will not work.

Other Thoughts: Works ok as an ESATA card, but all raid and port multiplier fuctions are pretty much useless. I didn't buy this card, so I could be forced to use windows software mirroring.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy Installation & OK on JBOD/Passthrough Mode

Pros: This card is being used on my desktop running Win 7 64-bit OS. The card driver was included included in the product CD. Easy installation.

I am using it on passthrough/JBOD mode, with an eSata 4-drive exterior case (Sans Digital Towerraid TR4M). No RAID, just as an eSata connector with port multiplier.

(I am using this card as a replacement for a RocketRaid 622 eSata RAID controller card (from HighPoint Tech) that came bundled with the Sans Digital Towerraid TR4M -- the RocketRaid card was very difficult to configure, and I gave up on it).

Cons: Manufacturer's (Koutech) website is hard to navigate, and did not have the latest version of the driver available for download.

Instruction included in the box is minimalist. It talks about using the RAID GUI application to set up JBOD mode, etc. I didn't do that -- Just installed the card and the driver, and connected the external drive case with 2 HDD's, and the card just worked -- it found the HDDs.

Other Thoughts: Works well so far, connecting my desktop to the external enclosure with 2 drives via eSata on JBOD/Passthrough mode.

I am not using RAID functionality, so can't comment on the same.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with Dell Optiplex 990

Pros: None; does not work with my computer.

Cons: Does not work with a Dell Optiplex 990. Contacted support and they initially seemed to care. They sent me another card to see if it was a bad card or if it was incompatible with my computer. After I reported that the replacement card didn't work "Kek" quit responding to my emails. Now I'm past the Newegg return period and stuck with 2 cards that don't work.
