Asus packs a lot of power into a small package with the RS500-E6/PS4 server barebone system. It's based on the new Intel 5500 chipset and accepts up to 2 Intel Xeon 5500 series processors with 2 or 4 cores each. To support all the processing power you can install up to 96GB ECC registered or 96GB unbuffered DDR3 1066/1333MHz memory.

This system has been certified to support VMWare virtualization applications, helping small to medium sized businesses reduce TOC and simplify central management. An onboard vertical USB connector lets you connect a USB flash drive and load the VMWare hypervisor off flash memory for faster deployment of new servers. Two PCIe x16 slots will allow for flexible expansion later on, and another slot for optional PIKE cards brings seamless upgrade to SAS storage. The motherboard has 6 SATA II ports and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 for better data protection. Four hot-swap bays let you change out drives as needed.

All this fits into a slim 1U chassis. The whole thing is powered by a 600W single 80PLUS power supply so the system will get all the power that it needs. Asus EPU technology delivers system-wide power efficiency by intelligently adjusting power in real time to ensure the best power management.

  • newegg Supports Dual Intel Xeon 5500 Series With dual LGA 1366 sockets, the Asus RS500-E6/PS4 supports up to two multi-core Intel Xeon 5500 Series processors, providing the computing platform capability necessary for your increasing computing demand.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Server

Pros: Decent Price, Up and running in a couple minutes. Unlike the other posters it's coming with the updated bios, so I was able to put in my Xeon x5675 CPU and it worked perfectly fine.

Cons: Takes a little long to start posting, when you turn it on or reboot it, it just hangs for about 30 seconds before even showing any video on the screen, not really terrible because I expect servers to take a little longer to boot up and we don't reboot them that much, but it's just weird that it does that. Maybe it's an Asus thing, because I purchased an Asus tower barebones server similar specs to this one and it does the same thing.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat products, bad support

Pros: Awesome server

Cons: Support is no good. Received server with old version bios and was trying to contact asus for bios upgrade for a week. No reply...

Other Thoughts: Had to buy e5502 in order to upgrade bios for e5620 support.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Good design
- No bad reviews
- ASUS
- 12 slots for ram

Cons: - Sucks if you got hardware with older version of bios and you are going to use 56xx xeon.

Other Thoughts: Purchased mine with hope that it will have newer version of bios. But no it had to had < 906 version. So now I have to purchase 55xx CPU upgrade to latest bios and only then i can use my E5620s on it.

On other hand why asus haven't came up with auto bios update feature? I mean it would be good. Plug it into network and start. If bios is old then in few seconds vaula and you have latest bios.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Custom Server

Pros: Works great with VMWare ESXi 4 U1, easy to work inside, lots of flexibility with parts and configurations.

My first complete custom build ESX Server and I am highly impressed with the ASUS brand so far.

Cons: No Hardware RAID out of the box, if you plan on getting one of these for use with VMWare either get a PIKE addon card OR plan on only using it with a USB Flash Device.

Internal USB for USB Installed VMWare is very small (about 1 inch of space), if you plan on using it plan for a micro USB Flash Drive.

Came with an old BIOS installed, so don't forget to flash it to current before use.

Other Thoughts: My config worked flawlessly with the following items:
