1 out of 5 eggsSpend more and get the 1078

Pros: Cheap, and gives access to all 8 of the SAS/SATA ports to which i hooked up 4x 15,000 drives with 29 pin SAS to 2 SATA plugs.

Cons: I went through 3 trying to get them to be able to create/read an array of drives without any luck Sometimes it would read a couple drives, next time it would read different drives, never was i able to consistently use these SAS hard drives and the only way i could use the system was by utilizing the standard SATA ports and a RAID configuration with that controller.

Other Thoughts: Save yourself the time and hassle, spend a little more and get the hardware LSI Raid chip in the 1078, you will get much better performance. If you somehow make this 1068 work, congrats!

(I tried each one on 2 separate Asus Z8PE-D12 boards, all of the 15,000 RPM drives i used work perfectly fine now)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works as advertised. I have it configured for a Raid-0 with WD Raptors, Raid-1 with WD Greens, and an external eSATA. No issues - plug it in and go. (And I still have 3 ports open)

Cons: None to date.

Other Thoughts: Raid configuration was easy and straight forward. I would buy this again. (Motherboard is Z8NA-D6)

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great with VMware

Pros: plug it in and it works. Using with VMware vSphere with no issues. Tested Raid 0, 1, and 1E - all work fine.

Cons: Limited documentation. No ability to create logical disks (I exceeded 2TB which doesn't work for VMs - and I could find no way to shrink it).

Other Thoughts: 2 Arrays max. Seems to work just fine. Haven't done any speed tests but seems to perform fine for a home setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine on P7F-E

Pros: I had no problems using this card. It plugs into the PIKE slot on the Asus P7F-E and just works. The BIOS screens are simple, and I created a integrated RAID1 array easily. The Fusion MPT driver in the mainline Linux kernel supports this card. The mpt-status command shows the status of the device.

Cons: The LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) for Linux is 32-bit. The mrmonitord program segfaults and will not run. The main application, which is Java-based, will startup and run. I am trying to use MSM on Slackware64-current with multilib compat32 packages. I can run lots of 32-bit software with no problems, but mrmonitord will not run. I feel like the MSM package could use a full update to support 64-bit and have a generic linux installation support. As it is, it has only very specific support in the form of RPM packages for specific Red Hat or Suse versions. To install, I had to use the rpm command, not the install scripts.

The card comes with no support bracket hardware to hold it into the PIKE slot. It fits fairly secure into the PIKE slot, but would be vulnerable to getting pushed on and bent while in the slot. It really should some with the support bracket, like the PIKE 1078 appears to.

Other Thoughts: The Fusion MPT linux kernel module won't use MSI interrupts by default, and so it was sharing an interrupt with another device. There is a module option to make it use MSI interrupts, but since this is used to boot the system it needs to be compiled-in and then kernel module options are not able to be used? I got it to use MSI interrupts by editing mptbase.c and finding "case SAS" and hard coding "ioc->msi_enable = 1;" into the driver. It has been working fine, and no interrupts in the system are shared.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Good

Pros: Works great for small to medium servers that are not a high load. Perfect choice for VMWare implementations with NAS or iSCSI SANs, since you only need your local space to be RAID 0,1,1E anyway.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Just remember this does not have a RAID 5 option.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good industry standard Raid Controller

Pros: Just plug it in and it works.
Very common 1068E chipset that works on most O/S's with no issues or additional drivers.
Relatively inexpensive Raid controller.
Supports SAS or SATA drives.
Handles hot-spares.

Cons: All 1068E's only support a max of 2 arrays.
No documentation on ASUS's web site.

Other Thoughts: If you are familiar LSI's 1068E chip and only need a few arrays of Raid 0, 1 or 1E then don't hesitate to get this one. If you are running a Unix type of O/S you can also support un-configured drives that are attached to the controller as JBOD so you can have 2 arrays plus JBOD drives. Normally windows drivers will only support arrays.
I knocked off 1 egg because I was expecting to get this card included with a motherboard purchase that had a wrong description on Newegg's site so I had to buy it separate.
