2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't support UEFI

Pros: Supports many RAID option such as RAID 10 over 6+ disks

Cons: Does not support UEFI so you can't make a big boot array.

1 out of 5 eggsbad design

Pros: The cooling part is facing the wrong side! It rip off the space of my other PCI card. This happens on my server board KPGE-k16, ironically from same manufactor, ASUS.

Cons: Not even bother to run, no idea if it works. Think it should work.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent RAID Controller

Pros: This is an excellent piece of hardware for the ASUS server motherboards. It plugs right into the PIKE slot and very easy to set up with the disc. It recognizes all of the SATA ports on my board and was user friendly. Highly recommended!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: ASUS motherboards are excellent. It is always recommended to use hardware to manage RAID vs. Software

4 out of 5 eggsNIce card at a good price if you have aPIKE slot

Pros: - Good price - hard to find an 8-port SAS/SATA readl hardware RAID at this price
- Doesn't use up a PCI-E slot
- Has PCI-E 8x internal interface - only documented in the manual!
- Just works in Linux with the mpt2sas module

Cons: - You need a PIKE slot - proprietary interface which I have only seen on my Asus server board
- LSI software for Linux is only aimed at RPM-based distros

Other Thoughts: I am using this on my Asus KGPE-D16 server board (Dual Opteron 6300, 48GB RAM). I am not using the RAID features at all - just exposing my SATA3 disks as JBOD. I tried to fiddle with the LSI Linux RAID / Adapter management software, but it is too clunky and not aimed at Debian distros
To boot from a disk on this controller, you need to enter the LSI config in the BIOS and select the disk you want to boot from and make it 'bootable'. Then it appears in the BIOS boot options

3 out of 5 eggsPCIE is huge bottleneck

Pros: Easy to set up, just works. 6 Kingston HyperX SSDs running like a champ. Doesn't take a normal PCIE slot.

Cons: PIKE slot in my Z9PE-D16/2L is Gen3x4, which is 4GBytes/sec peak theoretical. I should have checked the LSI chipset details before I bought it. If I had seen it was Gen2, I would have passed. ATTO peaks out at 1.5 GBytes/sec with 6 Kingston HyperX SSDs. More than 3 is a waste.

Other Thoughts: PIKE 2208 uses a Gen3x8 for 8 GB/sec peak, but limited to 4 in PIKE slot. Still the wrong answer. Skipping PIKE, going for x8 PCIE slot card and a real controller.

4 out of 5 eggsGood RAID performance with tricky BIOS setup

Pros: Once configured, RAID performance is excellent.

Cons: RAID BIOS configuration is tricky.
Disables motherboard's integrated Intel RAID controller.
Slows down system boot time.

Other Thoughts: Performance is good after making it through the rather fuzzy RAID BIOS configuration. Once installed, this controller card disabled the motherboard's integrated Intel RAID controller, so be warned that some integrated SATA ports are lost when this ASUS card is used.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Fit

Pros: Fit right into my ASUS RS300-E7/PS4, and allows passthough for VMWare... adds 8 SATA3 ports...awesome.

Cons: doesn't come built on the MotherBoard... and had to unscrew 1 screw to put it in.

1 out of 5 eggsMinor Problem Destroys 10/1E RAID

Pros: In principle and format this is seems to be a well thought out RAID SAS controller, in practice it is more a toy than a serious product.

Cons: The subject RAID was set up with 3x SAS WD6000BKHG drives, as 10/1E. The net space was less than 50% of the 3x 600GB. The controller took > 40 hr to disk check used and free space of < 900GB. Subsequently a loose power cable to one drive resulted in a controller noted fault of "FAILED" at boot up, but with only seconds without power the controller was unable to recover the drive. Several attempts to recover the RAID drive, with RAID states that ranged from "FAILED" to "REBUILDING" to "INITIALIZING" then back to "FAILED".

The controller was unable to recover from the type of drive loss it is designed to protect against. The result is may hours of wasted time.

This controller is more a toy than a server quality controller. So why offer it as a RAID controller specifically designed to fit a server MB?

Other Thoughts: The Pike line of RAID controllers should be offered with alternative RAID technologies.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Minor Caveat

Pros: A nice little card that gets you some real hardware RAID power for very little money.

Cons: Be aware, of course, that due to the lack of battery-backed write cache, the RAID 10 solution provided by this card is not appropriate for virtual machine host servers. You will get terrible performance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Card

Pros: A real bargain, the stand-alone LSI 9211-8i costs 100 bucks more. Comes with IR (RAID) firmware, and is a true hardware RAID with a PowerPC 440 chip embedded. When I updated the firmware and BIOS (from LSI site) I switched to the IT (JBOD) firmware since I am using Linux software RAID. Using an Asus P7X-E as a home fileserver with SATA drives, very cool to be able to connect up to 14 devices!

Cons: Comes with 8 short (10 inch) SATA cables. Not really a con, I saved them to use in small cases. No firmware/BIOS updates are available from Asus, had to go to LSI site to get the latest.

Other Thoughts: Cards seem to be scarce, often Out of Stock, but NewEgg emailed me when they became available. Excellent service as always. PIKE slot is PCI-Express X4, plenty of bandwidth for my purposes. Trivial install, mpt2sas driver included in most Linux distros, card was recognized with no action on my part.
