3 out of 5 eggs1 out of 2

Pros: Great price. Lots of great value here. I got 2 for a load balancing project and all in I got a solid state - 8 gb - 4 core server for 700 bucks each.

Cons: 1 of the 2 units I bought failed. 4 short beeps and it wont boot. I ordered a new motherboard for the second unit - hopefully it will work as a replacement. I wish I could get my $ back and just get a new unit though.

5 out of 5 eggsBeware - by the right RAM

Pros: Works as expected - once you have the right RAM. Pretty good value for the money. I built this as a little rack server, with SSD for portability in a portal rack. Added http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117288 and I'm seeing very good performance.

Cons: Doesn't say it needs registered DIMM. Got this and it worked:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820403042

Be sure your RAM is low profile to fit in the 1U case. All eggs given since it's NewEgg's fault for not showing the correct RAM spec. Can't blame the manufacturer.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Choice

Pros: Nice, compact package that would have been good as an Untangle appliance.

Cons: Would not perform POST. Long, short short beep code that indicates and electrical or memory failure on both the first one we purchased and the replacement Newegg sent in the RMA. I've tried three different brands of ECC registered, non-buffered memory, including Kingston, which is on the 90s-era "approved vendors" list.

ASUS motherboards are great in desktops, but they evidently can't make a server motherboard.

Other Thoughts: This is a simple setup -- Core i3 chip, 4GB RAM and the dual ethernet ports are exactly what we need for our Untangle box (www.untangle.com). This has cost me a month of delay. I will never look at another ASUS server again. They are just paper weights.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after two days of tests

Pros: Nice and simple layout, small factor, lite.

Cons: After two days of tests, on the day of an installation the motherboard fails to post with four (4) short beeps. ASUS Tech support provided basic suggestions like clearing CMOS, unplugging everything but essentials and then quickly recommended returning to NEWEGG (not an option at this point) or requesting RMA.

We've stayed away from ASUCS for a while and that was a test shot. The good news is that didn't happen a week AFTER the deployment. Test it well folks. Not meant for production environment where your reputation is at stake.

PS ASUCS Manual doesn't have beep codes for troubleshooting, who needs it anyway, right?

5 out of 5 eggsUnbeatable price for 1U server

Pros: Small, quiet, easy to manage. Impossible to beat pricewise if you need a reliable rackmount server. Runs Vmware ESXi with no problems. I have it loaded with 16gigs of ram, not a single problem.

Cons: No drive trays or tool-less screws. Can't really complain for the price though.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT BUY!

Pros: You can't beat the price on this 1u server. Very easy to setup as well. I have 2 of these and they're running very nicely.

- Low power consumption
- Easy to setup
- 1u
- UNBEATABLE price

Cons: - Only works with unbuffered ECC ram. Though they're fairly easy to find
- Does not work w/ Windows Server 2012 w/o flashing Bios

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Server for the $$

Pros: I have 15 of these running VOIP and have never had a moment of issue with these running Linux. (Suse, RHEL, Ubuntu)
Rock solid performance.
Tech support has always handled all of my issues and gone above and beyond expectations..

Cons: If you fail 2 post with these I would almost guarantee it is a BIOS version issue.. I had an office I was setting up with TS100's (same motherboard but 4U case, newegg was out of the RS100's) and the BIOS's where older versions and all servers failed to POST because the CPU was much newer than the BIOS.
ASUS support offered to regular mail me 5 bios chips for free.. I needed 5 so I convinced them since I had 5 chips to overnight them for free and it really didn't take much arm twisting she just had to talk to her boss.

Other Thoughts: The kingston 8gb ram kit Newegg #N82E16820139262 works GREAT in these. I burn in with memtest86 for 24-48 hours and have never had an issue.

With 15 RS100-X7's and 5 TS100's (same motherboard) running various applications in several remote offices I have yet (knock on wood) to experience even the slightest hardware issue once the systems are up and running.

As far as the DVD Tray comments go if you want a DVD version of this server order the ASUS RS100-E7/PI2 its the same server with a DVD-RW. Don't complain that you were too cheap to spend the money on a DVD in the first place.

I just wish newegg carried spare power supplies for these just in case.

As far as the Windows Server 2012 reviews go I didn't realize we where blaming hardware manufactures for Microsoft's shooty programming. Either way if you need server 2012 lookup ASUS support and ask them they actually answer the phone. They might have a BIOS by now that fixes whatever Microsoft broke.

5 out of 5 eggspfsense servers

Pros: Great case layout
Included PSU
Included Rails
Motherboard is a decent server motherboard (P8B-X)
Supports cheaper Corei3 CPUs or server grade Xeons
Uses ECC RAM
Plenty of SATA ports
Includes the CPU cooler and PCI-e riser card

Fits flush in the rack...unlike the guy mentioned before

Cons: No hot swap drives in front
No ability to mount SSDs or 2.5" drives. I had to use one screw and mount it. Not horrible....just annoying

Other Thoughts: I used this box for pfsense 2.0.3 with a Intel Quad 1000 NIC from eb@y. Great system that is plenty powerful for lots of VPN and many subnetworks with the extra NIC card.

Also, a note about the server not fitting "flush" as a different reviewer mentions. This server fits flush as long as you just lay the rails over the "ears" for the server. This allows you to both properly mount the server and to properly push it into the rack. Yes...it is over the ear and might seem odd for a moment....but just rack it like you would think and you'll notice it will work 100%.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome server

Pros: I was hesitating to buy this barebone after reading the reviews. This server is very silent and is installed in a tripp-lite 12U rack. I am using Xeon 1230 V2 on this motherboard and is pretty much plug and play without any BIOS updates.

Cons: Nothing so far

Other Thoughts: buy this kingston memory N82E16820139077. Dont waste your time and money on anything else. I bought a samsung module listed on the ASUS vendor list for this server and received 1 long 3 short beeps after installing.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty decent

Pros: Price, 80+ power supply, included rails.

Cons: Drive mounting is awkward, only SATAII, super finicky about memory modules.

Other Thoughts: You can read the memory specs until you're blue in the face but unless you pick memory from the vendor list on the ASUS website, you're likely to fail. Actually achieving the 32GB memory limit is tricky as there are very very few 8GB sticks that will work with this system and even fewer places that sell them.

I have this configured with 16GB of Kingston memory, 2x WD Velociraptor HDDs, and a Xeon E3-1240 V2 and it flies. I had no trouble getting the V2 to work on the included BIOS.
