1 out of 5 eggsOne DOA, another self-rebooting

Pros: Well, it was an awesome price point for the features.... if it had worked. Asus support was easy to contact though. They answered my support call right away, and the guy I talked to was knowledgeable and even tested the behavior I was describing against the same server live on his end. Told me my motherboard was bad.

Cons: It didn't work. One server was DOA. The other server would flash the Asus logo screen during boot 7-8 times. It would cycle between the Asus logo and BIOS text. Bootup took a very long time, minutes before it would start to load the OS. I called Asus Server Support and they told me I had a bad motherboard.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. Maybe I just coincidentally got two lemons. Maybe. I really wanted the Asus to be a good server because of how cheap it was. Now I'm headed for Lenovo RD540 probably, next closest thing. At the time of writing this NewEgg didn't have any Asus RS700s in stock and none on backorder... so clearly they aren't that popular, perhaps this is why?

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb ESXi Box

Pros: Great ESXi5.x Box, VMware HCL Supported, Platinum Plus Power Supplies for Low power

Integrated KVM with Remote Media mount allow for remote OS installs and ESXi configuration.

Dual PCIexpress x16 Gen3 card allow for dual HBA's, and Intel 4-port Gigabit LAN on-board

Cons: Does take a considerable ammount of boot up time, but not really a Con per say, as all server boards to take a while to boot.

Other Thoughts: Bought a few so far, and will be buying more to built out my businesses VMware environment.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat virtualization box

Pros: Running vsphere 5.x on 2 of these boxes in a cluster with 128GB of ram each in them and 2 E5-2609 CPUs. Works like a charm, integrated quad GB ports work perfectly. Everything is seen and works with vsphere 5.x

Cons: Boot up takes a little bit.

Other Thoughts: I could have bought 3 or 4 of these boxes for the amount I was quoted for 1 comparable Dell box.

Used this memory:
32 x ($64.99) Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G

And these CPUs
4 x ($299.99) Intel Xeon E5-2609 Sandy Bridge-EP 2.4GHz 10MB L3 Cache LGA 2011 80W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80621E52609
