1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Cheap, Barebones server, BMC

Cons: I have 23 of these online. Three of them (one recently) had a complete RAID corruption happen without warning. I have setup RAID10 on the LSI onboard and also RAID5 with a hotspare and seen both configurations completely fail. That is NOT what RAID is for and neither should have happened. If you want to spin the wheel and hope you don't have to recover using a backup, get the ASUS TSx00 series. If you want to avoid getting THAT call, go with another manufactures server

Other Thoughts: They are great, until.......

2 out of 5 eggsScary

Pros: Bundle

Cons: Scary - wouldn't restart after reboot last night. Removed from service-plugged in an 8pin power cable to mobo and will not start...I am afraid mobo is failing and very scared bcuz of production status of machine..

Other Thoughts: Slow to update with windows 2012 r2 drivers....

2 out of 5 eggsSwing and a miss.

Pros: Cheap, probably ok for pure "server" use

Cons: There are a bunch of issues that I have with this setup, particularly if it's being used as a workstation (the motherboard, the Z9PA-D8, is indicated for dual server/workstation focus).

For one, the power supply is not up to snuff- 500w in a dual CPU workstation is cutting it close in this day and age. With 2x 130W CPUs, it cannot handle a modest GPU like the Asus 650ti I paired it with. Users will also note the consumer-grade PSU, with only one EPS12v header (going to a motherboard that requires 2 with higher-wattage CPUs).

The Z9PA-D8 is a standard ATX motherboard, but this case is way too huge- I have it right next to the competing Supermicro 7037-A-I, which uses an EATX motherboard, and the Supermicro manages to be both shorter in height and depth. Also, the case doesn't seem to have any practical way to mount a 2.5" SSD, due to the 4x 3.5" backplane. Tolerances seem pretty poor all around, as even with ASUS's own 650ti video card and MIO audio card, the connectors align very poorly to the rear I/O shield of the case (I can barely use my speaker & mic jacks, for example). Also, while the locking front panel is great for server use, it doesn't appear to be easily removable, and the mesh blocks the front USB/audio jacks in addition to the power/reset switches. You can remove the mesh, but it will look nasty.

System builders beware- ASUS's implementation of chassis intrusion detection will require you to do a CMOS reset every time the case is opened (seriously). Just jump out the chassis intrusion header on the motherboard and be done with it.

Finally, cooling- one of the main complaints with the Supermicro 7037-A-I is that Supermicro has stopped including heatsink/fan combos. The ASUS TS700 costs $200 less and includes HSF's, but on my 130w CPUs, temperatures are remarkably poor (yes, I know how to install a heatsink/fan properly).

Other Thoughts: It's cheap, but considering that you need to spend another $100 or so to get decent cooling and power- just get the Supermicro.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I am sorry that you were having issues with the server. Since you posted this review, has everything been resolved in this case? If not, please contact me through email, and we can discuss this case further. Please note that this model does not support 130w CPUs in a dual setup; if you were going to use this configuration, you would need to install two 115w processors. Below, I have added the link to our support site which shows what processors are compatible with this server. If you wanted a model that supports two 130w processors, please see our ESC4000. Should you need any assistance, please let me know. 3432747.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother ASUS Success

Pros: This server rocks and is amazingly affordable. Everything in the box was assembled and ready to go (mobo, power supply, DVD drive, etc). I installed 2 CPUs, 4 HDs and 64GB RAM, and had this system up and running in less than an hour.

Onboard ROMs provide two different raid utilities which are easy to configure. This thing is super-simple to set up and rocks just like every other ASUS system I've owned.

Cons: I wish it came with the Pike RAID card second HD bay (it comes with 1 bay to hot-swap up to 4 drives, and supports a second bay). These will be additional expenses in the future.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely buy another one and recommend this box.

1 out of 5 eggsSupport is Horrible

Pros: Looked promising

Cons: Arrived DOA--installed RAM and CPU. Nothing. Contacted support and in addition to taking about 3 to 5 minutes between each chat they were very unhelpful in trying to get me a replacement--seemed OK with me returning it to newegg as a DOA

Other Thoughts: Can save you money building your own but don't expect much from support
