5 out of 5 eggsGreat for storage

Pros: Great enclosure. Had several Seagate external USB drives on my Windows Home Server setup. Took the hard drives out and plugged them into this little unit and they're cursing at a much faster eSATA speed. WHS had no problem recognizing all 4 drives after installing card and driver disc. And to my relief, WHS had no problems detecting my storage pool drives after moving them from their old USB enclosures to this eSATA enclosure.

Great build quality, sturdy and simple. Will definitely buy a few more!

Cons: Card is PCIe.. My home server is built from spare parts, and a motherboard with no PCIe slots. Picked up the Habey PCI 4x Port Multiplier here on Newegg and it worked just fine.

Other Thoughts: Will be picking a couple more of these up as my server storage shrinks and future paychecks come in *lol*

4 out of 5 eggsNice BOX

Pros: sturdy construction
drives fit good
long eSATA cable ~5'
easy install
decent speed

Cons: missing a few thumb screws
drives only fasten with 2 screws
power socket wiggly
eSATA cable is a bit stiff
power cable stiff
on/off switch on back :(
loud fan with unnecessary blue led

Other Thoughts: using Vista Ult 64 and the install was brainless. as i was reading the instructions the thing installed itself :)

not sure why the drives only use 2 screws? the holes are there for two more but they are just a bit off. if the standoffs that hold the PCB were a bit longer the screw holes would line up. manufacture obviously is aware of this because they do not even include screws for the holes that do not line up.

used a bit of ca glue on the power socket and stopped the wiggle :)

power cable being stiff is normal, now days, but i figured the eSATA cable would not be this stiff. a normal SATA cable feels like wet noodle compared to this.

i used the ATTO benchmark tool and tested the drives before and after. the only drive that had a lower benchmark was the WD Black 1TB. it went from 118.5/119.5 to 108/124 (write/read MB/Sec) not much change

they could have used a larger quiet fan

4 out of 5 eggsOSX Update

Pros: See below

Cons: See Below

Other Thoughts: I already wrote a review so I'm not going to add much more, just wanted to point out that, for all the negative reviews regarding the PCIe card support in OSX, the current SIL3132 drivers do work with this card in 10.6, I have a pair of these running under 10.6.4.

5 out of 5 eggsI loved it!

Pros: VERY easy to get HDD's installed and running for my media center PC. I have two 2TB HDD's and a one 1TB HDD installed. Works beautifully.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: I'd already recommended this product to numerous friends with media centers. :)

5 out of 5 eggsEasy use box for home storage

Pros: Easy to install and use for normal storage
come with a ESATA card supports port multiplier, the ESATA from my MB doesn't support, and this saves me.
Transfer speed is a little low, but not bad for home use.
I can put different size of hard drivers in.

Cons: No hot swap tray to allow you to hot swap the hard drive, though I don't use this a lot. But it will be better if it has.
Fan is a little noisy, but not very bad.

5 out of 5 eggsGood external case

Pros: Works as it should and great price.

Cons: The included non-locking eSata cable has caused some issues. I was having trouble seeing the drives even though I could see the case was hooked up when using the included software. The case and "host" power lights were lit up but the drive light was not. Plugged everything back in and powered back on and it works fine. Be careful though, as I have already bumped the cable loose just by moving things around on my desk.

Other Thoughts: I am using this simply as external drive storage. I currently have a single 2TB WD20EARS drive in it and it is working just fine. I don't plan to use RAID and once this fills up I will build a dedicated file server.

4 out of 5 eggsMSS match

Pros: Turnkey out of the box
Hey, they even included an ESATA cable.

Cons: Hotswappable means "don't screw the drives in" so it's either a more or less moveable machine that you can't hotswap drives out of or it's a hotswap box that you can't move.

Other Thoughts: Strictly used as a JBOD married to an HP MSS 475 via the HP's onboard ESATA port. Works the bawls. Literally plug and play. No software tweaks, no finessing hardware. I popped in a couple of WD 2TB green drives and a couple of 1TB drives, a WD and a Seagate. Turned on the TR4M, let it wind up for a minute or so and hit the on switch to the HP. No reference to the manual or using the provided RAID card. Just stuff the drives, flip the switch and fuggedaboudit. That was about a month ago and I haven't shut it down since.
Short money, one power cable (no brick) and one ESATA cable and BAM... double the capacity. I'm a happy guy.

3 out of 5 eggsbasic but usable

Pros: price (slightly over 1 Bennie) would not be happy to pay any more. Performance is adequate

Cons: none really, it does work

Other Thoughts: this model only 4 TB max capacity. Would really like a power button on front of unit. Would not bother with RAID5. This is a part time power on for me, use it to backup from WHS.
Even with only 2 green drives temp is reported at 32C.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The unit is now support latest 2TB hard drives. You may see the specification listed as 1TB but it is confirmed and tested with 2TB hard drives.

If you have problem with the unit, please contact tech@sansdigital.com or 1.800.980.1988 for the problem. We will be able to help you with your current issues and provide service to you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case for the price

Pros: Cheap price, well made!
Fully supported under Ubuntu Linux.
Comes with cable and card.
Cooling is good.
Fan is silent.

Cons: Non Locking ESATA Cable, and cable is a bit stiff.
Blue Lights on the fan (Why?) (Can be cut as they are exposed)
Have to remove cover to remove drives. Not a big deal!

Other Thoughts: For those of you that say you can not remove the drives. Just loosen the thumb screws holding the drive in, and use them to slide the drive forward.
I am using this with a MythTV setup and 1TB WD black drives.
Wish I would have purchased 2 when they were on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsRunning this for mac

Pros: Cheap external storage solution, solid build. Comes with e-sata cable. It was only an inch or two short, and I've yet to find one longer.

Cons: 1. Not ideal for hot-swapping, the only way I can get drives out is by taking the top one out then working my way down 1 by 1.
2. Had trouble setting this up at first, can't use their card or the esata plugs inside the tower. Use a sonnet card (must be in one of the top 2 PCI card slots from my experience).

Other Thoughts: Didn't want to pay extra for black so I spray painted it myself and it turned out amazing after I had my art friend do finishing touches on it.

Replaced the fan with a tornado, it was wayyyyy too loud (ringing in ears) so I put the stock back in for now.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

If you need higher performance, consider using upgraded 4 eSATA PCIe x4 controller card from below link. It will provide over ~200MB/s in RAID 5. Also, it can allow more than 5 drives into a single RAID volume/drive letter.

Thanks,
