The MobileSTOR MS2UTN+B series is a fully loaded 2-bay external RAID solution designed for home and small business storage needs. With simplicity and flexibly in mind, this series is equipped with two hot-swappable 3.5” hard drive trays, as well as both USB 2.0 and eSATA host interfaces. In addition to RAID 0 and RAID 1, MS2UTN+B also utilizes the latest Silicon Image 5744 chipset, supporting the newest SAFE33 and SAFE50 technology. SAFE33 and SAFE50 allows the creation of two hard drive volumes where 1/3 (SAFE33) or 1/2 (SAFE50) of the volume is used for mirroring and the rest is used for Spanning (Big). In comparison to SAFE (RAID 1) mode, which utilizes both hard drives for mirroring, SAFE33 and SAFE50 increase storage space by setting aside a portion of disk space for regular data storage while performing mirror simultaneously. By incorporating SAFE33 and SAFE50, the MS2UTN+B eliminates the cost of additional hard drives needed for various storage modes.

  • newegg Data Protection The SANS DIGITAL MobileSTOR supports multiple RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, spanning, JBOD, SAFE33, and SAFE50 to ensure maximum performance and data security. SAFE 33 / SAFE50 creates two hard drive volumes where 1/3 or 1/2 of the hard drive volume is used for mirroring and the rest is used for spanning (Big).
  • newegg 2 Hot-swappable 3.5" SATA Drive Bays The SANS DIGITAL MobileSTOR features two 3.5" SATA drive bays supporting both SATA I and SATA II hard drive for spacious storage space. All drive bays are hot-swappable and removable for easy installation and replacement without the need to shut down the whole system.
  • newegg Temperature controlled Cooling Fan The SANS DIGITAL MobileSTOR comes with a temperature controlled fan for effective heat-dissipation and quieter operations, helping to unlock the potential of this Raid enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Unit.

Pros: All that it claims it will do.

Cons: The exhaust fan does not not spin EVER. Causes unit to overheat and disconnect from system. I have not even had it for a full moth!!! Purchased 21MAR12 (arrived 29MAR12).

Other Thoughts: The exhaust fan failed after about ONE week of use. Unit became hot and failed to be recognized by windows. Glad I didnt lose any of the data that was backed up to the unit before it FAILED. Not even worth returning due to how long it took for it to arrive at my APO address. Be warned as I know I am not the only one that had this same issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The cooling fan is temperature controlled and will not spin until it needs. However, if it does not spin at all, it could be a defective cooling fan.

If you experience with the cooling fan issues, please contact our technical support at tech@sansdigital.com or 1-800-980-1988 for further support. We can help to identity the issues and provide you the solutions.

1 out of 5 eggsSuper slow, unreliable, freezes my computer

Pros: Unit is well built.

Cons: - Unit is extremely slow (with eSATA connection)
- Unit is unreliable (I get read timeouts/erros)
- Unit is crashing my computer

Other Thoughts: I never even got to try the RAID mode. The JBOD mode already is unusable. Maybe USB2.0 works better, but I'm not really in the mood to try it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

MS2UTN+B's JBOD mode required eSATA PM support. If you are directly connected to the eSATA port of the computer, or connect to eSATA to SATA bracket, it may not supported and causing errors. Onboard eSATA or bracket approach requires motherboard supports on PM as well as hot-swap, which in Windows environment, ofter causing freeze, or lock up. The issues can be resolved by adding a eSATA PCIe based controller.

Please contact our technical support at tech@sansdigital.com or 1-800-980-1988 for further support. We will be able to help you for this issues.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent RAID...eventually

Pros: The RAID works as intended, and works quickly for what my office uses it for. There are no problems with the device at this time.

Cons: We had to RMA our unit to get the power supply repaired. The RAID was slow to build initially.

Other Thoughts: The RMA process was extremely fast and easy. Tech support was easy to contact.

3 out of 5 eggsSMART monitoring fails under Linux

Pros: Inexpensive enclosure that works well for RAID 1 redundant storage.

eSATA interface allows for higher transfer speeds than USB 2.0

Cons: The actual SMART data of the drives is masked from the host, while the enclosure provides non-standard SMART data (unknown attributes) with "failing" values.

This causes Linux to flag the drive as "being used outside design parameters" even though there is no problem. The only way to stop this is to disable SMART monitoring of the RAID.

As a result, no software monitoring is possible, and you have to rely solely on the "Alert" LED on the enclosure to know if anything is wrong.

Worse yet, it isn't clear from the poor documentation if this LED indicates only RAID errors or if it will also alert for drive SMART errors.

Additionally, attempts to use this enclosure for RAID 0's performance boost fail. Instead of almost doubling throughput, it ends up a bit less than the performance of one drive alone.

Add to this fan that is loud even in its low speed. So you aren't likely to have this sitting on your desk, making it unlikely that you'll see the "Alert" LED if it does illu

Other Thoughts: Despite all of the shortcomings of this enclosure, this enclosure is one of the less expensive ways to set up redundant storage.

However, if you can afford the extra cost, I would recommend looking into a "smart" NAS enclosure instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

This products under RAID 0 reach over 100MB/s. The unit provide on monitoring software via Windows and MAC, but unfortunately, not on Linux. SMART information is handled by the unit and and it will flag failure as RAID error. NAS enclosure, on the other hand, provide different usage (Network Share vs local share) and it only performance varies by the models, from 10MB/s ~ 100MB/s by limit of the Gigabit Ethernet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product for the price

Pros: Sturdy metal construction
Easy removal of drives
eSATA
A fan for active cooling
Multiple RAID configurations

Cons: The documentation could be improved to help people that are new to RAID boxes. The documentation provided is sufficient for people with reasonable technical knowledge.

Other Thoughts: The box the product was shipped in was not damaged. However the box that the product was shipped in was crumpled on one corner. I was fortunate that the product worked just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Solidly built, compact, versatile, easy to use, GREAT customer service, affordable.

Cons: Could use better & more extensive DOCUMENTATION for newbies as there are more than a few things you could do wrong when setting up. This would probably help the rating of these products too.

Other Thoughts: I am so pleased with this little box, I had to take the time to add my review. As someone else has mentioned, this (and many other) RAID box gets a bum rap, mostly due to inexperienced users who blame their mistakes on the product.

Everything installed wonderfully right out of the box, a 2TB mirror using Hitachi (5K3000s) built within just a few hours, transfer speeds via eSATA are around 60MB/sec which is very respectable with these discs (video editing has been a breeze).

I contacted tech support, because the key-pins and screws were missing from the box (no biggie), I got someone on the line right away, and he immediately offered to ship those to me. I'm impressed.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked good, when it worked

Pros: For the price, this has a lot of features - multiple RAID options, active cooling, eSATA.

Quality of external materials was good, this thing never got very hot.

Cons: Quality of the circuitry/hardware not so good, failed after about 18 months.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The unit comes with 1 year parts and labor warranty. If the unit is out of warranty, Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at tech@sansdigital.com for out of warranty repair options.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product!

Pros: Seems to be made of good quality materials (not all plastic like some others). Came with ESATA cables! The item came in some sort of bracket to protect it during shipping which was a great idea as not to bend it if shipping was rough.

I have had the item going on a few weeks now, and everything is great so far.

Cons: Fairly Loud - If in a quiet room, this thing is fairly loud. But my PC is a lot louder that sits above this thing, so I don't care either way.

Slow Raid Build - Building 2 x 2TB drives in Raid 1 took nearly an entire day. But once it was done these things are quick and I am very happy with the Transfer speeds over ESATA

-1 EGG - Poor Documentation - Its sad when a company invests in research and development of a great product, but hire someone not fluent in English to write the manual for the product. Manual is in Poor English and very lacking on instructions and descriptions of the product.

Other Thoughts: The Raid dial was set to 0 on mine when I received. I was able to see the very tiny arrow on the actual gray dial you turn and set this to RAID 1 (Mirror) . It was very very small arrow but it was there none the less. Not sure if I got a newer version then others but I did have one.

Seems to not have any issues with the 2 drives i purchased along side of this thing (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145473) HITACHI Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 (0f12115) 2TB

1 out of 5 eggsCould be a good product

Pros: Easy drive installation

Cons: Poor tech support and slower repair or replacement. Unit failed to recognize any drive in bay one. Took four days for any reply from tech support then took a week to get rma number. Still waiting for repaired unit to be sent.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products. E-mail response time is within one business day but some of the e-mail got filtered in customer or our e-mail system. Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or submit the problem via our online forum/technical form if no e-mail is responded.
