solid product
- Pros: holds eight drives and does what it's designed to do.
- Cons: I would probably prefer two fans vs. the one large one, but I can't really call that a con.
- Other Thoughts: Someone mentioned that the drive bays didn't have locking mechanisms, but mine do and they work as expected
Great enclosure
- Pros: I'm not using the included raid controller, but it's working great with an HPT rocketraid 622. Included hardware
- Cons: obnoxious fan with blue led
- Other Thoughts: replaced the fan with a Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm.
It would be nice if they numbered the ports on the case to match the LEDS.
Follow-up to prior review
- Pros: Holds 8 hard drives. As I'm using it with a Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.x, it only seems to support software RAID - thus, RAID 0 or 1. It also supports each drive showing individually, if you'd like to do that. I'm currently using it with a Sonnet Tempo E4P, and it works wonderfully. I bought a second, so I can mirror all of the drives in my other TR8M. The newer one shipped with a quieter fan.
- Cons: The bright LEDs. I ended up taking it apart and snipping the wires connecting the LEDs - it wasn't difficult. I noticed another reviewer mentioned replacing the fans with quieter ones, and I think I'm going to look into that.
The PCI card that the TR8M ships with doesn't support newer versions of Mac OS X, but I'm grateful that they included a PCI card anyway.
I was excited to use other RAID configurations, but was disappointed when I found those are only supported on Windows (please correct me if I'm wrong - some parity would be welcome).
- Other Thoughts: I submitted a review a few months ago, when I was using a Power Mac G5 and a Sonnet Tempo X4P - still very happy.
Other reviews reminded me: occasionally, drives don't appear. Power off the enclosure, make sure cables are secure, and power on again. Once I get it working, I avoid touching the cables, if possible.
