1 out of 5 eggsTotal Device Failure

Pros: Looks good. Worked well when it worked.

Cons: This device has a fatal flaw. I believe it's a power supply issue. The every time my computer tries to access a drive in the external tower it will shut itself down and freeze my computer.

Other Thoughts: This is a very frustrating problem. This enclosure spontaneously stopped working and now I am unable to access any data on any drives in the tower.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

The problem on this review does not provide too many information for the issues. It could be power supply as the customer suggested, it also could be the issues from the controller, hard drives and others.

If you are having problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for e-mail supports.

Thank you.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works great with five 1 terabyte drives.

Cons: Shipping

Other Thoughts: Recieved unit was slightly bent and hard to get cover put on correctly. Also 1 green drive leds knocked back into unit. Newegg usally double boxes and nothing is damaged. Not in this case. But needed to use right away so did not what to return for exchange.

4 out of 5 eggseasy storage

Pros: drive to drive sustained write to wd 2tb 5900rpm 64mb cache (65mbs cache) using viseversa pro for software mirroring. the supplied controler is easy to configure for mulit drive setup (needed if your not gonna use onboard controller) hot swap works like a champ. atleast its easer to keep all my drives together.

Cons: Bought this to hook to my lenovo y550p esata. the intel control only will reconize 1 drive at a time. renders drive to drive useless with out a desktop.

Other Thoughts: I am a traveling Comms Tech, I have over 2 tb of data. I do alot of disk copying and drvie to drive tranfers so this was useless for what i wanted it for, but it will get used at the hotel, i just have to keep another 2tb drive with me. this is not just an archiving soulution.

4 out of 5 eggsVery noisy

Pros: Clean look, easy to mount drives, works with supplied card.

Cons: The fan that cools the power supply is a tornado ... high pitched whine that I can hear across my house. The fan that cools the drives is all but silent. Could not make it work with Zotac GeForce 9300 ITX eSATA port on WHS. Tried AHCI, IDE, RAID, you name it. Drives installed and up to date, no dice. The ONLY way I got this to work with WHS was to install the supplied Sil 3132, 2-port card. Too bad I wanted to keep my one PCI-E slot for something else.

Other Thoughts: They really should have made the power supply fan quiet or simply used the drive cooling fan to cool the power supply as well.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth the price I paid.

Pros: Works as advertised. Very quick to set up and install on my Windows 7 system. Disc mech installation is quick and easy. The 5 drive LEDs at the bottom, as others have noted, is a good feature.

I bought this on sale which made it WELL worth the price.

Cons: As others have mentioned, the eSATA cable is stiff and somewhat prone to disconnecting itself, but I've found that to be mitigated by careful placing of the unit (and avoiding letting playful kittens in the room).

Also RAID5 is so painfully slow that it should not even be considered with the provided PCIe 1x card.

Other Thoughts: I wish I'd read the review about RAID5 performance before I wasted time trying it. I set up a RAID5 with 4 500GB Seagate drives for 1.5 TB, but write performance was so bad that I blew that away and went to RAID 10 with same drives for 1.0 TB total space (I was after redundancy and can afford the space). On RAID5, the copy of ~250GB would have taken almost all day. On RAID10 it was done in less than 2 hours which easily met my needs.

The manufacturer states that replacing the PCIe1x card provided with an upgraded 4x card would vastly improve the RAID5 performance, but I confess I'm skeptical and not willing to invest in that just now. Hopefully someone will and post a review.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

For RAID performance on the difference controller card, please follow the below link for the comparison.

4 out of 5 eggsWork Good for Me

Pros: Has worked with no issues.

Cons: Could be quieter. Cables come out easily from back, esp. the esata.

Other Thoughts: I hadn't used the RAID. Should come with 2 more empty hard drive trays.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's quick to connect, for the most part everything just works.
Case feels solid.

Cons: The cable is junk, the end seems to have broken off in the connector now i'm hoping i can get it the unit replaced if you touch or move the cable at all the drives disconnect.
Drive bays are plastic

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased.

Pros: Installed to a refurbished Dell 3.2 GHz GX280 using the PCIe 1x card (came with it) in a JBOD config.

This box runs a home email/web/file server under CentOS 5.4. Install was completely painless with CentOS recognizing everything without a burp.

Case is more solid than I expected and drive insertion/removal is a snap.

As another reviewer pointed out there are now 5 lights in the lower left corner (if your are facing unit), just a bit more convenient to see.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsTrouble

Pros: Cheap. When works, it's OK.

Cons: The esata cable is nothing but trouble. The card supplied is junk. I have bought the 4-port card, but because of the cable issues the system routinely loses raid members. When I was rebuilding, I made a temp copy to a pass-through disk, and *ouch* -- the system lost it, together with all the data. And the software for management the arrays is garbage. If you lost one member, most likely you'll have to rebuild ALL arrays. But hey, it's cheap!
