1 out of 5 eggsPointless

Pros: Pointless.

Cons: Setup RAID1 in a server. Ran perfectly for a long time with 2 identical WDC black drives. Shortly before this unit reached a year of continuous use, a drive failed. The unit would not continue to operate on a single drive. I waited for western digital to send me a replacement drive, put it in and now the unit refuses to rebuild the mirror. The unit is now one week out of warranty. So basically, the unit doesn't even work as advertised.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The IR12TB is hardware RAID enclosure and it will be rebuilding automatically. Since there is no display or utility, the rebuild can only be tell by the LED, as purple is the source and red/purple flashing as the target. If it does not rebuild, Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail at if further support.

5 out of 5 eggsFine for Server Use

Pros: Easy setup. Reliable performance.

Cons: price - but it's not really a con considering the performance.

Other Thoughts: We're using this enclosure with two WD Scorpio Drives in a Hyper-V/Backup Server scenario, where the performance demands aren't too high. Haven't had a problem at all - even after total power failure.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure for Home/Small biz users.

Pros: I have this is a Win 7 Ultimate workstation that runs 24/7 and only restarts - it never shuts down. Windows 7 installed with no drivers after seeing the Raid1 array as a single drive. Disk Management classifies the device as a RAID 1 array, so Win 7 will report issues on the drive, if it came to that. No crashes, performance issues, etc.

Cons: Wish it locked a little better, but not going to complain too much.

Other Thoughts: For home and small business users wanting a little extra protection, this is perfectly fine. I actually have it mounted inside the case instead of in a externally facing bay. Keeps things simple so no buttons get pushed accidentally.

I would not use this in a server since it doesn't lock and since I don't think the specs are enough to allow for proper bandwidth compared to other solutions. I would NEVER think about using this in a database environment - any actual DB admin is probably looking at that reviewer shaking their head.

Anyone wanting this for speed needs to look elsewhere. This is a single SATA-cable device, it's not specially connected to the BUS or anything else. The internal hardware and single-cable latency is NOT going to give you BUS level performance. You're going to get better performance with multiple drives connected to a motherboard using built-in RAID from the MB manufacturer. C'mon people - get with it.

4 out of 5 eggsPeace of mind

Pros: Gives you protection where you normally wouldn't have it. In my case, a 1U server with only 1 3.5" drive bay.

Cons: None so far, but I haven't slammed it.

Other Thoughts: The initial build of the mirrored drive didn't seem to impact performance as I was loading the o/s and some virtual machines/large files, so I suspect that other reviewer may have had a bad unit or bad drive. In my use case, I'm not slamming the drives with i/o's (like SQL). I've transferred some very large files off USB (isos for example) and didn't notice anything weird.
It would be nice if there was a way to run a remote LED. Mine is fully encased inside a server so I had to drill a hole to be able to see the LED's to know if there is a drive failure. Alternatively, some sort of management software or even simply an audio indicator.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't use in a server

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: This enclosure was running the hard drives in a RAID-1 setup for a low end MSSQL server. Performance is fine while the mirror is working, but as soon as this thing needs to do any serious mirroring it would cause the system to freeze up for minutes at a time. In an environment where other workstations are constantly accessing the MSSQL server for information system freezes for multiple seconds isn't a good thing, let alone minutes.

Other Thoughts: If you are going to use this for a home PC situation it would probably work fine for you. However, if you are using this in a server environment where hard drive performance is critical, I wouldn't bother with this enclosure. As they say, you get what you pay for and you're better off looking elsewhere. We took a chance on these and unfortunately they just couldn't stand up to the challenge.

Manufacturer Response:

The unit is tested for 24/7 application and the performance is about 70MB/s for RAID 1.

Please contact or call 1.800.980.1988 if you have problem with the unit.

4 out of 5 eggsIR12TB internal RAID

Pros: Easy convertability from 2.5" to 3.5" drives. Converts 2 drives into either RAID 0 or RAID 1. Great for a quick solution.

Cons: I have two Solidata X2 64 GB SSDs. There normal Read is around 180-220 Mb/s. Through this controller my system bottlenecked to around 150 Mb/s in RAID 0. Might be the shear output of the drives or a Hardware controller.

Other Thoughts: Still as a quick solution this drive is handy for those not wishing to purchase RAID controllers or use onboard raid to configure there drives.
