Pros: This is a follow-up on a review done previously - pros and cons are the same as before.
Cons: This is a follow-up on a review done previously - pros and cons are the same as before.
Other Thoughts: Note that RAID-6 can be done on this box even with the controller only handling up to RAID-5 using software RAID (with mdadm in linux). Hence, the controller actually handles it as JBOD. The eSATA link supports data transfer rates that far surpass the sustained rates of the individual drives so there is relatively little performance loss with software RAID. Also, RAID-6 gives extra redundancy over RAID-5. In linux, the software RAID status is easy to monitor via the file: /proc/mdstat which is sometimes tough to monitor post-boot with hardware RAID controllers.

NOT PORT MULTIPLIED

Pros: Very pretty. Bought from Newegg so I didn’t have to do a chargeback.
Cons: Where to start? The controller drivers are not compatible with Intel NICs under Vista.
The RAID software will only work with an ancient version of JAVA, you can not install any other new version and have it work. Like if you use HP SM or Azureus which requires the latest JAVA you have to choose the utility or the box.
The so call port multiplier is not a port multiplier but a soft multiplier so PORT multiplier aware hardware RAID cards like LSI, HP P series, Areca, and 3 Ware can not work.
No mater how you set the raid you can not exceed a sustained read or write rate of 20MiBS under windows XP, XP64, Vista, or Vista 64. If I wanted such sub par performance I would have bought a USB device.
Power supply is not 220W as listed in the spec. with 4 7W Hitachi’s the unit stayed powered up. After installing 5 22W Gen 2 Raptor 150s (to test if the unbelievably bad performance was the cause of the hard drive) the system ran for a full 5 seconds before the power supply blew.
Other Thoughts: The below reviewer stated he has a RAID SIX on this thing. I wish I knew how. The controller only supports 0,1,10,5. When I tested the device transferring data between a single non raided drive in the box and the internal Intel raid you got reasonable speed for the individual drives. If you accessed more then one drive at a time the global throughput was reduces to 20MiBps. For example access 1 1TB drive was around 108MiBps (the limit of the Hitachi’s), access two drives it dropped to 10Mibps per drive, access 3 dropped to ~6.7MiBps per drive. Never got to test how it worked with Raptors.
NewEgg if you read this please update your description to SOFT multiplier as that is what the chipset in this thing is...
Manufacturer Response:The controller driver does not interference with NIC driver and it will work with JAVA version up to 6.
The TR5M unit support industry standard Port Multiplier product. LSI, HP P series, Areca, and 3Ware are not support port multiplier so it will not work. Please check back with our technical support for supported controller card.
With bundled PCIe 1x controller, RAID 5 is ~40MB/s and RAID 0 is ~120MB/s. The performance is limited to the PCIe 1x slot and upgrade PCIe 4x is available. Upgraded controller can reach ~200MB/s for RAID 5 performance.
Power supply is 220W power supply and support Raptor drives. Please contact tech@sansdigital.com if you have any further issues.

Excellent Box!

Pros: With linux (fc10), plug it in, turn it on and it works just fine. Transfer rates with raid 6 are better than 4GB/min using the included eSATA card and 5, 750GB drives. Trays appear to be lightweight but manufactured fine and fit well into case. No mechanical or interfacing issues at all except that it does appear to require a silicon image chipset on the eSATA interface which is what is on the included PCIe card. Good airflow and relatively quiet. Drive temperatures in box are 36-38C while sitting in our office which is cooler than any of the PC drives.
Cons: Would be nice if they included some additional drive mounting screws as there are exactly 20 (don't drop any!) Handle for the case would also be nice.
Other Thoughts: Much less expensive and higher throughput than a NAS box over gigabit ethernet in our experience.

Accesses five hard drives using only one cable. Support PC, MAC and Linux. (Please note that the host adapter card is based on Silicon Image chipset, which currently only support up to MAC OS 10.5.1 by Silicon Image.)
