1 out of 5 eggsProduct OK, SansDigital support not great.

Pros: Easy windows file sharing. Put your own drives in it. Good bang-for-the-buck.

Cons: Manufacturer (SansDigital) never released any firmware updates that fixed any of the issues I reported to their support personnel - even 1 year later. FTPS with FileZilla - yeah, good luck with that. Oh, don't use an apostrophe in a user's description or you will lock yourself out of the whole thing.

FileZilla Issue:

Other Thoughts: Don't buy one new. Don't buy one used, unless you know what you are getting into.

Build your own instead running OpenSource distribution such as "FreeNAS".

1 out of 5 eggsMeh....

Pros: inexpensive, small

Cons: false alarms sound at random times, file permissions change randomly, owner's manual is a joke!

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time. Poor piece of equipment. Would only suggest to someone I had a grudge against.

4 out of 5 eggsGood basic Windows file server replacement, for HOME.

Pros: Pro's:
-----
Windows File Sharing, so it's very easy to connect to - from any Windows machine.
Built-in RAID-1. However, not sure if it's hardware or software implemented. Based on details in the web-interface it appears as if it might be using a Linux-based software RAID.
FTPS (FTP over SSL) access. Haven't tried it yet, but appears to be "explicit" FTPS or "FTPES").
Also has NFS access, but haven't tried that yet.

Cons: Con's:
----
Permissions-manangement only at "file share" level, not within the directory structure. Typical for most low-end NAS-type appliances - only true Windows-native file servers apparently can implemment that fully/correctly.
No WebDAV or web-based file access. The web interface is just for management - not file access.
No option to SSL-enable to web-interface, so assume your admin password is flying around un-encrypted.
No built-in BitTorrent (at least as of 2.44C version of the firmware anyway).
No direct SSH or serial access to built-in OS (apparently some Linux flavor).
A few bugs still being discovered and worked-out.
Not every error gets logged. Many times the device will "beep" like something is wrong, but nothing in the logs or LCD display. Not sure what to make of that.

Other Thoughts: Over-all:
--------

Over-all, I still like it. I'm keeping mine. I mostly bought it to be a replacement for leaving a full Windows PC up and runing 24x7 to act as a file server. I'd really like to have some kind of HTTPS-based way to upload and download files to it, and a built-in BitTorrent function would be nice. Of course, some bigs obviously still need to be fixed as well.

Things I hope they add or fix soon ...

Fix the user-management bug (which I already submitted to their technical support).
SSL-Enable the web-interface (i.e. make it HTTPS), to protect all authentication.
Add some kind of web-based (over HTTPS/SSL) interface for uploading and downloading files, that uses the same user accounts as with the Windows file sharing.
Add a built-in BitTorrent feature (offered in competing appliances).

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Nice for Home Use

Pros: -Supports 2 X 2 TB Hard Drives
-Very Easy to Configure. It took me 10 min to setup. Minus the Hard Drive Format time. I knew I wanted RAID 1 from the start, configured it as so and moved on.
-Small Foot Print
-Great for the Home Server or a Small Office - It was intended to be setup for Office I think, but I can make shares for each family member. Or make a Share for the whole drive.

I have 3 Computers, 1 XP, 1 X Vista and 2X Windows 7, all can access without problems from a linksys router.

-Built Like a Brick! Nice and Solid - You don't want to move a device like this when writing to anyway, so don't! This is not as cheap in price as other similar devices but it's not that flimsily plastic either.

Cons: Really can't think of any, but I have not had very long. Will update if I run into any problems.

Other Thoughts: It came with a CD, But I through it to the waist side, no need for it, it came with a little pamphlet to configure it.

Not Sure why people complain about the fan, it does not seem to loud to me. I have it sitting on a solid Oak Desk, I put it behind my monitor and forget about it. I could imagine if it was setting on something loose it would simply cause vibration noise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little NAS

Pros: -Nice metal case
-Small footprint
-Gigabit network connection
-Hotswappable drive bays
-Simple share creation and user rights setup
-Works flawlessly with Windows and Linux systems

Cons: Fan is somewhat loud

Other Thoughts: Fan seems to be variable speed but only slows down when no disk usage is present but even then it speeds right back up in seconds on it's own. It would be perfect if it would stay on low quiet speed until it detects usage.

3 out of 5 eggsSeems ok but...

Pros: Initial thoughts - Solidly build - very sturdy, has some nice weight to it, metal. All in all this device does what's needed. The front LCD panel is kinda cool, although somewhat useless. Its main screen is the IP address and what Raid Mode its in. No documentation really explains what any of the features on the LCD actually mean (Even the "Detailed Downloaded PDF manual") However, it was easy to setup - although took much longer than expected to configure the raid. 2 1TB WD Black Drives it took around 20 minutes to a half hour for the device to go through its paces of configuring and formatting. Also note as previous reviewer stated - Whenever you're changing the RAID setup it will set the unit back to factory default. IE: Setup your Raid FIRST - then configure lan settings ect.

Cons: I don't know if its a defect, but I am NOT getting gigabit speeds. I have tried multiple cables, (Cat5e & Cat6) as well as direct wire connection from PC to NAS via Cat6 - all speeds seem to top out @ 100mbit speeds. I've ruled out all possible network/pc related issues by transferring a 5GB file from one PC to another @ average Win 7 reported 60MB/sec. Same file to this device - 6MB/sec. I have reached out to the manufacturer to see what they think on this, maybe there is a setting I am missing. I have even attempted a firmware upgrade (Takes about 20-30 minutes). I've also had the alarm sound every so often (Why I don't know, all temps/fan speeds check out OK). So not sure why this is.

Other Thoughts: This has potential to be a good unit. I could be suffering from poor quality control, but who knows - well see what Sans Digital has to say. However, for roughly the same price - the D-Link DNS-323 seems to be a better choice. There is even the cheaper D-Link DNS-321 that seems to be almost the exact same unit.

4 out of 5 eggsAffordable RAID1 NAS

Pros: Seems solidly built. Sturdy & quiet. Fast server for resident data in a Windows LAN environment.

Cons: My only gripe is that it cannot perform a non-destructive upgrade to RAID from a single basic disk. However, RAID1 array rebuild with a replacement disk is non-destructive.

Other Thoughts: There are more expensive NAS devices with additional bells & whistles, but this is an ideal entry-level unit.
