3 out of 5 eggsRackmountable - Sort of.

Pros: Comes with eSATA cables. Quieter than expected. Solid, well packed.

Cons: Difficult to put in rack. Bolts on side stick out so you can't slide it into a rack. You have to tip and wiggle it quite a bit. The holes are too close to the handles - the heads of the bolts end up ripping the handles. You need to use A LOT of force to get the screws in and tight.
Unit is very heavy for it's size. The power supply is 90% of the weight. Not sure why it has to be so heavy.

Other Thoughts: The power light is very bright as others have commented.
Documentation is minimal, but its pretty simple to hook up.
Fix the mounting system, and I'd buy another one. As it sits now, it's essentially 'damaged' in order to get it mounted, so will keep it rather than trying to RMA it. Will look for something different.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: The company seem to be "the real thing" - no cutting corners on materials - solid component and it even includes 4 esata cables. 10W power consumption (without any drives attached).

Cons: Too expensive for what it is - after all it's just a drive enclosure. Very expensive replacement trays (50 bucks a piece!). Full of technical quirks (see below). VERY HEAVY for just an enclosure. Very loud and as mentioned somewhere else, the blue status light is blinding.

Other Thoughts: The piece is built very solid but....
There are no 2.5 inch converter brackets for this enclosure. Big issue if you planned on using SSD's. Because of how the trays are mounted, using aftermarket conversion brackets is not a solution.
There is no way to control which fans are on or off (a simple dip switch on the back would be nice).
The cost of spare drive brackets is very high (50 bucks a pop).
The piece is VERY heavy for no apparent reason other than the solid steel used in construction. Does it really have to be this solid?

Overall, I believe this enclosure is way overpriced for what it offers. Very short-sighted engineering not allowing usage of 2.5 inch drives and not allowing fan control.

If I was to do this again, I'd buy cheapo 1U server enclosures and make my own storage enclosure out of them instead of spending over 300 bucks on this thing again.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

We design a bracket to fit 2.5" SSD or SATA drives. We also provide same solutions in 1U 8 bay 2.5" rackmount for SSD needs.

The fans are no active control, but monitor via a LED and alarm.

If you are having problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at for e-mail supports.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This comes with four eSATA cables about 3ft in length. That wasn't shown on the photo so I bought some and have extra now. Oh joy.

The power supply connector felt a bit cheap when I plugged it in.

The "Hard Drive Keys" are kind of a joke. If they were meant to prevent accidental hard drive ejection, they serve that purpose. But they are not security keys. They're just a flat piece of metal. A flat-head screwdriver could unlock them.

The power LED light on this thing is crazy bright! I know that's a weird thing to mention but when the lights are off in the server closet it casts shadows and you can't look directly into it. Weird.
