The TowerRAID TR4UT-B is a hardware RAID 4 bay enclosure that uses the USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MB/s performance. Built-in support for RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare support and JBOD, TR4UT-B provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failure. New RAID mode, CLONE mode or N-Way Mirror, are introduced to support the same copy of the data in all of the hard drives installed.

The hardware RAID enclosure also eliminates OS compatibility issues, since no software is required. In order to satisfy the need for performance hungry applications, each unit is bundled with PCIe 2.0 x1 two ports eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0 Gbps (6G) support (Highpoint Tech R622 Controller card). PCIe 2.0 provides twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0 unit, allowing over 200MB/s performance in PCIe 2.0 support slot.

Backward compatibility with PCIe 1.0 slots allow using the unit in any PCIe slot, to provide eSATA connectivity for the computer without eSATA build-in. Designed with easy installation in mind, the trayless TR4UT-B allows instant installation by simply inserting the hard drive after opening the protective ventilating cover. TR4UT-B is the ultimate eSATA RAID 5 storage for all of your storage need.

  • newegg Four-Bay Hardware RAID The TowerRAID TR4UT-B features four bays to support RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5, JBOD, clone and hot spare disk, providing over 200MB/s read and 170MB/s write performance. Hardware RAID eliminates OS compatibility issues and reduces the load of the server.
  • newegg Dual Interfaces The TowerRAID TR4UT-B features both eSATA and USB 2.0 interfaces to provide best transfer rate and best compatibility. eSATA controller card (Highpoint R622) with SATA 6Gbps support is also bundled.
  • newegg N-way Mirror Mode The TowerRAID TR4UT-B provides an N-Way Mirror mode to help you instantly copy data from one hard drive to several hard drives at the same time.
  • newegg Hard Disk Management The TowerRAID TR4UT-B automatically detects and rebuilds the insertion and removal of disks.

1 out of 5 eggsSystemic Power Supply Failures

Pros: Price, ease of setup

Cons: I have owned two of these units for two years - Within six months both had failed power sources. I had them both RMA-ed under the 1 year manufacturer's warranty. They then worked just fine for another year and have since both experienced failed power sources again (within a few months of each other). This is obviously a systemic issue.

Work fine other than this, but I was expecting some degree of longevity.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

If you continues to have power supply failure, please make sure the unit is connected to a surge protector.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Shipping Packaging

Pros: Nothing

Cons: I received this item today and saw that Newegg didn't even bother to put it inside a cardboard box. The shipping label was slapped onto the side of the manufacturer box itself. Also there wasn't a clear sticker around the flaps to indicate whether or not the box had been sealed up before shipping. When I went to open it up and looked through the contents, I noticed that the pci raid controller card was missing. Called Newegg and they have filed a claim but I'll have to wait 3-5 days before they tell me their decision.

Other Thoughts: It sounded like a good buy but I'm not even going to bother with it and am returning it for a full refund.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

All of the product should package in an Newegg shipping box. In case of missing parts or shipping damage, please contact Newegg for immediate response.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY FOR 2008 64 BIT

Pros: None for 2008 x 64....

Cons: Simply put the controller card does not work. Now I will have to eat the return policy restocking fee. I am never ordering another raid product from Newegg business.

Other Thoughts: The technical details stated it works for "Windows". It's not like windows 2008 was just released. Very irresponsible for the manufacturer not to release the fact it will not work with 2008

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The bundled controller card support Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The bundled controller card is a AHCI based controller card that does not require any driver. Simply install the controller card to the computer and it will detect as part of your storage controller.

1 out of 5 eggsSimply doesn't work

Pros: I haven't tested this device in a Windows of Linux environment, so I can't judge those drivers.

Cons: I got one of these from Newegg for a client as a local mini-RAID to do video offlays to from their Final Cut workstations. These systems run OS X 10.6. The driver available for 10.6 is version 1.0, which is discouraging. The included Promise RocketRaid 62X claims to support RAID 1, 0, 1+0 and 5, but using the AJA benchmarking tool to hit the drives with heavy data usage in *any* of those RAID modes results in drive cut-out and array failure after a few minutes. Upon reboot the array magically reappears and in redundant arrays the data is recoverable.

Newegg cross-shipped a replacement and with a whole new box and card the same issue re-occurred. Even when I configured the drives in a JBOD and used the OS X drive utility to RAID them drive cut-out happened. Even on Promise's website there is no newer driver. I tried this with both Seagate 2TB Barracuda ES (6Gb) drives, and Samsung 2TB F4 drives, with both of the two enclosures I got, and the same issues persisted.

Other Thoughts: During the few minutes of operation I got with the unit, 4 striped Seagate Barracuda ES 2TB drives gave read performance of about 260MB/s, and write performance of around 225MB/s. The Samsung F4 (2TB) drives which are much slower (5400 RPM) provided the same results, so its clear this is the limit of the included RAID card. (3 software-striped Barracuda ES drives inside the same workstation yielded almost 350MB/s read and 290MB/s write)

While the included RAID card is a SATA III (6Gb/s) card, the port multiplier chip in the enclosure box is only an SATA II (3Gb/s) part, so even with a more capable RAID card, the maximum theoretical bandwidth available from the external enclosure is around 300MB/s

As far as I can tell, the included RAID controller simply doesn't work in OS X 10.6. Since I tested two brand new units and they both behaved and failed identically. Avoid this unit for Mac or if you're expecting any sort of serious performance from your array using the included RAID car

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

The TR4UT-B is a hardware RAID model. It does not use the controller card to setup RAID. Please locate the switch on the back for RAID setup. The driver version for MAC will use a legacy mode driver, which will show a single RAID drives in MAC. The version of the drivers is 1.1LA.

We use the same AJA testing for product benchmark. Our setting use 2048x1556 10bit RGB, READ+Write test, 16G files. We do not experience issues with the data transfer. Please let us know if you have more problem with the setup.

For the performance, With port multiplier, or hardware RAID model, it limited on the eSATA cable that you connect to. If you looking for higher performance model, we suggest to use TR8X-BP or TR4X-BHA, which provide hard drives connection directly to the bundled RAID card. It reach about 650MB+ with 8 drives.

Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at tech@sansdigital.com if you have any issues. We can help to resolve the pr

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Good quality

Pros: Very fast system. Cheap as well.
Got 220MB/s Read and 204MB/s Write on 4 Seagate 528AS 1TB RAID 5 connected to Intel ICH10R eSata.

Cons: I tried the Highpoint 622 card that comes with it got only
158MB/s on read and 122MB/s on write.

Don't think the boundled 6Gbps 622 would beat intel ICH10R which support 3Gbps only.

If highpoint can provide an updated driver would be great. But before that I am going to recommand people using the onboard intel ICH10R esata port to get better performance.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice if the unit has power saving device. If not not active then "soft" shutdown the raid unit. Once any request comes in, wake it up.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat versitile enclosure

Pros: Fast eSATA 6GB card included. Easy to configure, great capacity

Cons: Poor monitoring software for MAC.

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of these units, putting 4 2TB hdd's in each. Took 10 minutes to set up and set RAID. Currently pulling sustained read speeds of 219MB/sec.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Relatively cheap. Easily configured 3x1.5Tb Seagates in raid 5. After replacing the fan (with one that worked...) drives idle around 40C.

No issues with bundled esata card on Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04.

Included raid "software" application works under win7.

Cons: 80mm exhaust fan was DOA. Of course I didn't notice until I had configured raid and transferred data for over an hour. SMART indicates my disks hit 67C. I'm not thrilled about that...

With some fancy wire work I was able to replace the fan with a spare.

Very loud. The fan itself is whisper quiet, but the airflow through the box makes it sound like a vacuum! (Taking the cover off the box eliminates the noise, but also airflow over drives). Its far louder than my antec 1200 with all fans at max speed.

Tech support never answered my email. (Granted it was a stupid question, but some sort of response would have been nice...)

Other Thoughts: I had originally intended to use this for primary storage, but I find the noise so disruptive that I have to leave it off most of the time. In hindsight, I should have picked up a cheap raid card instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products. Your product is cover by one year warranty including your cooling fan.

5 out of 5 eggsA great product

Pros: This enclosure is great and pretty cheap if you need an external enclosure with hardware RAID support. Setting up standard RAID 5 was as simple as flipping a few switches and it was ready to go. Hard drive installation was just about as simple as possible. Also, I can't even hardly hear the fan running.

Cons: The optional monitoring software that comes with the enclosure is ok, but nothing too great.

Other Thoughts: In my case this setup is perfect, I needed an external enclosure that provided hardware RAID support because I have a laptop that I have it connected to. Other external enclosures that offer RAID support normally require you to install a card in your computer, but with a laptop this is impossible to do so this was perfect for me and it's working great so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGood gear

Pros: Works are expected, Hardware RAID5, SATA2, eSATA. No effort install. 220+ Mbps

It presents it self as a raw disk

Cons: None really..

Other Thoughts: In use as an external array attached to a FreeNAS VM. I'll by more, nothing like a storage array you can pick up and run away with..
