The TowerRAID TR5UT is a hardware RAID 5 five bay with USB 2.0 eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MB/s performance. Built-in support for RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare support and JBOD, the TR5UT provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failure. New RAID mode, CLONE mode or N-Way Mirror, are introduced to support the same copy of the data in all of the hard drives installed.
The hardware RAID enclosure also eliminates OS compatibility issues, since no software is required. In order to satisfy the need for performance hungry applications, each unit is bundled with PCIe 2.0 x1 two ports eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0 Gbps (6G) support (Highpoint Tech R622 Controller card). PCIe 2.0 provides twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0 unit, allowing over 200MB/s performance in PCIe 2.0 support slot.
Backwards compatibility with PCIe 1.0 slots allows for using the unit in any PCIe slot, to provide eSATA connectivity for the computer without eSATA build-in. Designed with easy installation in mind, TR5UT comes with 5 easy to install hard drives trays and a dust-free protective ventilating cover. The TR5UT is the ultimate eSATA RAID 5 storage for all of your storage needs.
Quiet and performs pretty well
Pros: * Pretty fast: 200 MB/sec read / 140 MB/sec write on a Raid 10 across four WD 2TB drives and 120 MB/sec read / 80 MB/sec write on a Raid 5 across five WD 2TB drives
Cons: * Came with the raid selector cable internally disconnected. Not a big deal for someone who is comfortable opening the case and checking things out - but many users will find the unit useless
Other Thoughts: Running Linux the 6Gbit card isn't stable unless you have the latest kernel. 2.6.32 and newer seem to work without issues - at least 6 days of bonnie++ ran without a single error or warning.
