1 out of 5 eggsGood so far, but some frustrations

Pros: Compact, 1U, 4 hot-swap bays. Supports large drives. SATA, SAS or SSD (with adapter).

Clean, simple design that works.

Drives appear to have appropriate airflow and overall power consumption is reasonable.

Unit is relatively quiet (have heard many that are far louder).

Cons: Some frustrations:

1) The rackmounts are for square insert - installing into a Chatsworth MegaFrame, these are appropriate. However, the screw diameter and thus the nut diameter are *NOT* standard size. You have to use the ones provided.

2) Square mounts - when installing the nuts, there is a tendency that they may "fly" off while trying to get them properly seated, thus you can lose them. Also, the ears that hold the nut can break. At least two spares should be included.

3) The position of the handles / "pull points" interfere with installation of the bolt unless you at the very 'outside' of the elongated hole. This is not going to be the "norm" as you would be more center.

4) The nuts on the outside that are used to secure the handles/rackmount ears stick out far enough that you have to significantly angle the unit and then rotate back to horizontal. YOU CANNOT SLIDE THE UNIT DIRECTLY INTO A 1U OPENING BETWEEN TWO EXISTING DEVICES.

5) The screws that are inserted in the drive cages, connected with a plastic "stay", were tightened to the point where one would be fearful that they'd bend the drive cage getting them out.

6) The locking front/handle for the drive cages may break if you aren't extremely careful when inserting or removing.

7) No rear mounting rails are included. The front ears (only) are insufficient for rack mounting given the weight of the unit and the material from which the front ears are made.

Other Thoughts: All in all, Sans Digital has been around for some time. They tend to make some excellent units with innovative designs. Would like to see improvements in some of their products (such as this one) before considering the purchase of another Sans Digital unit.

Not necessarily a "con", but the blue LED is excessively bright. You wouldn't notice it much as this device will be in a rack, but it's far brighter than anything else in the *entire* rack.

The pictures show both the front (ear) mount points and side rails for rear mounting. The unit I received did *NOT* include side/rear mounting rails. In checking the Sans Digital website, they mention an "L" bracket and an optional second power supply - however all the documentation depicts that these rails are included.

Will update/add another review as appropriate.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well, and inexpensive

Pros: We purchased this for Just A Bunch of Disks (JBOD) for our server rack. We using it for CHEAP STORAGE, to backup files to using Backup Exec. We needed something that would talk SAS because we already had a MINI SAS controller that was backing up our Enterprise to TAPE. Surprisingly Dell/HP/IBM didn't sell a cheap solution. With (4) 2TB drives, giving us a cool 8TB of storage, we "extended" a small rackmount server that already had 3TB of storage in it for backups. 11TB of hard disk space for backups! HOW COOL IS THAT, all for ~$500 for the device and ~$400 for drives!

Cons: Not a huge knock, but the rails are designed for round hole racks, we have square. Our clips don't properly line up to these rails. I bet it lines up fine in a round hole telco rack though.

Other Thoughts: This is a device built to be used for tons of cheap storage. It isn't a RAID set (but Sans Digital sells those too)... but for JBOD, this is perfect, and does so inexpensively, reliably, and simply. What else could you want?
