The TowerRAID TR8X-BP is an 8-bay RAID 5 tower with mini-SAS connection for high transfer rates of up to 650MB/s. The TR8X-BP is bundled with a high-performance RAID controller card (RR2722, PCIe 2.0 x8 6G RAID controller) that offloads complicated RAID calculations from the computer to lower CPU utilization. High performance could be achieved with a lower cost of ownership compared to RAID embedded subsystems. RAID setup and maintenance could be controlled via built-in web browser interfaces, and the unit is supportive of e-mail notification and real-time event log.

Utilizing high bandwidth mini-SAS (SFF-8088) cabling, the TR8X-BP supports 6Gb/s SAS or SATA hard drives to deliver superior read / write speeds that are crucial in performance-driven environments such as video editing industry and high performance computer. The mini-SAS connection connects eight hard drives connections into two ports, reducing possible points of failures, while preserving uninterrupted data transfer. The TR8X-BP also supports SATA drives, allowing you the option to choose between high performance and high capacity storage solutions. Windows, MAC, Linux and VMware ESX/ESXi 4.0 are supported.

  • newegg 8 SAS/SATA Drive Trays The SANS DIGITAL TR8X-BP features cable-less backplate design supporting the hot-swap of SATA 6G and SAS 6G hard drives with removable trays for easy installation and replacement without the need to shut down the whole system. And the support for next generation SAS/SATA port enables lightning fast data transfer speed of 6Gbps.
  • newegg RAID Controller Card Included A PCIe 2.0 x8 6G controller is included to the offload the complicated RAID calculation from the computer to controller card for lower processor usage for better system response.
  • newegg Data Protection The SANS DIGITAL TR8X-BP supports multiple RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, 1+0, 5, and JBOD (w/ Hot Spare) to ensure data integrity.

3 out of 5 eggsWhere is the SPEED ???

Pros: Great product based on specs... SAS and SATA 6Gb/s
Transfer speed up to 750Mb/s
I use 3 x SATA 6gb/s Western Digital Caviar Black 1T in Raid 5
and 5 x SATA 6Gb/s SEAGATE 1T in Raid 5
Great config... motherboard Asus P6X58D, 12GB 2000Mhz, i7 980x, ATI Radeon 57xx ...

Cons: The speed is not there... yet? Still do not understand WHY
all disk are detected as "SATA 300" for SATA 3Gb/s instead of
SATA 6Gb/s !!! which is what they are... cannot find any info or setup either on the Raid controller RR2722 that came with it nor on the TR8X-BP very small manual...
Still hoping to have the setup recognize the 6Gb/s disks !

Other Thoughts: The online manual is clear about SAS 6gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s
which is why I choose this model TR8X-BP over everything else...

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The performance of 750MB/s is correct. Some of the newer 6G drives may detected as 3G. Please download the latest BIOS update and it will be correctly detected 6G. However, it does not have any performance increase or decrease as it is only display issues.

Please contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at, and we can send you the update firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Excellent hardware RAID. Have both RAID 0 (2 SAS drives) & RAID 5 (3 SATA2 drives). Easy installation of drives. Excellent enclosure manufacturer pre-sales support and after sale support. Overall simple setup once included RAID controller card resolved. Enclosure with included very good RAID card is doing it's job once setup.

Cons: Problems during install of included RAID controller card. Altho important to install updates from manufacturer website for WEBGui & driver, don't install latest BIOS.
1st problem was no bootup ctrl-H option as stated in setup instructions (resolved later after resolution of 2nd problem but actually its unneccessary anyway). 2nd, received error code 110 etc on cmptr boot. After much research, went back to HP pdf manual and found error code specific to my motherboard which turned out to be not enough memory space to load RAID card option ROM which is why no ctrl-H boot option. Since my mobo has both sas & sata built in controllers, had to remove the one sata drive (used for backup of media files) in my otherwise sas drive system & disable sata controller in cmptr BIOS. Once I did that, I started receiving non-system disk error on bootup. I eventually realized that the new RAID controller card had reorganized my BIOS boot order & I moved the bootup SAS drive to its proper BIOS position.

Other Thoughts: All problems resolvable with patience. I learned things I never had to deal with in my 30 years working with personal computers in order to install enclosure and RAID card but that same experience led me not to panic. It was a worthwhile effort and I'm very pleased with the result.
