Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4UTBPN - Four-Bay USB 3.0 / eSATA Hardware RAID 5 Tower

Features

Sans Digital

The TowerRAID TR4UTBPN is a four-bay hardware RAID 5 storage tower that utilizes high performance USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MBps in performance. The included USB 3.0 port is backwards compatible with widely available USB 2.0 ports, which is a convenient feature when both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections are unavailable.

With built-in RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare and JBOD, the TR4UTBPN provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. A brand new RAID mode, CLONE or N-Way Mirror, is also introduced to replicate the saved data throughout each installed hard drive. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure and performs all RAID parity calculation to reduce CPU utilization from the host PC. RAID controller cards are unnecessary. The TR4UTBPN is the ultimate RAID storage for all storage needs.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Power Supply

Pros: Quit and cheap

Cons: Power Supply Fails, The power supply comes on and off unmounting and mounting the drives and has caused a hard drive in it to fail. Not worth the money saved.

1 out of 5 eggsObsolete drive size, Mac support

Pros: Terrific for smaller hard drives

Cons: Useless for today's really big drives
Config software is really old

Other Thoughts: This thing definitely supports 3 TB drives. The documentation suggests it might support 4 TB drives, but I haven't tried it. The thing definitely does NOT support 6 TB drives.

The original SANS config software was pretty useless, so they sent me the JMicron config software. It's about 5 years old now, and no updates seem to exist.

The config software is not reliable under Mac OS Yosemite.

1 out of 5 eggsSans Digital

Pros: Not worth ink in the paper

Cons: Purchased direct from SD. First one came broken missing parts. Contacted SD, they DEMANDED proof with pictures. SD exchanged for new. Again will not work PC Windows 7 Pro, will not recognize it. Their tec. was able to see on PC but again will not work. Returned for exchange of Accunas. The unit has the same problems, windows 7 will not recognize LENUX in the system. After 10 try's with tech support I gave up RETURNED. SD Blamed us for the problems. Here is where problems started: Suns Digital refused to return money as I paid second time for upgrade. SD always saying we will process the refund shortly. Contacted CCard with complaint. SD still refused to refund. After 4 months and 5 days (This is over 125 days FINALLY BANK credit back to my account. Finally they issued a partial credit for something I paid for in full.
YES I HAVE AXE TO DRIVE. STAY AWAY FOR YOUR PEACE OF MIND AND YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK. You have been warned, have other

2 out of 5 eggsFailed Power Supply

Pros: Works well for having a mirrored data set. Running 2 sets of mirrored 1TB drives. Hard to lose your data when it's RAID 1.

Cons: Power supply stinks. Power the device off. Never powers back on. Paper weight. This is the 2nd one of these to have the power supply fail. All I did was shut it off. Refuses to turn back on.

1 out of 5 eggsWould not buy

Pros: Quiet, Good price, Easy to configure

Cons: Very high failure rate on power supplies

Other Thoughts: I have purchased 3 of these enclosures with their ages ranging from 3 years to less than 6 months old. Up until this year I would have highly recommended this external raid system. In the last 2 months I have had the power supply fail in two of them. That is a 66% failure rate within a 3 year time period and I wholly expect the third one to fail within that same time frame. I know that it is not a problem with my power source. I work as a IT consultant and the first failure happened on the one attached to my primary development PC which has virtually been on 24/7 for the last 6 years. The second failure happened on the one attached to my main media center PC which has been 24/7 for the last 4 years. In both cases the Sans Digital Raid tower was plugged into the same conditioned power source as the PC.

I suspect that the problem lies with poor quality standards from the power supply manufacture coupled with the low volume fan used in the enclosure. I do like how supper quiet this tower raid is, but I would gladly give up a couple of decibels if it increased the power supplies life.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Quality Power Supply

Pros: Good connection, fast USB 3.0 transfer

Cons: bad quality power supply I have bought 2 of these and both went out little over a year later after powering down and never turned back on. I have a computers that are way over 10yrs on the same power supply?

Other Thoughts: Contacted SansDigital for resolution still have not heard back from them but upon reviewing there website I did see they sell the power supply for $80

2 out of 5 eggspower supply failures

Pros: while it worked, it was great. Assembled 3TB in RAID-5 via eSATA for less than $600 (in 2012).

Cons: client ordered. I installed two units for server storage expansion and backup. Two years later both units have failed power supplies.

Other Thoughts: could be a great unit, if they can increase power supply longevity.
