Sans Digital Four-Bay eSATA RAID 0 / 1 / 10 / 5 / JBOD Tower Storage Enclosure with 6G PCIe Card

Features

Sans Digital

The TowerRAID TR4M+B is a compact RAID tower utilizing the latest SATA II port multiplier technology, where one single eSATA cable connects to four 3Gbps SATA II hard drives. Bundled with a high performance RAID controller card RR622, its RAID 5 performance is capable of reaching over 200MBps. Online expansion is included in the controller card so that RAID can be expanded without the need to recreate the storage space or erase the existing data. Advanced monitoring functions include real time hard drives health status and e-mail notification for critical events.

Designed with easy installation in mind, the trayless TR4M+B allows instant setup by simply inserting the hard drives after opening the protective ventilating cover. The included dual-port eSATA 6GBps PCIe 2.0 x1 RAID controller card allows the connection of up to two TR4M+B units (up to eight hard drives) using only two cables, while all drives can be configured into single or multiple RAID arrays, providing over 200MBps in performance.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad.

Pros: Had lasted me about 3 years before a power outage in my area finally killed it/overloaded internal power supply, I guess.

Cons: It *does* slow your boot times but not by as much as some people on here claim. We're talking 30 secs at best.

It *was* a pain to get the FW updated (necessary), but after that - no problems.

The initial setup of the Raid 5 array took overnight with four 2TB drives but after that, again, no problems.

Other Thoughts: I'm actually ordering a new one today because of the power outage killing this one. I wish I had paid for the 3yr protection from NE last time because I just made it to that point. I'm paying for it this time to save myself a pricey re-purchase if this happens again (or anything else - see a couple of other negative comments here) so next time it's on NE's dime. :)

An overall positive experience...even though I never received a response from contacting tech support through their web site several times.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little box until this morning. :)

Pros: I've been using this little box since I got it back in December 2011 and it's traveled a few times via road trip to other locations and back without issue. This weekend I took it for it's final trip down the street to my work where we used it for Global Game Jam 2014. It worked smoothly while there. I've ran a JBOD 6TB array with 2 3TB Seagate Barracuda XT drives (Model: ST33000651AS) and a 2TB mirror using 2 2TB Samsung HD204UI's basically since getting it. I've never really had an issue with the box until today. All issues I had were I'm sure related to the free Rocket Raid card that came with it.

Cons: As of this morning the box will not power up even with no drives attached. I'm assuming something finally popped inside it. I looked around for a fuse in it but didn't find anything. :( If anyone has some suggestions for me to try before I look into replacing this I'm open to suggestions.

The included Rocket Raid Card caused a ton of bluescreen errors under Windows 7 even after upgrading the firmware. Didn't happen when my mirror array drives were not in the box. Included RR card finally died July 2013. I replaced it with Item# N82E16816115130 as I read that the free one didn't supply enough bandwidth through PCIe Slot to power my mirror array so I figured it was worth a try. Installed it and it pulled my raid config off the drives which I was worried wouldn't happen. Rarely does this new card drop offline... Like once every 2-3 months but when it does there's an audible alarm. I fix it by rebooting the machine.

The only bad thing I can say about the TR4M+B though is that it died today and I can't afford to replace it right now. But I'd say it gave me a good run for my money. Just wish it would have lasted a lot longer.

Other Thoughts: If you're having problems with this box maybe try a different raid card?

Would I buy this again?
I'm considering it. But I don't want a restocked one that may have been sent back from another reviewer. :-\ I'm sure a few of them do actually have issues and I hear the horror stories of getting a restocked item several times after purchasing a poorly reviewed item. Maybe I just got lucky with this one though /shrug I may try it again come payday.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Poor QC

Pros: Don't know. Haven't been able to use it to its full capacity since I bought it

Cons: Doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: This is my second review since I cant update my first. As of now Im giving it a 1 egg because I can't give it zero Eggs. I Purchased in May and it Broke in July, took until October to get ahold of support. I was about to talk to an attorney when they finally replied to my emails. Had to troubleshoot with them for a week. They finally agreed it need to be repaired so they told me I had to return an in warranty item to them at my cost to ship the device for repair. I run a business If I ever told the customer that they had to pay for shipping a warranty repair I'd loose business. This is the only company I've every had require this. Dell, HP, Western Digital all sent a replacement and I would ship it back in that box. Today I received the device back on December 10th and it still doesn't work. The device will only see the drive in Bay 1, and if you put more then one drive in the device it wont see anything. same as before, and the reason why I payed to send it in for repair. It says that it suppose to come with the card but I never received one to start with. I've tried to use this on several computers but they all do the same thing as I described. Should have saved up and got the Synology or a D-Link. At least with them if the item was defective I would have gotten a replacement by now and been up and running.

2 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 failed after 4 months of use

Pros: ability to raid two bays (8 drives)

Cons: failed with a clicking after i finally got around to putting it to use this year. lasted 4 months. not 24/7 use.

second bay is still functional. but lost too many drives of my raid and cannot recover data. warranty is up on the bay, now that i got around to using it over a year later.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

For "Clicking" I believe you have a filaed power supply, not the "clicking" from the hard drives right? It's weird to have failed power supply for such a short period of time on this unit. However, we do warranty it with 1 year.

If you have problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for email support.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Management Capability

Pros: The enclosure seemed to perform well enough and the construction of it was well done.

Cons: Boot up of the RAID card is very slow.
The management software and its documentation was very confusing and poor. I don't think I would had been able to rebuild the RAID if I needed to. That was what made me try another product.

Other Thoughts: I ended up going with a different company that sells standalone NAS devices and am very happy with their products.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

About the boot up of the RAID card, if you are using the RR622 card that came with it, it's possible to do a BIOS update on it to get rid of the BIOS utility screen in order to reduce the boot up time. You may contact our tech support for such updates.

The management software of the RR622 card (AKA Highpoint Web RAID management) is relatively simple comparing to the management software from other RAID card's companies. Basically once you have got logged in to the main page just click on the "Create Array" button and choose several RAID options (most of them are already chosen with a best default settings) and click "Create" and it's done. As always, if there's anything you are not sure or need help with, please contact our tech support and we are more than happy to help you out quickly.

2 out of 5 eggsHardly worked right from the start.

Pros: Inexpensive and easy to work with. Great for its price

Cons: Tends to drop drives and requires a reboot to get them back online.

Other Thoughts: Purchased in May 2013 and it now only sees drives in the first bay. If I put any other drives in it, it won't work at all. Worked great for the first 6 weeks with 3TB drives. Then started dropping drives 2 and 3 requireing a reboot of the system. Now in October it quit working. Removed drives 2 and 3 and it will now read bay one. Bays 2, 3 and 4 and useless. Was never even able to get to setup any raid due to it constantly dropping drives. Basically its a $150 HD external case right now.. Have sent several emails on it dropping drives with no response. Have tried to call but only get round and round with their phone system. Going to try one more time to email. After that is in the trash and I'll never buy from them again.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

Were the drives dropped out during file transfer? Are you using the RR622 card that came with it to connect? What type of hard drives are you using, desktop or Enterprise drives? I strongly suggest you to contact our tech support again. We are pretty confident on our tech support that will get you a response with at most 24 hours (either email or phone call). If in case there's nobody available to take your call, please leave a brief message so that we can get back to you promptly. We are more than welcome to help you out at all time. If you had already been working this problem out with our tech support, please continue to do so until you can get a satisfactory result.

2 out of 5 eggsPower Supply Under Rated

Pros: 4 Drives of 3TB makes for huge and cheap storage. Can do all RAID options but 6 and 60. Lots of other good options.

Cons: Power Supply under powered, drops drives because of it.

Other Thoughts: Has a 235 watt at 250 volt power supply, but at 110 volts, that drops to 60 watts. Not enough to run 4 drives, and barely enough to run 1. Tried with 4 - 3TB drives in a 9 TB RAID 5, and array would not finish building before it dropped a drive or two. Swapped out drives for 500GB. Actually went thru and finished building a 1.5TB RAID 5. Next day, power supply failed. Shipped back to Sans Digital, same issue on return, power supply died again in two day. Went into Frankenstein mode (rather than pay to ship it back to Sans Digital again, and installed a 300 Watt ATX power supply externally (Grounded green #14 wire to chassis with on/off switch to turn off and on). Has run without a hiccup with all 4 - 3TB drives in a 9TB RAID 5 for 4 months with no problems.
Plan to do the same thing to my TRM8+B, as I cannot put more than 4 drives in it without it crashing, and it still drops a drive once a week and need to rebuild.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

The TR4M+B unit is with 150W at 110v. We have tested the unit with 3TB (even with 4TB drives recently) and they all run fine with the stock power supply. Therefore, we have found a bit strange to what you were experiencing. Our power supplies are guaranteed to run for at least 1 year, so it's even more strange to see a power supply died in two days. Suggest contacting our tech support for some troubleshooting in order to dig out the main reasons behind.

1 out of 5 eggsRemoving from WHS2011 Due to BSOD

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Removing the TR4M+b from a WHS2011 server due to increasing frequency of BSOD related to the included HighPoint RocketRAID 622 SATA controller (rr62x.sys Bugcheck 0xD1). Complicating matters the server has to be power cycled to recover the system. WHS2011 will BSOD, reboot, BSOD again, and reboot to Windows Recovery. The server will remain in that state until it is powered off and on. The time between BSOD events is decreasing.

Disabling the PCI Express "Link State Power Management" per suggestions found on the internet made no difference as the rr62x.sys driver continues to BSOD the server.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

BSOD on this unit usually is related to either the driver or some hardware issues on the card or unit. If the BSOD still exist even though the TR4M+B unit is turned off, then the RR622 card should be the culprit. Driver on WHS2011 is tested and should be ok, you may consider contacting tech support for the proper driver if you had not. If a proper driver does not help, then it could just be the hardware issue on this particular RR622 card.

If you have problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for email support.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Well.It runs with no issues for 2 months now.Raid five (4 hitachi deskstars 1tb)with RR-622 installed on an ASUS M5A97 that runs a built in RAID 0 2 SSDs with no conflicts. On a gigabit switch it gives me transfers between 80-100mb/sec.I disable the sleep pcie function on win7 .Works like a champ.Useful webgui keeps statistics and reports errors.None so far reported.

Cons: Takes time to boot as most raids. So dont reboot.LOL!
Also the initial Raid building took 24hrs to complete.

Other Thoughts: I also own the older TR4M-B. It was giving me trouble on my 2008 server(loosing drives or decreased RAID integrity or rebuilting RAID) until i disable the pci sleep feature. I have peace of mind since. No more errors or failures.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't put your computer to sleep

Pros: Fast. Works fine until I put my computer to sleep.

Cons: I don't like the case, even if it is toolless. It's hard to get the top on or off. You're risking your knuckles.

After I put my computer (a 2008 Mac Pro) to sleep and wake it up again, I can't access any of the drives until I reboot the computer. Sans Digital blames HPT, the manufacturer of the SATA PCI card. It may be their fault, but it's now my problem. I've been waiting over two months for a fix. I'm not inclined to buy another Sans Digital or HPT product again.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital Product.

MAC Pro sleeping mode issues is supported by the latest driver updates. Please download it from our website or contact us to obtain the drivers.

If you are having problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for e-mail supports.
