The TowerRAID TR5UT+ is a 5-bay hardware RAID 5 storage tower that utilizes high performance USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MB/s in performance. The included USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with widely available USB 2.0 ports, which is a convenient feature when both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections are unavailable. With built-in RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare and JBOD, the TR5UT+ provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. A brand new RAID mode, CLONE or N-Way Mirror, is also introduced to replicate the saved data throughout each installed hard drive. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure and performs all RAID parity calculation to reduce CPU utilization from the host PC. RAID controller cards are unnecessary.

To satisfy the need for performance demanding applications, the unit is bundled with a 2-port PCIe 2.0 x1 eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0 Gbps (6G) support (RR622 controller card). PCIe 2.0 is capable of providing twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0, allowing over 200MB/s in performance. The unit is also backward compatible with PCIe 1.0 slots to provide eSATA connectivity for computers that do not have built-in eSATA ports. Designed with easy installation in mind, the TR5UT+ allows effortless installation by simply inserting the hard drive tray (with the hard drives installed) after opening the attractive ventilating door. The TR5UT+ is the ultimate RAID storage for all storage needs.

  • newegg Excellent Performance The Sans Digital TR5UT+ storage tower can accommodate five SATA I / SATA II hard drives and provides over 200MB/s read and 170MB/s write performance over the built-in USB 3.0 / eSATA interface, providing an ideal storage expansion and data backup solution for home/small business environment.
  • newegg Controller Card Included SATA 6.0Gbps PCIe 2.0 x1 controller card is included to add two eSATA ports to your PCIe-enabled host computer and provides over 200MB/s performance.

5 out of 5 eggsBest purchase in a long time

Pros: Solid construction
Rear exhaust fan
Standard power converter & cheap plug combination like most other enclosures.
Easy setup
eSATA/Port multiplier card included

Cons: Not a one so far

Other Thoughts: Setup was absolutely a breeze. I needed the port multiplier since my SuperMicro mini server doesn't support it on board. Plugged the PCI card into my FreeBSD 10.1 box and it was picked up as expected. Plugged in 4 drives existing drives formatted ZFS and imported them just like any other onboard SATA device.

I was getting sick of less than reliable USB connectivity due to cheap enclosures and this so far is working perfectly.

Note that I am using it in clean mode (without RAID) since I like to have my backup drives able to be rotated offline without the hassle of RAID. All of my backups are done disk to disk via RSYNC.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING!!!!

Pros: We own 5 of these, and they are GREAT! I would NEVER go back to a Web-GUI-interface for setting up RAID.

This hardware RAID requires no drivers, and always mounts properly. Make sure to follow the directions for RAID setup. Having a hot-spare is not useful for us, but ingenious on the part of Sans-Digital.

They're rated to accept SATA 3G/s hard drives, but we've used 3TB 6G/s drives, and they work just fine.

I highly recommend getting 'enterprise-grade' drives to go in them. We haven't had to deal with a hard drive failure in one of these yet, but when we finally do, I'll know more about that.

I cannot say enough good things about these units!

...Oh yeah, and Sans Digital's tech support is *wonderful*. You get a knowledgeable, helpful, live person!

Cons: One in five had a manufacturing defect on the front plastic panel, which Sans Digital has offered to replace. Hmmm... now we just need a place to temporarily store that 12TB...

eSATA PCIe card only has two ports, instead of four. Kind of a waste of a PCIe slot for us, since we do so much over eSATA.

When you swap out a bad drive for a new one (we haven't had to do this, but have run tests doing it), no matter how much data is stored on your RAID, it rebuilds the entire space of the drive, which can take overnight to complete. Even if you only have 2GB of data stored on it... I guess this just means it's format-agnostic. Ours are all HFS+

Other Thoughts: We always connect to these over eSATA. Sometimes, they will show right up. Sometimes we have to reboot. Mac Pro 10.6.8.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased with purchase

Pros: This was my first experience setting up a RAID, so I was expecting a couple hiccups - there were none. Setup was fast and simple. I was backing up data before I knew it.

Cons: A little on the expensive side, the door seems a little flimsy, and one of the screws snapped while attaching one of my drives to the slide. With that said, I still gave this unit 5 eggs over 4.

Other Thoughts: Sans Digital has a lot of similar units. Go through the specs and make sure you're ordering exactly what you need. For me, hardware RAID was important, and I think I found the perfect solution with this enclosure.
