SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR5UT+B - Five-Bay USB 3.0 / eSATA Hardware RAID 5 Tower with 6G PCIe 2.0 HBA (Black)

The TowerRAID TR5UT+B is a five-bay hardware RAID 5 storage tower that utilizes high performance USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MBps in performance. The included USB 3.0 is backwards-compatible with widely available USB 2.0 ports, which is a convenient feature when both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections are unavailable. With built-in RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare and JBOD, the TR5UT+B provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. A brand new RAID mode, CLONE or N-Way Mirror, is also introduced to replicate the saved data throughout each installed hard drive. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure and performs all RAID parity calculations to reduce CPU utilization from the host PC. RAID controller cards are unnecessary.


To satisfy the need for performance-demanding applications, the unit is bundled with a two-port PCIe 2.0 x1 eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0Gbps (6G) support (RR622 controller card). PCIe 2.0 is capable of providing twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0, allowing over 200Mbps in performance. The unit is also backward-compatible with PCIe 1.0 slots to provide eSATA connectivity for computers that do not have built-in eSATA ports. Designed with easy installation in mind, the TR5UT+B allows effortless installation by simply inserting the hard drive tray (with the hard drives installed) after opening the attractive ventilating door. The TR5UT+B is the ultimate RAID storage for all storage needs.

Other Thoughts: I bought mine in 2011 for use with a MediaSmart Server. I have had nothing but trouble ever since. I could not get the eSata connection to work reliably, so I had to use USB. I have had various hard drive data corruption issues over the years with this unit - which I interpreted to be caused by older disks, and/or heat because my older drives were not NAS drives.
I mothballed my server and this enclosure for a couple of years until I had time to do something about all the drive issues. (I had 4 disks in my WHS server, and 5 in this enclosure).
When I pulled this out a couple of weeks ago, I decided to pull all the old data drives and only use one WD NAS Red 4TB drive in it for the time being. While doing a partition recovery on another drive, I noticed that the NAS drive in the TR5UT+B would occaisionally drop offline for about 8 seconds then come back. If this was happening on all 5 drives on a server, I can imagine that the data could easily become corrupted.
I have never updated the firmware for this device, so I went looking for a download. The Sans Digital web site was not available. Have they gone out of business?

I'm now looking for a replacement enclosure, and so far like the Mobius from OYEN DIGITAL.

Pros: Nice looking enclosure (if it only worked)

Cons: 1. The eSATA interface does not work. Tried to use it on 3 different computers and 5 interfaces,
2. The USB 3.0 times out (PC Link indicator extinguishes) after 2 min without data transfer and will not start again. One must turn the power off to make it start again. Very strange behavior
3. The top burst transfer rate is ~10MB/s. This is the USB 2.0 rate. My single USB 3.0 drive achieves 75-100 MB/s transfer rate.
4. I tried to reach the company’s Tech Support. Nobody even answered the phone for 3 days. Has the company gone out of business?
5. The provided monitoring software does not install in Windows 7 64-bit Professional nor Windows 10. I was unable to find a later version on their website.
6. The fan is extremely noisy even at idle.
7. The drive bays are very hard to open if you don’t have long fingernails. I broke one on the thing, ouch.
8. I had to pay a $45.00 restocking fee plus postage to return it.

Pros: Price, maybe?

Cons: This has been nothing but problems since I plugged it in.

First, the RR622 that comes in the box is garbage. My computer would NOT start if that card was in it. The manual has instructions on how to fix it but why bother...

The drivers on the packaged disk are from 2010, and Sans Digital website only has the same drivers, v1.0. Went to High Point's website to find that they had Windows 10 drivers, yay, but THEY DONT WORK. I only installed the RR622 because I wasn't sure if my onboard eSATA plug had PM support, but I just plugged it in anyways and it worked. I formatted the drive and pow, started copying my stuff to it, then let that bake over night (copied a lot of stuff).

However, my complaint is that the next morning it was disconnected! The "PC Link" was still green. I rebooted several times and nothing. Eventually I just blew out the RAID config (lost the data obviously but I'm smart, were only copies), and whatta-ya-know it finally connected. Formatted again then started copying more data, but this time it disconnects immediately at file copy and STILL DOES NOT RECONNECT UNTIL I BLOW OUT THE RAID!!!!

Tried working with it all day.... Thought maybe I could to update the firmware using the "Hardware RAID Manager" application. It has an option to do that, but nope, nothing on SDs site.

And after reading the other comments for this product, I'm not even going to bother contacting support.

I'm done, packing it up and returning it, I don't want a replacement, the tiny manual was written by a 5 year old, the drivers are ancient, and my blood pressure is sky high.

Cons: Ordered 4 in January. One failed on delivery and was replaced by NewEgg. Since the two more have failed. 60% failure is not even close to acceptable E

Pros: It stores data.

Cons: If you are running Win7 you will constantly lose access to this unit. Every update throws this unit offline. When I say every update I mean EVERY FREAKING UPDATE! I addressed this problem with Sans Digital and never received a fix. If anything I received a condescending response. I can only speak from my experience.

Other Thoughts: I also suffered a catastrophic disk failure working off of this unit. When I restarted my machine, it came back but the entire folder I was working from disappeared... GONE. My other data was there but the files I was working on were vaporized.

Pros: Keeps drives cool.

Cons: I had 2 raid 5 volumes go bad. Files were there but currupted. Data was transferred via the USB 3.0 interface. Not sure if estate is any better, but others have had the same issue.

Cons: I would like to mirror the last two comments (Guy R. on 7/28/2014 and J.M. on 7/17/2014)..

I had this unit for about a year, configured as a 5-disk RAID-5 array. For a long time the unit worked just fine, serving up some media for my media center.. Then all of the sudden things started to go terribly wrong.

Over the past month I have had my data destroyed twice. The volume itself becomes corrupted and cannot be accessed by Windows anymore. I have to re-format it, and then attempt to recover the data (I have been using Recurva software to do the recovery).. But now that I have done that more than once, I am afraid that my data is gone forever

This first happened under Windows 7, and then I reloaded my PC with Windows 8, and the same problem happened again just a week after my reload (so I highly doubt it is an OS problem). At this point my data is gone, and I don't think I will be able to retrieve it anymore..

It doesn't seem that the disks themselves are failing, but the volume itself is becoming corrupted and unreadable, and I have to start over..

I bought this unit (and the drives) thinking that this was the best way to protect my data from loss, but it seems to have done just the opposite.

I used to recommend this unit to my friends and even some small business clients of mine that needed some type of inexpensive protected storage. I will no longer recommend this unit to anyone anymore.

Pros: Low cost eSATA + USB 3.0 Hardware RAID 5 solution
Good way to optimize storage


It literally took me years to realize that this awful enclosure is responsible for several catastrophic volume failures I have had.

Even though I've never had a physical drive fail in the enclosure, I've lost complete RAID volumes due to faulty firmware.

The problem seems to be cause by a dropped connection to the computer.

This happens both over eSata and USB 3.0

I own several enclosures, and this happened on two of them.

As a result, the RAID volumes become corrupt and unrecoverable.

I've had several volumes become unrepairable and read-only.

1 5x2TB hardware RAID 5
2 2x2TB software RAID 1 (Apple RAID via disk utility)
1 2x3TB software RAID 1 (Apple RAID via disk utility)

Other Thoughts: If you earn even just minimum wage, the hours you will spend in repair and recovery will cost more than a proper enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsTR5UT+B firmware needs some redesign for reliability

Pros: Really nice package. "Nominally" it works fine. Took awhile to set up. NOT plug and play! But if you read the setup directions, it is easy enough. For over 2 years, it kept my data secure.

Cons: Simple failures can become catastrophic. Twice, (once when I was playing at first and then now, about 2 years later.) I have had the failure of a hard drive in my RAID 5 array of 3TB drives. The first time, the array came back up and rebuilt fine. The last time, a 3TB drive failed and the array was still functional on 4 drives. Then I shut down, removed the bad drive, replaced the bad drive and powered back up. The new drive was "green" but did not rebuild. Worse, then the rest of the array became inaccessable except by the SansDigital Raid Monitor program. The program indicated that 4 drives were OK, and the new one was unassociated with the array. This was not the kind of "recovery" I was looking for. I am retiring the SansDigital and giving a Drobo B800fs a try. The most important thing about a RAID array is RELIABILITY. With unexpected problems like this, data reliability simply does not exist.

Other Thoughts: I think the Sans Digital TR5UT+B could be a good unit, but it would have to be fixed so that changing a defective drive COULD NOT destroy the array.
