TR8X+B The TowerRAID TR8X+B is a 8-bay tower with two mini-SAS connections, for high transfer rates of up to 750MB/s when used with a high performance RAID controller card. Utilizing high bandwidth mini-SAS (SFF-8088) cabling, the TR8X+B supports 6Gb/s SAS or SATA hard drives to deliver superior read / write speeds that are crucial in performance-driven environments such as video editing industry and server application. The mini-SAS ports combine eight hard drives connections into two, reducing possible points of failures, while preserving uninterrupted data transfer. The TR8X+B also supports SATA drives, allowing users the option to choose between high performance and high capacity storage solutions. Hard drive and RAID controller bundles options are available. When utilizing a SAS or SATA RAID controller, the unit could effortlessly support multi-streaming of compressed high-quality playback or a single-stream of uncompressed 10-bit high definition video under various RAID modes.

Note: Sans Digital recommends the use of enterprise hard drives when in use with any RAID controller applications. Standard desktop or green desktop drive may not be supported and may compromise RAID system stability and performance. For more information on the difference between RAID and desktop hard drives, please see the Western Digital knowledge base. 4 out of 5 eggsBad fans

Pros: It has worked well as an extension of an existing freenas box. I've had 8 3TB WD red drives in it running 24/7 for over a year with no problems.

Cons: The fans are junk. They are both cheap sleeve bearing fans so they are gonna die. The chassis fan is a 120mmx25mm which is easily replaced and I would recommend doing so. The power supply fan is an 80mmx15mm which is a little more difficult to replace and voids the warranty. I would recommend replacing the power supply fan as well. I recommend cougar for the 120mm and silenx for the 80mm since I've had good results from both in the past and both use fairly good hydrodynamic bearings which are quite a bit better than a standard sleeve. You might have to do some splicing of wires to get an aftermarket fan to work.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this drive chassis with the caveat that the fans are junk and when you buy the chassis go ahead and at least buy a 120mm case fan and replace the one that is in it since it is so easy. At least that way if the power supply fan goes out the case fan will still keep moving air.

5 out of 5 eggsGood choice

Pros: One of the most affordable 8-disk enclosure for 3.5 '' HD offering SFF-8088 connector.

Cons: Hard disk tray are not good quality one, but OK.

Other Thoughts: Mini-sas (2) cables (SFF-8088 both ends) that come with the chassis are only 1 meter long.......

2 out of 5 eggslow quality fans

Pros: works when it works

Cons: case fan died after 6 months of use. Power supply fan died 8 months later

Other Thoughts: when the case fan died I didn't want to go through the trouble of going through warranty. Now the power supply fan died after 14 months of use. Convenient for Sans Digital, as the warranty is 1 year and they charge $100 for a replacement power supply that shouldn't cost more than $20.

To anyone who already owns this unit: Be careful not to leave it unattended over extended periods of time. The fans appear to be extremely low quality and your nice little raid security may fall apart if all the drives overheat at the same time. If you use this enclosure, better sit next to it at all times when it's running, so you can catch the fans dying.

This is a product intended to provide data security - put some half-decent parts in it, Sans Digital!

1 out of 5 eggsSANS DIGITAL 8-bay tower

Pros: when they work... they're ok.

Cons: I purchased 4 of these and 2 have failed... on both the failed units, the top 4 slots connected to one side of the controller in the case failed. When they work, their fine, when they don't its hell to get them up again. Frankly i'm looking for a new disk enclosure company...

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

It seems like there could be some issues with this particlar two units with the top portion. Have you checked with our technical support to do some troubleshootings, and to see if there's a need to do an RMA replacement? Please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for email support.

5 out of 5 eggsBeats competition hands-down

Pros: I'd like to retract my previous review of the Rosewill RSV-S8. I own two of them and an RSV-S5, all purchased from Newegg, and always gave them a nod of approval not knowing any better. The Sans Digital version beats them all hands-down. The TR8X enclosure is nearly identical to Rosewill's except for slightly different backplane boards and black instead of chrome covers on the drive trays. The big difference is the controller. Both include a rather cheap-looking eSATA port multiplier software RAID 0/1/5/10/JBOD controller, but there is no comparison. The HighPoint RocketRAID-622SD included with the Sans Digital annihilates the Sil-3132-R5 that comes with the Rosewill. First of all, write performance in RAID-5 alone is at least 3-4 times that of the Sil controller, and that alone seals the deal for me. Secondly, while the Sil controller likes to spend days building arrays and checking for redundancy on almost every reboot, the HighPoint will build a 21TiB R5 in about 4 seconds. It takes longer for Windows to do a quick format on the volume than it takes the controller to create it. Third, the controller allows one array to span all 8 drives, whereas the Sil requires one array for each backplane/eSATA connection, or one for every 4 drives (or 5 in the case of the RSV-S5). Last, the Java-based management software that Sil provides is a far cry from the web-based management console of the RocketRAID. It provides email alerts, maintenance tasks, firmware upgrades, and a lot more, and lets you do so from any browser. The controller even has an audible buzzer that's not on the Sil board. If you want the best direct-attached RAID solution for this price range, look no further.

Cons: As with all eSATA devices, the connectors fall out easily, but one can hardly blame Sans Digital for that.

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these used for $125 and it's the best money I've ever spent on a storage appliance. I plan to buy several more of the included HighPoint controllers to replace the Sil-3132's on my Rosewill enclosures. These are confirmed to work, and I've also tested the controller with the Mediasonic ProBox. Any eSATA port multiplier device should work.

5 out of 5 eggsBest mini sas enclosure for the price

Pros: Easy installation of drives, fast, reliable, cheapest 8 bay mini-sas enclosure that I could find. Allows for super fast file transfers and fast editing of HD video no problem.

Cons: Blue LED light on the rear fan is a bit obnoxious for a somewhat professional product, but I keep the enclosure under my desk so it doesn't really bother me.

Other Thoughts: First one I got was DOA, but I was able to RMA with Newegg without any problems. The fan noise doesn't bother me, in fact I think for an enclosure with 8 hard drives it's pretty quiet.

4 out of 5 eggsNew fan of Sans Digital!

Pros: Shopped around a LOT before buying this. Very happy with my purchase!
quite fast. attractive looking. padded feet. largeish fans. uncomplicated. Sans tech support is very responsive and quite helpful.
Works VERY well with my LSI 9280-4i4e raid controller.

Cons: I had all high-powered hard drives in here, so this is probably more _my_fault_ than anyone elses, but it was kinda noisy, so having it sit next to a media center pc, or in your bedroom is not really recommended if you're a light sleeper like I am.

Other Thoughts: While this is a SAS enclosure with 2 minisas ports, it cannot be used simultaneously by 2 separatehost systems. For that you would need a Dell MD3220, or HP P2000, or the Sans Digital AccuRAID series. Or a NAS.

Also, since this is a jbod enclosure, if you need to make raids, you must connect to it with a raid sas controller installed in your host system.

3 out of 5 eggsOK Enclosure

Pros: Almost all black, side vents and rear fan for moving air through the case, front LEDs to show disk activity, included Mini-SAS cables

Cons: etched logo in white on sides, plastic HDD cartridges, fan has blue LEDs, power supply built with cheap capacitors/parts - its starting to hum after only a month, checking the Sans Digital forum shows others with the same problem

Other Thoughts: OK enclosure for bringing JBODs online, was sad about the above cons. The power supply hums which can be quite annoying at times. A small tap on the power supply will silence it for a while.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The power supply should not be humming and it is the first time we have customer issues. If you have continues to have this problem, please contact us and we will provide you the solutions.

Please contact our technical support at tech@sansdigital.com or 1-800-980-1988 and we can help you on the issues.
