2 out of 5 eggsSketchy Rebate Process

Pros: Mostly reviewing the rebate, but I will list some pros.

Hardware does what it says, plug and play with my system (JMicron JMB36X Controller on Abit IP35 Pro). Bought the item on super-special with a sizable rebate offer. LED lights indicate per drive power and activity. Easy to slide drives in, decent airflow.

Cons: After a few months, device began to lock-up and soft restart during disk activity making it very hard to manage outside of a hard power down on the unit.

Power plug is loose / flimsy. Feels like if I push the power cable in too hard it will break inside of the unit.

I gave this 2 eggs because I did, actually, get my rebate. The folks were very nice once I called to ask about it. The only problem was, I called 6 months after I submitted my rebate form. They "found" my application within seconds while I was on the phone, and it arrived within 2 weeks after that request. So in my experience, in order to get your rebate, you may very well have to call them. And since they're so nice, you may as well call them and ask them to fill the rebate out for you, then request they send you the check. Saves you an extra step!

Seriously Sans Digital, I'm not the first to complain about your rebates. Please give people their money. No need to respond to me, I likely won't be buying from you, at least for the next six months, and then you can call me and ask nicely. :-o

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after 2 years

Pros: Easy access to 4 SATA drives. Fast with eSATA interface. Worked as multiport JBOD with 2 TB WD Green drives.

Cons: Bought as bundle with an inexpensive esata card. Started to have drive issues and non-readable drive problems after about 2 years of VERY light use (maybe 500 GB total written across 4 drives). After trying this with 3 different esata cards (2 motherboard and one PCI-e card), I can clearly say the enclosure is broken. Powers up the disks but Windows 7 will not recognize the drives (3 different machines). Fortunately, I was able to put the drives into another enclosure since it is a JBOD device and my data was safe.

Other Thoughts: Since this was a destination for scheduled backup jobs on my workstation, I was very worried when Windows said the drives were corrupted. My data is safe and I am now steering clear of SansDigital as a backup device.

2 out of 5 eggsPSU failed after 2 years

Pros: When it worked with my WHS box (HP EX495) it worked flawlessly until last night. Held 4 2TB drives.

Cons: Last ngiht PSU clearly failed. Won't even turn on or give power lights.

Other Thoughts: I ordered a replacement since all my media is on it. Not worth the risk of WHS seeing a new enclosure differently (yes I know technically is uses the serial fo the drive but I have had issues with "disk 2 being 1 etc" when plugging in USB drives.

2 out of 5 eggs2 years then boom

Pros: Worked for awhile. Rearranged my office for a couple hours and when I went to plug this back in...nothing. No light, no fan, no work. The design of this is pretty simple, and as other have mentioned could easily be designed for hot swap on the fly useage but the design just doesn't seem thought through.

Cons: I do remember the first time setup was an issue for me because I required a port multiplier, wasn't just enough that I had e-sata support on my board. This was my fault and after I picked up the right expansion card I was good for a couple years.

Other Thoughts: I created a trouble ticket with Sans Digital, will modify my review depending on what happens.

2 out of 5 eggsNot especially reliable

Pros: I purchased this unit several months ago and had no trouble for the first few weeks.

Cons: After the first month of ownership the unit began to fail pretty regularly (at least once every two days). I have done extensive troubleshooting and determined the issue is with the unit, most likely it's power regulation. Will be contacting Sans Digital for RMA

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work out of the box manufacture blew me off

Pros: I see no value to to anyone's workload......I would pass.

Cons: I have to say I am very disappointed for a device that is not difficult to engineer with simple features. I contacted Sans Digital and was immediately told it was my card. Call the card controller and hung up before I could inquire with some simple questions. I have made another attempt to contact sands which I have been switched to voice mail. As a manager of 70 websites in the US for a $7 Billion dollar Consumer Electronics Company and New Egg a customer, I expected more. I would have my own IT department look at it but that is not within company polices.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

We guarantee a reply to customers within 24 hours on both email and phone support, and the following Monday by 5pm PST when email came in after the previous Friday 5pm PST.

We apologize for any issue you are having with this unit, please contact us at tech@sansdigital.com or at 1-800-980-1988 for more detail support and we can also suggest controller card that we are familiar and can help you setup the unit with.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but no rebate

Pros: The unit worked out of the box. It is reasonably quiet. In my system is does hot swap.

Cons: You need to removed the casing to actually be able to swap the drives. Getting the middle drives out is still difficult. Could really use some sort of drive puller or ejector. It seems to be picky on which order the drives are populated.

Other Thoughts: I am very good about sending rebates in correctly. I had never missed a rebate that I sent in on time, even got a late one years ago. I bought this last black friday and sent the rebate in less than two weeks later. It is now late April and I have not seen it. Usually people cry about rebates and I do not worry much about it. I figure they are mad because they did not send it in time. I did send on time and included all needed information. Sounds like sans digital is running a scam. I honestly only bought it because of the price after rebate.

I hope there eventually is a class action suit about this.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

Sorry to hear that you have not received your rebate. Please contact us at info@sansdigital.com for rebate status. Please provide the rebate number and contact information so we can check on the status of your rebate.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality

Pros: - Cheap.
- Works as described until it inevitably breaks.

Cons: - Terrible build quality. My drives did not even sit level inside.
- I bought two and both failed within 6 months.
- Bright blue LED on fan, very tacky.
- Cheap power supply inside, will probably damage your drives.
- good luck getting your rebate from this company.

Other Thoughts: AVOID. If you need a cheap esata JBOD unit, get the mediasonic instead.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the issues that you are having with both of your units. Please get in touch with our tech support team directly at 1-800-980-1988 for assistance, or you can email us at tech@sansdigital.com.

For your rebate please contact us at info@sansdigital.com for rebate status. Please provide the rebate number and contact information so we can check on the status of your rebate.

1 out of 5 eggsRuns for a while

Pros: When the power supply runs, it works as advertised.

Cons: As usual, a good product for a year. The power supply has failed after 1 year and 2 months. This coincides with their 1 year warranty. Another case of making a product just good enough to last through the warranty. Where has US integrity gone.

Other Thoughts: At least point us to a place to replace the power supply for reasonable dollars.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

Sorry to hear about the power supply failing, please contact us at tech@sansdigital.com or at 1-800-980-1988 for support on your particular case.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with FreeNAS

Pros: Works with FreeNAS. (I was worried about this - not all SATA port expanders do, but this one is fine so far.)

Easily the least expensive 4-bay JBOD enclosure out there. Compact. Construction is fairly solid. Comes with thumbscrews and eSATA cable.

Also works fine with >2TB drives. (Yay!)

Cons: BRIGHT BLUE LED FAN IN REAR. (Seriously, guys?) Also, cover's a bit tough to get off, and the drives aren't hot-swappable.

Other Thoughts: When you turn it on, only the status light for HDD 1 lights up right away. The rest come on later in the boot process, just after you've wet yourself.

I'd buy another one, but it is spring, the garage is warm again, and the siren song of DIY is calling, so my next JBOD enclosure will probably be a converted toaster oven or something. :-)
