1 out of 5 eggsOverall trash

Pros: For while it worked picked up nicely on Win7 pro, 4 WD Black Drives speed was a little slower then advertised but not a whole lot.

Cons: After about 1 year, different dives would just drop off and the whole box would need to be power cycled. then ports just stopped working even after trying with different HDs all together. Sans Digital support was basically useless after waiting 30+ minutes to speak with a person.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these boxes within 6 months of each other... 1 is completely dead. the other 2 of the 4 bays work. Would not recommend this or would i purchase another one.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: None

Cons: Very bad experience. Drives kept dropping out and freezing my system on both Windows and FreeBSD. I have eliminated my eSATA controller and cables as possible causes. Had to pay a hefty return shipping fee and when I got the unit back it had the same problem. Never again!

Other Thoughts: Would give zero rating if possible. Sent defective item for warranty replacement and got it back in the exact same state. Of course now the warranty has conveniently expired, so I am left with a useless piece of junk and they have my money.

2 out of 5 eggsbuilt to be replaced

Pros: I was running an array of 4 disks for the last 2.5 years without any problems.

Cons: I lost power a couple days ago, and despite being hooked up to a UPS which gracefully shut down the array and its server, the unit will no longer power up. Apparently there is a non-serviceable fuse, so I will have to put the HDDs into my desktop to retrieve my data.

In the future, I will not be buying these built-to-fail-and-replace units. I had a similar Rosewill one previously (whose PSU also failed). Not only is it cheaper to just put HDDs in a standard PC case, but also more reliable. It's simply not worth the space savings to keep a Shuttle and one of these pieces of junk.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid, Get iStarUSA Unit Instead

Pros: Price

Cons: Unreliable.

Other Thoughts: I was using this as JOBD for Linux RAID and found this enclosure very flaky with Ubuntu 12 LTS. Something would glitch and cause MD partitions to be marked as faulty. I ended up replacing the disks and even the new disks had the same issue. After becoming very proficient with forcing RAID rebuilds under Linux due to almost daily failures, I finally replaced the unit with the iStarUSA v7AGE420-ES. Using the same disks and eSATA card, the iStarUSA has been very reliable without a single issue over the last month.

5 out of 5 eggsStorage for Storage

Pros: Simple set up, recognized by computer through eSATAII connection. Reduced space four external HDD to space equivalent of two. which were cluttering my desk space. Replaced four USB connectors with one esata connector.

Cons: Will cost additional money to purchase and esata card with port multiplier capability. Only one of 4 HDD are recognized on the standard (non-multiplier) port.

1 out of 5 eggsWatch out for power outages

Pros: Allows you to easily connect 4 sata drives to your system via eSATA

Cons: Power supply is horrible, it blew out on one of my units after a few months of use. Won't power on at all and non serviceable fuse so it's a throw away at this point.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your purchase of our product.

I am sorry to hear about the failed PSU, it should not have failed so soon, it’s possible there was a defect in this particular PSU.

2 out of 5 eggsVery poor

Pros: Rather cheap solution if compared to NAS devices and other JBODs.

Cons: Have had two of these already and both died right at two year mark. They use terrible power supplied and sell replacements for the cost of a brand new unit. I've lost faith in this brand, definitely not getting a third one.

Other Thoughts: You can usually tell the quality of device by how long the warranty is. If company knows or believes in the quality of their product they will give you better then 1-year warranty.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our Sans Digital product.

I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused, given how long the enclosures have been active, it’s likely overheating may have caused the PSU’s to fail. With any enclosure, it is recommended to routinely rid the enclosure and PSU of dust and store the enclosure in a place with good air flow.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking so far, waiting for rebate

Pros: Reasonably easy to setup. Works fine with the eSata port multiplier on my PC.

Cons: I did own an older Sans Digital storage enclosure that died with a bad power supply. Crossing my fingers on this one.

Other Thoughts: 3 months and counting for the rebate.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Power to 3/4 of the Drives

Pros: The drive is constructed well, it's sturdy. Drives go in and out easily. It worked well when it was working.

Cons: It stopped powering all four slots. Only the first/bottom slot is providing power to a drive.

3 out of 5 eggsSupport replies seriously lacking.

Pros: Ridiculously high grade metal. ie like the old school 2001 Alienware case type. Very well built. Maybe too Well. So it's a con as well. It does find all 4 drives but again a Con. Very fast when it works.

Cons: Face Palm on myself. Port multiplier. Okay Newegg has one for eSata to USB 3.0 but no rating so I bought one else where. Not sure if it's that stick though (5/5 star) or Sans Digital. Neither of them replies to emails. But it has a bad tendency to go into standby and in Windows 7 that causes some hell. Mac has an option to keep the discs spinning but WIndows doesn't :( Also yeah it is plug and play but can cause issues eventually if you switch a disk. Also has issues if you stick the computer in hibernate. The drives don't come back so I have to reboot. And my Dell XPS L702X BIOS doesn't seem to like whatever system the 3.0 converter uses so I have to unplug it while the Dell boot screen is on then quickly insert it after that screen goes out. NewEggFlash didn't make a mention of needing a port multiplier. not sure if the 3.0 version needs one. The con on being well built? uh do you have nails? are they short? It's not coming off then. If they are a bit longer you might break them off. This thing is so tight basically required a professional flat head screwdriver to slowly remove the cover. (so you can put the thumb screws on. Other oddities. The power isn't true Sata. It's powered by Molex power. (4 wires each) Sata is 5 wires. (orange wire is missing) Now not looking inside my old white Vantec (taking it apart) I can't say much about this either but there are many molex to sata converters that convert with 4 wires. My tech knowledge into this design I have no idea what the orange wire does. (blush) And yes seriously what is it with BLUE. I don't mind it. Red, blue and green are good on the eyes in the dark but, ... to look professional one should put in a normal fan. Made of normal plastic. The clear plastic has a bad tendency to crack. Another Con. 4 drives?? uh well if you want to get the drives out don't the other it doesn't seem to like 4 drives in. And won't let me run much if my main drive is in the Disk 1 slot. Now if you don't want to run this as a JBOD but as a good single disk housing thru esata. putting it in Disk 1 seems okay but my Disk errors went from 1 to 9 in that amount of time. and S.M.A.R.T. hates this box. Both GsmartControl (it crashes) and HDD Guardian (it doesn't see the device thus the drives) Hates it. Only Speedfan seems to find most of them. Also a 300gb WD (Blue label) won't work in this thing.

Other Thoughts: Standby is my main issue with this. When it shuts the discs off it takes forever for windows to find the drives again. I got my converter thru datoptic, it's white. Seems well rated but some have reported issues in Windows 7. Without this $32 item I would have returned this unit. With it. I think I can live with the issues but still Molex power? It's powered by 2 Molex connectors so maybe running 4 drives on 2 not a good thing..Depending on if they are high powered drives or Green drives. Also gotta fix that BIOS issue. Might ask Dell about it but the warranty Died on Aug 3rd and I didn't renew because they can't seem to communicate. Always make sure you keep one of the techs emails . I see some of this as a BIOS issue. if Sans Digital has a forum board I'd love to know about it.
