The TowerRAID TR8UT+B is a 8-bay hardware RAID 00/30/50 storage tower that utilizes high performance USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MB/s in performance. The included USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with widely available USB 2.0 ports, which is a convenient feature when both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections are unavailable. With built-in RAID 00, 30, 50 and JBOD, the TR8UT+B provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure and performs all RAID parity calculation to reduce CPU utilization from the host PC. RAID controller cards are unnecessary.

3 out of 5 eggsSo so...

Pros: It works ok.

Cons: Sometimes I will lose some of my drives until I reboot. The card that comes with it is not only junk, but you can't find the driver at all on their website. I thought you could connect 2 esata cables, but there is only one out connection on the back. I am limited to 5 drives maybe because of not plugging in 2 cords... but like clockwork the drives will fall off, i need to either reboot the machine, or my pc for them to show back up.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

The unit is a hardware RAID unit and it should only have 1 eSATA or 1 USB connections. You only need to connect either eSATA or USB to the unit. The bundled controller card is in case customer does not have any eSATA port or USB 3.0 port. It does not need 2 cables to work. Please contact us directly for the issues and we can help to setup the unit properly.

If you are having problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at for e-mail supports.

Thank you.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Unit

Pros: Running with eSata and runs great. Lots of room for hard drives which gives me lots of room for storage. Using Raid 5-0 but will contact Highpoint to see how to get 2 RAID 10 arrays with it.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is my second unit. With the first unit 5 out of the 8 drive trays were stuck behind the metal frame. Second unit was okay and Newegg was awsome with the return. Shipped it next day and without me sending back the defective one first. A1 customer service from Newegg!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGood but a little slow

Pros: I have the eSATA only version running since 2009 with 2 RAID 10 arrays. Easy hot swappable. Great stability. Sufficient power for 8 1TB drives.

Cons: Converting 4 disks to 1 eSATA port defeats the speed of the access for RAID configuration. You will get better video playback on a single local disk. Also, every now and then it would freeze up on me (over a period of 3 years).

This has two internal port multiplyers / main boards. the top one failed on me after 3 years and it was driving me nuts because it looked normal on the RAID card and the lights were green

Other Thoughts: Do not use the included RAID card. I recommend a HighPoint 2314 eSata card. I was able to get 2x RAID 10 Arrays in this enclosure with that card; and Highpoint gave me good support.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly Raid 5-0

Pros: Great storage device. Very sturdy and well built. I have this in Raid 5-0 configuration with 400 gb hd. The data transfer is about 60MB/s in USB 3.0 and 110MB/s in Sata. Very easy to have everything installed and up and running.

Cons: Raid 5-0 and not Raid 5. This means that you have two set of Raid5 that is striped together. You only get 6 hd capacity instead of 7 in an 8 bay system.

Other Thoughts: I didn't realize that the tower was raid 5-0 in the description and a miss on my part. I also own TR5UT+B. If I had known that this is Raid 5-0, I would rather get TR5UT+B based on the point that it has 5 bays and a lower price.
