The MobileSTOR MS4UM+B is a compact JBOD tower utilizing the latest SATA port multiplier and USB 3.0 technology, where one single eSATA cable or USB 3.0 cable connects to four SATA hard drives. Four hard drives can be access to the computer individually, providing instant storage expansion with ease. Designed with easy installation in mind, the trayless MS4UM+B allows instant setup by simply inserting the hard drives after opening the protective ventilating cover. Optional USB 3.0 controller card is available. Port Multiplier technology is widely available in current eSATA port, including home sever, laptop and personal computer, and an optional port multiplier supported eSATA controller can be purchased for added performance and functionality, such as RAID application. MS4UM+B is supported in Windows, Linux and Mac, including storage expansion, home server applications as well as personal data backup. Four hot-swappable hard drives slots are behind the front cover to allow for easy trouble shooting and hard drive replacement. The newly trayless design allows easy installation. With adjustable cooling fan design, and high performance transfer rate to support various audio and video formats, MS4UM+B is the ideal storage tower for high-end computing.

5 out of 5 eggsNicely surprised by the quality of this disk cabinet

Pros: I have used Mediasonic's cabinet in the past. This is better quality, less expensive and it runs very quietly. Kudos...!!! I am building a hadoop cluster as a test/dev platform and this unit with 16TB/node makes for a nice solution. The swappable front bays make for easy access. Unlike th Mediasonic, the front cover stays latched. The Mediasonic is very similar but a pain in the posterior in this respect.

Cons: Nothing that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: Absolutely would recommend.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far it's fast and reliable

Pros: * Took 4x 5TB drives without a hiccup (so no need to worry about the 4TB limit in the specs).
* USB3 connection is reliable and fairly speedy.
* It's super quiet, even with the fans on high.

Cons: * Sliding the drives in can be finicky.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this USB connected to a NUC NUC5PPYH as a low-power file and download server with 4 Toshiba x300 5TB drives. The NUC is running Windows 10 and the storage is set up in a Storage Spaces array with single redundancy (effectively software RAID5).

Speeds cap out around 60 MB per second (so around 480mbps). This is a hard limit in the array, as before I used it on the low-end NUC I connected it to my desktop (i7 4770k) and it hit the same limits. It helped considerably to get consistent speeds on the NUC when I installed PrimoCache and assigned 2GB of RAM as a write buffer on the slower hardware. Part of this speed limit is due to the inefficient storage algorithms used by Storage Spaces, but mostly it appears to be capped by the interface on the device end. For my purposes, the speed is sufficient, but you may want to look at using the eSATA connection if you need more speed, as other reviews indicate it is significantly faster.

As far as reliability, the array has been connected and running 24/7 for over a week now with zero disconnects. Other reviews indicated random disconnects to be an issue, but in my experience so far it has not been a problem. I transferred 7.5TB from my old server to the new one in a single multi-day transfer (via FreeFileSync) with zero issues, and have used the system constantly since with none as well.

At this point with two weeks of use, I would recommend this array. It does what I wanted it to do, and does so reliably.

5 out of 5 eggsI like it.

Pros: Staggered drive spin up. Configurable interface selection. Sleep mode when computer is off.

Cons: Power plug is on the side instead of the back.

Other Thoughts: Using with Linux openSuSE Leap 42.1 and an MSI A88XM GAMING on board sata port (AHCI mode) without any issues.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Storage Device

Pros: Small enough to not be seen tucked beside my media center computer in the den under my TV.

Cheap

Very quiet - (unless all other major appliances are turned off in the house you can't hear this thing and even then it's like a soft whisper)

Extremely fast - (I only watch BluRay movie files, hence, I need a lot of storage and lots of fast Read throughput and this thing has it all)

4 beautiful bays for a lot of storage (which is what I need for a Home Theater PC)

Going on 4 years and not one problem. SOLID performance and I have not done a firmware upgrades and don't plan to. Worked perfectly straight out of the box.

Cons: No Cons

Other Thoughts: I keep seeing so many people give bad reviews on hardware because they just don't understand the technology and it's requirements.

Please read the manufacturers manual BEFORE you purchase and make sure that you understand all the technology and have no questions about it's capabilities or limitations. You will save yourself from waiting weeks for replacements and huge massive headaches from the frustration of support personnel trying to put it delicately that you did something undesirable which is causing all your problems.

Suggestion to all hardware manufacturers. Please give the option to turn off the LEDs. I know it defeats their purpose, but the everyday Joe only need those LEDs for troubleshooting.

5 out of 5 eggsNice !!!

Pros: Inexpensive, functionally great ... good performance, fine ergonomics, and hell .. they even supply a screwdriver. Good and responsive customer support -- kudos.

Cons: None to date.

Other Thoughts: Contacted customer support to get the firmware upgrade -- got a reply in 12 hours, worked like a charm -- . Not recommended to use a USB 3.0 powered extension cable .. found this to be a cause for dropouts of USB3.0

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: Looks good, quiet, easy slide in drive setup

Cons: Figuring the issue was with Windows 8.1 I started communicating with Microsoft's USB team and upon, preforming USB trace logs. Microsoft determined this enclosure is the point of failure. Not my computers hardware or, firmware. Again it is the MS4UM+B's firmware/chip set that is the point of failure.

Considering Microsoft is known to blame your computer I found this astounding. A vendors product was blamed for not properly supporting USB standards.

Other Thoughts: High price for bad technology - Sans Digital should include a EASTA raid controller instead of the USB 3.0 seeing as the firmware/chip set being used is known not to work correctly.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsEdit of previous review

Pros: Nice design, compact, quiet, 4 tb hdd support

Cons: Disconnects constantly with USB 3.0 connection. Read up on the Jmicron chip problem with these devices. I really want to like this device, but my setup wouldn't allow transfers with any of the three different brands or sizes of hdd that I tried with this enclosure.

Other Thoughts: Esata may work excellently, no idea since my mobo doesn't support port multiplying.

I must say customer support is awesome with this company.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

We have not aware there is any issues with USB 3.0 working with different hard drives. At the same time, there is firmware update for the USB 3.0 to eliminate the problem with disconnect and reconnect. We also recommend connect to a USB hub to check if there is any issues with the onboard USB 3.0 port. Some of the motherboard manufacture creates the USB 3.0 port out of USB 3.0 specification and hence, generating issues.

If you are having problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for e-mail supports.

5 out of 5 eggs compact, supports 4tb drives, quiet

Pros: Solid construction
compact
quiet
acceptable connection speeds as noted by other reviews (usb 3.0 tested)
accepts 4 tb drives
SYNC feature (allows hibernation for efficiency)
unobtrusive front LED lights (blue-small)
straight-forward front mounted buttons and indicators for HDD activity, fan speed, power saving
easily replaceable rear mounted fan.

Cons: unique power connector, may be difficult to replace
chintzy plastic front bay door (everything else appears to be steel)

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a 4 tb, 2tb and 2 1tb drives (formatted ext4) as I didnt want to lose HDD space with the similar RAID enclosure from this manufacturer, and let rsync do the backup work for me. I was very surprised at how truly small this enclosure is. Really nice to get rid of all my external enclosures and their separate power supplies and place everything in this box for easy accessibility. Simple installation: attach the handles, place in the slots, plug in the enclosure and boot my computer, showed up as JBOD should with unique drives (mounted with ubuntu).

Provides nice options for expandability in the future if I wish to buy more 4tb drives to replace the HDDs. What sold me on this enclosure was the power saving feature, I hate the idea of a device being on when not in use, even though multiple power cycling can be hard on drives.

I will update after the device has been used more.

2 out of 5 eggsNeed additional pci controller?

Pros: Works but slow with usb 3

Cons: Only one drive recognized with sata cable

Other Thoughts: Will try it with matched drives and a better sata controller.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

eSATA connection will require to use eSATA port multiplier in order to see all 4 drives. Please make sure the on-board eSATA port support port multiplier. If onboard eSATA port is not supported port multiplier, please see below link for the eSATA controller selection.

USB 3.0 provide about 150MB/s performance.
