4 out of 5 eggsBudget quad-interface enclosure w/ 4TB drive support

Pros: Flexible connections: eSATA, USB3, USB2, FW800, FW400 (basically everything except Thunderbolt)
Supports 4TB drives
Affordable compared to other enclosures
Metal chassis

Cons: Minimal construction, no shock-absorbing features
Firewire 800 write speed somewhat slow

Other Thoughts: I bought this as an interim solution - I needed to use a 4TB drive on a Macbook Pro whose fastest interface is FW800. There's nothing that does FW800 and Thunderbolt, so I figured that this would be the next best thing, possibly using it via eSATA (or USB3) later on.

The unit is very similar to the OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosure. It is cheaper and you can see why: while the Sans Digital packaging is slick, the aluminum used is thinner, and there's no shock-absorption. (The OWC uses rubber grommets on the screws that mount the drive.) That said, the alignment for the drive-mounting screws was good and the drive sits securely in. There is no stand to mount the unit upright.

If you seek a tool-less design, this isn't for you. There's nothing particularly cumbersome, it's just 4 small screws for the chassis and 4 for the drive.

There's no activity light up front, it's on top of the unit. If you really peer in you'd probably be able to see the blue gloom since all those LEDs are so bright anyway :)

This is a fanless enclosure, which you can see as a pro or a con… It's completely silent and the metal chassis is meant to dissipate the heat, but a fan definitely doesn't shorten the life of a drive...

The chipset comprises LSI FW843 for firewire, Asmedia ASM1042 for USB3 (I think, the last 2 digits were marred), and JMicron JMB355. I'm no expert on host adapter circuits, but the latter is a bit odd since it appears to support only SATA II. The enclosure specs clearly state SATA-6G is supported.

I tested the unit with a Seagate ST4000VN000 4TB NAS drive, on a Macbook Pro. Unlike older enclosures, the full 4TB capacity was immediately accessible. FW800 read speed are good, close to the theoretical maximum of the interface - 76MB/s. Write speed left something to be desired at 56MB/s. I haven't tested other interfaces yet.

I ran a clone job for 14 hours continuously and everything looked good.

1 out of 5 eggsNO power saver and No rebate

Pros: Aluminum case

Cons: It has no function of auto power off or save, so, a hard drive incessant spins even though it is not used, and a computer is turned off. I purchased it from Newegg only because I think it is cheap if I could get a rebate. It's been ten (10) weeks since I sent rebate form. This company, however, has not sent the rebate. Unconscionable company. I never recommend this company's product.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Sans Digital products.

I have consulted with our engineers about the spin down issue. It seems like it's only happening on the Mac. Are you uisng Mac? Also, we had also came up with a new firmware to get the spin down to work when connected through USB. If you had not contacted our tech support, please do so to get your problem resolved. Unfortunately, we still have not come up with any resolution if you are connecting the unit with Firewire. However, we are going to have a newer of this model soon with spin down feature and more.

About the rebate, please kindly contact info@sansdigital.com for help. We are more than happy to help you out.

Please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital.com for email support

4 out of 5 eggsReasonable quality throughout.

Pros: Good quality metal work, fasteners, and circuit board. Longer than most competitors because of a larger circuit board to accommodate the 3 output types. Small case screws are slightly magnetic assisting in removal. Extra drive and case screws included. Never seen that before. Nice for those of us with clumsy fingers and poor eyesight. Best thing about the third-party external enclosures is the on/off switch so drive doesn't start every time you turn on your computer.

Cons: USB cable is 39" end to end. That is barely enough to go from desk to tower on floor. Thank goodness for power supplies on the bottom of the computer. Rubber feet are meant to cover the case screws. Bad idea. No vertical stand, but I solved that with a stand from an enclosure whose circuit board went bad.

Other Thoughts: Note, Firewire 800 on this product is compatible with 1394a as stated in description but you need to supply the 1394b to 1394a cable yourself because this product comes with a Firewire 800 to 800 cord and the connectors are not compatible. If the outside of the enclosure gets warm, that is a good thing. That means there is thermal transfer from drive to the case where it will dissipate, i.e., the case is acting as a heatsink. Hope I get my rebate. Too expensive otherwise.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: FW800 in addition to USB3 and eSATA
Small footprint
Compact, sideways bulk power brick doesn't block ports on a power strip

Cons: Power brick is not built into case
included bumper feet would cover screws

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an ICY Dock that got its powersupply damaged by water. FW800 until I can upgrade to a USB3 Macintosh is awesome.
