Supporting up to 16 SATA II and SATA I hard drives, the Highpoint RocketRAID 2340 PCI Express controller card is perfect for entry-level storage servers. Supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and 50, the RocketRAID 2340 can both backup data and also extend the storage capacity of a system up to 2TB's! Featuring a PCI-Express x8 with x16 compatibility it's one of the first PCIe controller cards available.
Providing S.M.A.R.T drive monitoring for status and reliability, hot swap and hot spare drive storage, support for 4 mini SAS connectors, and web based RAID software, the 2340 is perfect for small to medium size business IT environments.
Another feature essential in IT environments allows the RocketRAID card to automatically rebuild the RAID array if a drive fails. Last but not least, the 2340 supports a variety of operating systems including the following: Windows (XP, 2000, Server 2003), Windows x64bit, Mac OS X, Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, and Fedora Linux open source driver.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Cheap. Works well using RAID 5 as a server for a HTPC.
Cons: The cables that come with the card are 1 meter long! That's fine for external use, but a mess inside even a large case. 1/2 meter mini-sas can be found elsewhere, but 4 will cost about $100.
Other Thoughts: Hard Drives have gotten cheap. Start creating RAID 5 arrays with 16 drives and it becomes apparent that poor quality comes with cheap prices.

Pros: Ability to have up to 16 drives is just priceless, this is a very flexible RAID card that has allowed me to mix multiple RAIDs 1/5 and even 10 without any performance issues.
As everyone has mentioned the cables are long so be sure you have a case that has plenty of space.
Cons: The bootscreen is a little slow and annoying, but you really wont see it much on a server unless its crashing. Also would wish for a better RAID management console application to monitor temperature and other features.
Other Thoughts: Worth every penny so far, glad i made this purchase and hopefully it will last a long time.

Hardware raid is dead.

Pros: This card is very nice. I wish there were more jbod cards like this around. It's got 16 sata ports and the cables are very nice. I used this in conjunction with N82E16811219021 and i'm very happy. I wouldn't even use the raid features, as ZFS handles raid much better than this card could ever hope to. This card is PERFECT for ZFS, though you have to run it in Freebsd, as i do not think there is any solaris support for this card yet.
Cons: No solaris support. That's really the only con. Some people would say that it's a con that it isn't a hardware raid card but this is not a con. Hardware raid is nothing more than software raid on dedicated hardware, the truth is that these days, cpu speed + cheap ram has done away with the need for hardware raid. Just look at the success of the sun x4500. It uses cheap slow disks and puts up numbers better than most hardware raid solutions and it's just software raid.
Other Thoughts: ZFS all the way. If you don't know about it, look it up.

Great card for the money, leaves a bit to be desired

Pros: Price for a 16 port card is great! The alternatives are touted as superior but their price point is not realistic for most home raid users.
I've never experienced any of the headaches I've read other RAID users as having, such as dropped drives. Once configured, my raid arrays have worked like a charm. I've got more concern about the energy I'm using with 16 drives attached then I do about my data's security and consistency.
Cons: Support has not been helpful whatsoever the two times I needed assistance. I've sent a total of 6 emails to their general support email address, to which I've received ZERO responses.
Unlike other raid controllers I've used, i found no successful way of rebuilding an array without booting into the OS and running their software (which always comes back with odd errors on one of the ports in both Vista 64 and XP 64). Having the ability to rebuild and initialize via the card's bios utility would be nice.
I also think the cables are quite long. Obviously it's usually better to have a bit too much cable rather then too little so I can't really fault Highpoint for this, but as the other reviewer stated, these cables are just far too expensive at the moment if you want to replace them, so having multiple lengths out of the box would be nice.
Other Thoughts: Drives: (3) Raid5 arrays of (5) 750GB Seagate 7200.10 drives Controller: HighPoint RocketRAID 2340 Mobo: MSI Diamond P6N OS: Windows Vista x64 & Windows XP 64
