Don't buy if you have an NVIDIA chipset
- Pros: Cheap external RAID solution
- Cons: On the majority of my systems the card doesn't work. It doesn't even detect.
- Other Thoughts: 0ther reviews mentioned an incompatibility with Gigabyte boards. I own no Gigabyte boards, but I do have 3 Asus boards, 1 DFI board, and 1 Intel board with PCI-E slots. I tried the card on everything I had to isolate the issue and to determine if the card was bad or if something else caused the issue. The Asus and DFI are AMD NVidia based. After my tests I am willing to bet that those Gigabyte boards other reviewers mentioned also have NVidia chipsets. The card only detects on the Intel board even after applying the latest firmware. On all of my other boards it doesn't even show up in Device Manager or give a RAID BIOS to indicate that it is registered in any way. So if you have AMD stuff.. watch out.
HighPoint is MIA
- Pros: Inexpensive software-based RAID card that supports port multiplier (PM) devices (upto 5 drives per port).
- Cons: Sortware based RAID cards don't have the best performance.
Biggest Con: HighPoint's support is completely nonexistent. And when I say "completely", I mean absolutely no response at all.
- Other Thoughts: Card installed on VISTA (64-bit), 5x1TB arrays in RAID 5. Installed without any real issues, but tried to contact HighPoint to inquire about a few oddities (card not always detected upon bootup and slower-than-expect write performance to the array (~35Mbps)) -- even a software RAID cad (which this card is) should perform better than this.
Anywho, HighPoint's response is... well, to not respond at all. No response to date. 3 phone calls w/ messages left -- no response. 5 - FIVE - emails w/ no response.
Pathetic.
HighPoint employees, you might want to start updating your resumes as this isn't how a company stays in business. Ignoring your customers in this Internet era WILL bring about your downfall.
Roccetraid 2304
- Pros: None
- Cons: The card was either DOA or not recognized by my system. I tried to contact tech support via phone and email without a response. I'll never deal with this company again.
- Other Thoughts: All the documentation I read on their website was promising but the end result was poor customer/technical support.
