Why mince words when describing Highpoint's RocketRAID 620? You'll be hard pressed to find a better RAID card on the market. It features a long list of technologies designed to protect the information on the arrayed hard drives. Just as impressive is the expansive ways it'll go to warn you should something go wrong on your hard drives beyond its control, giving you a chance to save the drive, or replace the drive and keep downtime to a minimum.

Most importantly, it makes replacement of a corrupt or damaged drive easy – just change out the drive. RocketRaid will do the rest of the work for you. For peace of mind there is nothing like RocketRaid out there.

5 out of 5 eggsHow to Get Best Results With This Card

Pros: Boosts SSD Seq. Read speed up to around 380MB/s - 400MB/s on SATA II motherboards.

Adds two extra SATA ports at low cost.

Cons: Instructions can be confusing for newbies.

Marvell controller works well but may have issues with some motherboards which already have Marvell controllers built-in.

Other Thoughts: Use it for your Boot Drive:
Install the card before attaching any drives to it. Remove AC power cord. Physically plug in the card.

Reattach AC power cord. Boot up computer. Allow Windows to install generic drivers. Restart the computer to complete driver install. Shutdown computer. Remove power cord. Gently but firmly connect your boot drive with a SATA cable.

Reattach AC power cord. Press computer's Power ON button and enter the systam BIOS immediately (usually by tapping either F2 key or DEL key on your keyboard).

In the BIOS setup screen locate the settings for BOOT. In BOOT options locate the "1st boot device" setting and select the RocketRaid 620 card as 1st Boot Device (or select your actual boot drive if the RocketRaid is not shown).

If you forget to make this selection in the BIOS your system will not boot up, and the Windows master boot record (MBR) may be corrupted thus preventing it from booting even if you plug it back into the motherboard. This is not a flaw in the card design, it is a function of Windows so don't blame the card. You MUST select the card / boot drive as your 1st Boot Device!

You can use the supplied Marvell drivers, but many users find Windows generic drivers work perfectly well.

Now, if your PCI-e version is 2.0 (not the older slower 1.0) then a fast SSD should achieve around 380MB/s - 400MB/s peak Sequential Read speed. This is a useful increase over typical SATA II motherboard speed of around 280MB/s. Sequential Write speed will be slower. Also, Random IOPs will be faster.

5 out of 5 eggsLong lasting Rocket Raid

Pros: Solid low level raid 0 device works well with no issues on large regular hard drives. It sees all large hard drives without the need for an EFI bios. No need for a smaller first partition. My youngest one going well for 3 years. I like the loud noise if a cable becomes unattached and that you don't have to go thru hoops like with an Intel Controller to recover from the unattached cable.

Cons: Performance not suitable for SSD arrays.

Other Thoughts: Bought my second one 3 years ago ( March 2012 ). Attached two 2TB drives and it works well giving speed of 250 in raid 0. no issues. Both of them are still in service as are the original hard drives attached. I like that Windows now sees the raid controller so often no drivers are needed.

1 out of 5 eggsFalse Advertisement

Pros: none.

Cons: Everything about it is a con. Prominently, the fact that this card is NOT compatible with Windows 7 (x64), despite their claims. Windows 7 (x64) REQUIRES signed drivers and there is no work-around for that; this product ships with unsigned drivers.

Support is lack-luster, with no offered phone support and e-mail is a sham.

1 out of 5 eggsUnusable

Pros: May work fine in a different setting

Cons: Was told by HighPoint RocketRAID tech support over the phone before I bought it that it WOULD add it's 2 STA ports to the BIOS's list of available drive that I can boot to. This is now proven to be incorrect.

Other Thoughts: Must return it now.

Pros: This card is as everyone says. A piece of sh*#1. I tried all the workarounds that so many others have posted for this product, and it still would not allow my Windows 7 Pro OS to be the first drive to boot up. There is nothing good about this product. I tried to reflash the firmware as described. It errored out and now the entire PCI card can't recognize the 2 HDDs I have connected to it. Dead. Dead. Dead. Waste of $40.

Cons: I could not boot up in Windows 7 Pro initially bc the card always took over, even when I removed the logical drive as a bootable disk in my mobo BIOS. I did all the steps to flash to a bootable USB FreeDos. I ran the load command too. Disabled INT13 to not boot off of the RAID. Flash. Then Error! Wow. I have never seen a product fail so miserably from the start. It literally does not work at all. True junk.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this product. HighPointe will never be a company whose product I will even consider again in the future.

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: 2 SATA ports w/ RAID 0 / 1

Cons: PCI-E 1x 2.0

Other Thoughts: Taken from the Wikipedia page on PCI Express:

PCI-Express 2.0 [at 1x] 500 MB/s

So then, an SSD will saturate a SATA 6G connection. If you're putting 2 on this card, which is what I was planning, you'll saturate the PCI-E slot before you ever hit peak speed on either drive.

There is no fix for this, as it is a limitation of the bus itself.

With that said, 2 egg's, because if you aren't using SSD's, this limit likely doesn't apply to you, and the card works fine otherwise.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, cheap PCIe 1x RAID card

Pros: If you're looking for a great, cheap PCIe 1x card to do RAID0 or RAID1 this is the one to choose. It's from HighPoint so there's a WebGUI utility for Windows that lets you monitor the card and check the status of drives and the integrity of the RAID. Find me another card in this price range that does that. Good luck with that.

Has a Staggered Spin-Up option other cards in this price range do not. All in all and excellent value.

Cons: The onboard BIOS takes a while to run through it's self-diagnostic and drive scan / spin-up, etc. Not a huge con, but it will delay overall boot up by a bit.

The RocketRAID BIOS set up & config is not hugely self intuitive. Granted I re-used HDD's from another RAID card, but it took me a few minutes to figure out how to erase the old "config" off those drives so the RocketRAID 620 could work with them.

The HighPoint Technologies web site is a little tricky to search and find RocketRAID updates, but not impossible.

Other Thoughts: As always, check the manufacturers web site for the latest updates (e.g., drivers, BIOS, etc.). Most of the previous detractors were probably running the original v1.0 BIOS on their card which was known to have issues. Updating to v1.1 should erase those issues.

This card is based on the Marvell 88SE9128 chipset, so there may be issues if you have another Marvell based controller in your system already. Be advised!

Bear in mind this is a PCIe 1x card, so you're unlikely to achieve true SATA III 6Gbps throughput ... ever!

Despite what others have said there are drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2 & even 2012 now.

This is an excellent inexpensive RAID1 solution for an aging Dell PowerEdge server. I installed one in a PowerEdge SC440 with 2 Seagate ST250DM000's under Win2K8R2 and it ran great. Probably not as fast as the original PERC 4/i that came in there, but that died so I had to make adjustments. And this allowed me to keep the server humming along as a secondary server for Windows AD / DC.

1 out of 5 eggsYou have GOT to be kidding me....

Pros: There aren't any after the other review I just read.

Cons: I just read a review about "compatible drive listing"... Looks like I'll be returning this "Piece-Of-Dung" the same day it arrives. My twin Kingston SSD's aren't even listed as compatible. I'm tired of this manufacturer screw-over. I'm going to see what Kingston recommends before I waste MORE money and time.

Other Thoughts: GO HERE FIRST!!

If your drives or mobo aren't BOTH LISTED as compatible, DON'T waste your time or money!!!

The will have a RMA the second it arrives.
NOT HAPPY at NEWEGG right now. This information should have been FLAGGED to check out FIRST before order.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks on Ubuntu great

Pros: the only reason i bought this was it said it is linux supported , works on Ubuntu great. i am not booting off of it. i dont know why you would anyway, with ssd's at an affordable price now, put your OS there and use the raid for mass storage

Cons: i had to learn how to build a driver. but with the amazing support of the Ubuntu community it was a breeze

Other Thoughts: should have spent an extra few bucks and got the one that had 4 connectors
