1 out of 5 eggsCurropted all my data within 2 weeks

Pros: Decent web interface

Cons: Fakeraid (CPU assisted) and corrupted all my data. I had 4 brand new disks in a RAID 5.

Other Thoughts: Avoid like the plague

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent value & compatibility

Pros: price for features
boots JBOD / single drive without any onboard BIOS configuration
easy firmware updating in Windows
small size

Cons: price for size / complexity of card
port #1 is in the furthest away / most hidden spot once card is installed

Other Thoughts: This product works excellent for adding into a functioning system as a temporary bootable SATA/SAS card to add drivers for other controller modes. My classic use for this is setting up the 2640X4 card, swapping the boot drive over to this card and changing an Intel SATA controller from AHCI into RAID mode for either coexisting an SSD with a RAID array or converting to an SRT mirror. Once the reconfiguration of the image's controller drivers is done while booting on this card, I can remove this card and boot with the drive on the original controller in whatever mode is required.

The Promise cards I have which I used to use for this purpose frequently will hang the system at boot when coexisting with Intel controllers in RAID mode (but not in AHCI mode) with all existing firmware versions. The 2640X4's stock 1.3 firmware worked perfectly, but firmware can easily be updated (1.4 at the time of this review) within Windows as well .

5 out of 5 eggsNice Product

Pros: awesome product, speeds up connection, only limit is your WIFI

Cons: limited to the speed of your WIFI..

(maybe a pro or con)-> Pulls all the Bandwidth from everyone else to you--slows them down

also would be great if i could actually use the product-- New MOBO puts PCI-e slot between 2 SLI- GPU's--does not fit between then

Other Thoughts: definitely makes internet better using a PCI slot then a USB slot

1 out of 5 eggsCurrent Linux/Windows Users: Seek Comfort Elsewhere!

Pros: Doesn't fuss with setting up RAID at the card's BIOS level. 4 channels of RAID and 4 ports; not a losing game of negotiating more ports than there are channels.

Cons: Drivers are dead ended.
Installation of drivers for Linux still require a floppy drive; anyone lacking prior Linux and command line experience will be hard pressed to parlay this into using a USB drive.

Other Thoughts: I find it curious that Linux can't see the RAID array without the drivers. Especially given that it is a Marvell chipset, and Linux can see my motherboard's on-board array also chipped by Marvell. I'm guessing it's a pre-AHCI design.

If you're still running Windows Vista and older, or Linux from 2011 and older, you should -technically- be fine. But, if you're even reasonably current, there's nothing to see here; move along.

Proof, for those wise enough to wonder:

4 out of 5 eggsGood card with a few bugs

Pros: Excellent raid card, have 4 7200 RPM 1tb drives (Samsung F3) in raid 5 as a data drive and it has been handeling them well for 2+ years

Cons: Only issue i have had was that the controler keeps reporting smart test failed in the events log, but the status page shows SMART test is nominal and the hard drives themselves agree. Not a major issue, just tends to fill the log and as far as i can tell, no one else has had a similar issue.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrecting prior bad review

Pros: I mistakenly gave this item a 1-egg review below and I am adding another positive review to correct the "egg average" for this product due to my first low review. All in all, I think it is a 4-egg product, so this second 5-egg review should almost balance the scales. Too bad one cannot revise an existing review on Newegg.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrecting prior bad review

Pros: I gave this card a negative review recently because I thought it was causing my computer to hang. After much additional troubleshooting, I discovered that there was a problem with one of the hard drives. My bad, so I'm giving the product 5 eggs to counter-balance the other review.

Cons: The Marvell controller on this card causes a significant delay in boot-up time. I own another SATA add-on card with a Silicon Image controller that detects the 4 drives and goes through the BIOS screen much faster.

Other Thoughts: I only use this card for JBOD functionality (i.e., extra SATA ports only -- no RAID), so I cannot comment on its virtues in managing a RAID array.

1 out of 5 eggsCard does not play well with ASUS Maximus V EXTREME Z77 Motherboard

Pros: This card works on an Intel D875XBX2 motherboard that I own.

Cons: On my new motherboard, an ASUS Maximus V EXTREME, I cannot populate more than two of the four ports on this card without causing the computer on hang on the Windows 7 start-up screen. Highpoint tech support has tried to be helpful but none of their troubleshooting suggestions have worked. A one-year warranty isn't much good in this kind of circumstance.

Other Thoughts: Hard to give this card more than one egg when it won't work on a brand new, fully functional motherboard (even it if worked in a different build.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat for old OS versions

Pros: Not too expensive

Cons: Doesn't support moden versions of OSes out of the box. The last version of Ubuntu support with pre-built drivers is 11.04. I built drivers for Ubuntu Server 12.10 using their open source code in a VM, but the module still wouldn't load into the kernel. Once you get it installed, you will have to search Google to figure out how to enable automatic driver upgrades via DKMS.

Other vendor cards are effortless (Adaptec, 3Ware, LSI Raid). This is a great card if yo don't value your time.
