5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: Update:
Initially setup 7 x 4tb Seagate ST4000DM000 / STBD4000400 on RAID 6 over a year ago. It took about 12 hours to build the array. I had about 18.2tb usable, and getting about 700MB/s read and 698MB/s writes (sequential).

I just expanded the array with another 4tb drive (same Seagate brand to have 8 x 4tb hard drives). Now getting over 800MB/s sequential read and write speeds.

Cons: I heard many mixed reviews and was a bit worried before I bought the drives. Thankfully everything is working fine.

Expansion took about 3 days. This is one of the drawbacks of not getting a FULLY dedicated RAID card (this card apparently uses a hybrid approach), but I knew what I was getting into since you can't beat the price and don't really need fast rebuild speeds.

Other Thoughts: I'm also using Intel RAID0 (for my crucial SSDs) as my boot drive. I've heard many people having issues with this. It took me a few minutes to google the solution: flash the RAID BIOS, and disable two features: "Reallocate EBDA" and "INT13".

1 out of 5 eggsOnly recommendable for very basic usage

Pros: Good price for a RAID card. Works well with JBOD drives.

Cons: Stuttering when playing recorded TV from a RAID-5. (2-10 times in a 1hr TV show)

This happened with RAID drives (6x 4TB Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168).

The very disappointing answers from Highpoint Tech Support:
"The frame dropped issue is a known issue in RAID5. Currently we don't have a quick solution."

"Dear customer the statement is true for all RAID 5 controllers including non HighPoint RAID controllers. The RocketRAID 2720 is a SW RAID controller.

"What we recommend is the RocketRAID 4520 or 4522 series controller, this is a HW RAID controller. "

"Dear customer,
The RAID 5 issue you reported also occurs in other manufacturers controllers.
We do not offer trade up or trade back for products."

"Dear customer since there are no other options we will close this support ticket."

Other Thoughts: I tried this card initially with typical desktop drives I owned already. RAID-5 repeatedly dropped (which is somewhat expected and not the reason for my rating).
.
So I then purchased (expensive) RAID drives. These did not drop out any more.
However, I was having strange stuttering issues with playing recorded TV from the RAID-5.

The answer from Highpoint in my opinion speaks for itself.

I do not know if the statement they made is indeed true for all software RAID cards - but if the Highpoint 2720 can not even play video from a RAID-5 without stuttering, they should not sell the card as RAID-5 capable.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well if kept RAID setup simple.

Pros: If you keep your RAID setup super simple it will work great without issues. i.e. have all drives in one RAID array, use the max space on all drives, and set defaults sector sizes.

Cons: Do not have RAID 5 and RAID 6 array on the same drives! Had 1 drive failure, I swapped in a new harddrive, and the RAID 5 array rebuilt properly. But RAID 6 array disspeared, I had to contact the email only support to get RAID 6 array back online, and it was not a simple process for me, i.e. I has OS boot drive on the RAID 5, data on the RAID 6.

1 out of 5 eggsNightmare of a card

Pros: Price - This is a low cost card to support 8 drives. Not worth the savings. Move on and buy a better card and save yourself headaches down the road.

Cons: Have had nothing but issues with this card going offline with and registering the following error in the Event Viewer on Window Server 2008 R2. The device, \Device\Scsi\272x_1x1, did not respond within the timeout period. I have opened tickets with Highpoint support for them to tell me they dont know what is wrong and they are trying to duplicate the issue. Then they close my case. I keep opening tickets and they will not RMA the card and it is about 9 months old and they dont have a solution. This is unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: I am having the same issue as another reviewer below where you must reboot the server to get the card to respond. The raid array just goes offline and I am running VM's on the raid. The server becomes unresponsive and you cannot remotely soft reboot the server. I have to manually push the power button. This product is junk and from what I have read, you should avoid Highpoint products at all costs.

1 out of 5 eggsJust plain awful.

Pros: It worked for a little while.

Cons: Support is terrible. Doesn't work well with Windows Server 2012. Used it in JBOD and about a month ago it messed up all of my drives somehow. Spent about a week trying to recover the data but it was completely unrecoverable.

Other Thoughts: $160 paperweight.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Inexpensive, not hard to use the included software.

Cons: First card had a port DOA, NewEgg replaced it promptly.
In about eight weeks of operation, the card has gone offline twice forcing the VM's running on those drives offline. Rebooting host is the only way to recover the card.

Other Thoughts: No good reason for a card to just drop offline completely and require a reboot. Not a heat issue or overloading the card issue. Just beware and plan for what happens when the card goes down unexpectedly.

5 out of 5 eggsCard works very well for its price

Pros: I installed this card into an Intel server board running Windows Server 2012. The card is controlling a 6-drive WD 3TB Red RAID 5. The card was immediately recognized by the system and after getting the drivers and software installed, I built the Array which works great.

Cons: You get what you pay for; if I had a budget that allowed for a high end LSI card I would have went with one of those just for the higher quality chips. I also wish that the card had an integrated battery backup.

Other Thoughts: The card has two mini SAS connectors, more than others in its price point, the build quality is quite good, and for my particular hardware setup, its been a pretty turn-key solution which has been working great.
