1 out of 5 eggsNot a good experience.

Pros: Easy to install in MacPro running Lion 10.7.4 attached to a mirrored 2x2 gb hardware RAID enclosure. Browser management good with access to log file.

Used for backup of small 5 to 10 gb batches once a week. Then tried a 60 gb backup and the pros became cons.

Cons: First MacPro hardware crash curtain of death resulted in unable to recognize hard drive. Could access drive with USB 2 cable but not USB 3. Reinstalling driver resolved issue.

Second curtain of death crash resulted in blowing the top port completely for USB 3 use. Will not recognize any USB 3 device.
The card has 4 ports, so moved the USB 3 cable down a couple of ports.

Now, crashes regularly about every other backup, of any size, but has not completely blown any more ports.

Recently, I found a review that said the card is not compatible with Lion 10.7.5, but I cannot find any mention of that on the HighPoint website.

I did install Lion 10.7.5 at some point after installing the card. Although I have the HighPoint log file, I can't match the increased crashing with the Lion upgrade.

The card is now unusable.

Other Thoughts: The RMA process is too onerous, covering repair only. The customer pays all shipping, it takes a week to obtain the RMA and 3 weeks to process the repair after they get it. By the time I pay all the shipping and lose the use of the card for a month, it isn't worth it. I'm sure that's what HighPoint wants.

I will never buy another HipPoint product and never recommend a HighPoint product to anyone else.

2 out of 5 eggsunstable but faster (?!?)

Pros: After installing this card for an external RAID enclosure backup drive, I saw great speed improvements over the prior USB2 connection. The Apple MacPro running 10.7.4 with 16GB RAM was running well.

Cons: The errors have been infrequent but that only makes it harder to identify and resolve. I started by having issues restoring data from the RAID on the USB3 card. I also saw intermittent errors in the system.log file. I updated the driver from to 1.0.3 and the issue seemed to subside. A week later I again noticed that I was getting USB errors in the system.log and the machine was now crashing. After struggling to get the server to boot last evening, I unplugged the RAID from the HighPoint card and was able to boot. When connect the RAID now it fails to show up. In the System Profiler it shows no driver loaded and the web interface for the card fails to load.

3 out of 5 eggsHighPoint RocketU 1144AM

Pros: Installed somewhat effortlessly. When finally configured, worked as described. Drives stay on continuously and do not power off for power saving so it works well when you cannot afford to have external drives go to sleep.

Cons: Stopped working after two weeks. Attempted to reboot, restart drivers, etc.... to no avail. Simply does not recognize drives any longer and mgmt interface unable to connect to device. Attempted to get tech support, but this appears to be non-existent. Even links on documentation no longer work. Found them online via google, but there is no tech support number where you can talk to someone it seems.

Other Thoughts: Most cards I have worked with are straight forward, this card seems a little flaky. Drives did not work initially - Mgmt interface found them, but indicated they were not active?? Worked after power cycling external drive, but this should not have been necessary. Hope this is a one-off as the card appeared to work great initially.
