Pros: Seems to work fine. No drives have failed B"H, so I don't know if it will alert me to a failure.

Running on Windows 8.1

Cons: Boots are slow.

Pros: Second HighPoint controller with no issues. Paired with four WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower in RAID 5.

Cons: Software RAID.

Pros: Priced well. Offers various RAID configs.

Cons: Tech support is awful - even insulting. Response times for basic questions is very slow up to 30Hrs. It took me a week and help from other sources to realize that their product marketing was very misleading - and that I had purchased the wrong product.

Other Thoughts: External RAID enclosures are a much more simple solution.

Pros: Load command set gives this raid card the edge for me.

Cons: don't like the sata connection layout

Other Thoughts: another reviewer here at Newegg, David C. has made this card the perfect raid card for my system, as it is being used as a secondary raid-10 support unit. The load command that he indicated, will eliminate the bios load of the card, which works perfect for my hardware setup and speeds up loading of the overall system.

Pros: Worked with my server setup as a RAID 5 data storage, I did not have this setup to boot from. Got decent speeds, too! Typically 100-125MB/sec transfers with 4 4TB Western Digital Green drives. I was happy.

Cons: Computer started to randomly reboot after 3 weeks of flawless operation. I then noticed that on occasion the server would reboot. Narrowed it down to every time the RAID array was accessed heavily, it would BSOD (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_TO for RR640L.SYS). And going into the RAID monitoring software, I can re-create the issue every time. I powered the system off, and turned it back on, and when it came time for the 640L to initialize and bring up the BIOS screen, all I got was 1 green square, and an N with a squiggly line over it, and the computer hung. I hit reset, same result. Hit reset a third time, then card initialized, and I continued to boot. I then contacted tech support for Highpoint. Immediately I was told that my hard drives were the problem and they could not help me. Uhh, ok. 1st, if the hard drives were a problem, then why did it work PERFECTLY for 3 weeks? And second, I removed all the SATA cables from the card and am able to replicate the lock computer upon BIOS initialization not only with my original computer, but a 2nd as well! They still refuse to listen and understand, and will not RMA the card. And since it's now over 30 days (I did not start using the card right away after ordering, I had to wait for time to rebuild my server), I cannot return it to Newegg. My advice? BUY ADAPTEC or SOMEONE ELSE, NOT HIGHPOINT.

Other Thoughts: I had a HighPoint RocketRaid 2224 card running in my current server for 3-4 years with 4 1TB Green drives attached to it, and NEVER had any issues. Figured the HP RR640L would provide me with the same service. No. I'm terribly disappointed in myself for not trusting the other people on here that stated the HighPoint Tech Support is terrible. They weren't kidding.

Pros: hardware assisted raid card, so basically its a bit better than your software raid but not as sweet as a hardware raid. (keep in mind that i'm not aware of ANY hardware raids at this level of money. So its nonsense to be negative towards this not being a hardware raid.

Comes with cables, though i think they are a bit long & small form bracket.

Installs very easy (driver & webgui) and the performance is very good. Specially if your lacking ports on your mobo.

Cons: Because by default the Raid Bios card kicks off, this can cause problems with people getting clean boots into their OS.
Highpoint should make it a little easier to turn this off (see other for details)

The only MAIN complaint i have, this card is a PCIe 2.0 x4 hardware HOWEVER once you load the gui, it shows it as a x2 Max. So technically this card cannot support the max bandwidth, should you EVER get a chance to achieve it.
remember, these are spec maxes
PCIe 2.0 x2 = 1.25GB/s
PCIe 2.0 x4 = 2.5GB/s
SataIII = 600MB/s
So if you installed 4 x SataIII, in a perfect world you would need a bandwidth of 2.3GB/s. IF this card was a true x4, it would work However its only a x2.

For me, the bandwidth will only be an issue if you considering throwing SSD's at this. For me, i needed something to run 4 x Seagate NAS 3TB drives in my new Server 2012 R2 Essentials box. I have these drive in a raid 0 & i'm achieving reads & writes (of large files like MKV's, ISO's,) in the 500MB!
However i only need to achieve a level of 200MB/s as my DUAL TEAM NIC is the bottle neck to the server.

Other Thoughts: BOOT ISSUE -
You can flash your Raid Card in 2 ways to bypass getting stuck if your system doesn't boot
#1 - Goto Highpoint's website, register to access their online FAQ and search for FAQ0003.
This will still show the Raid BIOS but limit your access which allowed my system to boot clean. I have to use WebGui to configure raid
#2 - Flash the card with the following command, load.exe /e 0=0 rrxxx.xxx (were rrxxx.xxx is the rom name). This will totally bypass seeing your Raid Bios at boot. Makes system boot times FAST! (found command in a forum, i've tested, it works!)

Pros: I was running a raid5 off my motherboard was only getting 20 mb write and 10 read. Really bad speeds. Purchased the card and was drastic improvements. running crystal disk I got 150 write and 100 read. The card is very good

Other Thoughts: The card is very easy to set up. Recently reformed and all I had to do to get my pc to recognize it is install the drivers right off the cd. As soon as I installed the drivers my computer recognized it, everything was back, even the drive letter was the same. I reformat often so knowing that my 8TB raid is safe is great.

Pros: Good price for a Sata 6Gbit card that runs RAID 5. Good Tech Support for Issues. Simple and Easy to use Web Gui

Cons: Not Plug and Play Install. Complicated Process to reflash the card's firmware to get it to not boot with a Out of Memory Error on the Bios boot. Issue was resolved, but the trouble cost them an egg. It would be nice if they had a hot line for issues like this.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to setup a RAID 5 array with 3 x 3TB WD Red drives. I have an ASUS P6X58D Premium Motherboard, with an Intel i7 920. I plugged the card into an open slot and booted. System Froze at the Cards boot with a message Out of Memory in the top left corner. After Contacting High Point through their website on Friday, they got back to me on Monday.

They had me boot with the card plugged in with no drives attached. When the Card's Boot screen appears press End to skip it. When the OS boots update the driver using the one off their website. Just a warning for some reason when I downloaded their driver zip, and extracted it, all the files were green inidicating they were encrypted. When trying to update the driver I would get an Access Denied message. I had to goto properties on the drivers, advanced, and then uncheck encrypt. Then I was able to update the drivers successfully. After that I installed the Web Gui and used it to update the Card's Firmware. Then I shut down the computer, plugged my drives into the card and booted.

System came right now, I used the Web Gui to configure my drives into a RAID 5 array. Then rebooted again and windows recognized the array, and allowed me to setup the partition.

Currently migrating my data to the Array. I have 2.5 TB of data on a WD 3TB Green Drive, that I am migrating to the RAID 5 array consisting of 3TB WD red drives. Access times and write speeds seem good. Transfer speed started off at about 120 MB/sec writing to the array, but has now dropped to about 71 MB/sec as I hit patches of smaller files.

The setup was more tedious than I had wanted, but I have had good experiences with 2 of their other products in my servers, so I was willing to try them for the 640L. Glad to know it wasn't some compatability issue.

For others having problems with their cards use the support section of their website and contact them. It might take a day or 2 for them to get back to you, but they will help you. Granted I feel this should be easier than this, but in the end the card worked, and it performs much better than using the windows built in Software RAID options.

Pros: Inexpensive, 4-SATA Three Interfaces, RAID 5. Adequate for maximum drive space of 2TB or if you never need to boot from it.

Cons: Does not support UEFI boot, Boot from GPT, Boot from over 2TB drives, or boot over 2TB RAID configurations. It can only boot from MBR partition and then any drive space over 2TB is inaccessible. Software and not hardware based RAID. Requires UI interaction in OS to initialize RAID array,

Other Thoughts: Why in the world would anyone try to market something as "Supports 3TB and larger hard drives" when it is incapable of booting from anything larger than 2TB? Only the first 2TB are usable on large MBR disks. Yes, you can create a smaller MBR partition and boot from it but you will never be able to access anything over 2TB no matter what.

Pros: It's fast, even a six TB array only took about 18 hours to setup fully.

Easy to configure, very easy to understand with the slightest knowledge of RAID Arrays.

Works in Windows 7, Also works in Ubuntu 9.04, 10.04, 11.04 and 12.04.

Cons: Ubuntu Drivers must be installed, but once installed as a package (You need to find it as a package) it'll port from version to version. I installed this on Ubuntu 9.04 and have upgraded from version to version without issue, or without re-installing the drivers.

Other Thoughts: While I would love the Ubuntu drivers to just work out of the box, it took me (First time Ubuntu User at the time) about 2 hours to work out what needed to be done, what questions to ask Google, and how to install it.

Since then I have not had a problem using it. Although I do only use it as a storage Array, I do not have Ubuntu installed on the Array.
