5 out of 5 eggsCan power 4 devices at once.

Pros: Using this card in Linux / MS Server 2008 R2 systems to run four External 2.5 inch USB 3.0 hard drives at once. All other cards I've found require a internal power connector instead of taking the power from the PCI bus. Since these are connected to a server without additional internal power plugs (sata or molex) this card is the only one that can work. Just make sure your server can take a full height PCie x4 card.

Also extremely fast. Since the card uses 4 seperate controller chips (1 per USB port) it meas that your devices are sharing bandwidth.

Cons: No half height version for servers that can accommodate full height cards.

Other Thoughts: I can't address the other reviews that had issues with updating firmware on the card in order to get the card to work. Mine worked straight out of the box with no issues.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work

Pros: None

Cons: I installed the card in my computer and turned the computer on. Nothing. No BIOS screen, no Windows... nothing but fans spinning. I took the card out of the computer and it started as usual. I went to Highpoint's website and searched through the FAQ. Apparently, if you get a blank screen after installing this card, you need to flash the BIOS. The instructions on their website were cryptic. But, you have to create a bootable floppy -- who has a floppy drive??? Apparently, you can also futz around and create a bootable USB flash drive. I played with this option for hours and finally got frustrated with it. This is going back to NewEgg. Bummer.... because I really needed to add some more USB ports to my computer. I guess I'll just buy an external USB hub with all the extra wires that go along with it.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good...

Pros: This 2nd generation card uses (4) ASMedia controller chips to provide four independent (unshared) USB 3.0 connections. Initial tests show significant "actual use" throughput improvement over USB 2.0 though I don't yet have a drive fully capable of testing the limits of the card. So far, no hiccups or glitches to make me wonder whether or not it will provide reliable performance.

Cons: One might think that a product like this would be straightforward and just work, yet the world of USB 3.0 upgrades seems filled with products that aren't quite there yet. Though this card had no performance issues at all, installation was not entirely glitch free. After downloading the latest drivers and installing the card, Device Manager threw an error saying it could not find a driver for "Base System Device". Turns out every Windows user will get this error because High Point has not included a certain driver in its driver package for this card. I had to contact support to have them email me the missing driver. This is a long standing issue that High Point has yet to correct so it's going to cost them a star. That said, it is unclear whether the missing driver actually affects the operation of the card. Regardless, it's sloppy and makes Windows think there is a problem even if there is not.

Along these same lines, there is firmware available with the latest driver. I was unable to figure out how to tell whether or not I needed the firmware upgrade so I asked. High Point's answer: There's no way to tell. Not at boot up. Not in the hardware details. This didn't sound right so I asked again. I received the same answer. This does not seem like good design. They did assure me that all cards ship with the firmware posted so I did not need to worry about upgrading it. This was fortunate because the instructions for the firmware upgrade require a floppy drive [which I don't have] and DOS.

Other Thoughts: I've read complaints about High Point's support but my experience was good. The interface one is required to use is clunky but, other than that, the response time was very good and responses were clear. I had five or six exchanges over the span of two to three hours during a single work day.

Assuming nothing unexpected pops up, I expect to purchase several more of these cards.
