4 out of 5 eggsIt works, but not as quick as I thought it would be

Pros: I'm happy that it works, and is relatively easy to use. No hang-ups, even for a first time RAID card user. Cables are very flexible and it really helps when setting things up. Card has more features than I need, and it's priced well.

Cons: Maybe it's the firmware, the driver, or WHS 2011----but it can be very slow. With write caching disabled, may as well be on dial up to transfer files. Even with write caching enabled, it still falls short of the max transfer rate I've seen on other O/S servers I've built. It could be the drivers, firmware, drives (although I've seen better speeds with the same WD Reds when using zfs), or even the O/S.

My read speeds are at above 350MB/s, and below 400MB/s. Write speeds were painfully slow. All tested with HD utilities from the server, not through the network.

I hope it's just an issue with the WD Red drives- I expected more from a standalone RAID controller, even if it is a lower end unit than the commercial grade stuff many of the IT admins here use.

Other Thoughts: Updating drivers and firmware can be challenging for a noob; I still don't know if I'm using the latest because the website is informational overload. I wish I had bought the card with two cable adapters so I could better implement RAID the configurations this product offers.

5 out of 5 eggsTrustworthy

Pros: Great speed and reliability for the price! You can get about the same for about $100 more with the competition. Supported in FreeBSD and Linux kernels.

Cons: The BIOS setup is somewhat lacking in terms of features and interface but gets the job done. Making sure firmware up to date is a must. But these are to be expected and are definitely not show stoppers.

Other Thoughts: I first bought one of these in 2009 and it has been on ever since. First with 4x WD Raptor in RAID10 -- great! Then 4x Hitachi 2GB in JBOD for FreeNAS -- great! Now 4x Intel SSD in RAID0 -- great!

5 out of 5 eggsLove this card

Pros: True hardware raid.
Been running 4 1TBs in Raid 10 for a year now.
Never had a single hick-up.

Cons: Pricey for a home server, but hey. those 40$ raid cards kept killing my drives so after 3 drives in less than six months I went with a true hardware solution. worth it in the end.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the Price

Pros: Easy to install in Windows. Four ports with memory caches for this price is incredible. Good performance.

Cons: Like most RAID cards, it is difficult in Linux and VMWare to get running.
The single port/cable for all four connections limits the cable routing options.
It looks like this is the same card as the 8 port, but would have one more port with another four connections on it.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. If you are using Windows it is tough to justify a more expensive card. If you are using Linux or VMWare you may want to pursue a major vendor card.

5 out of 5 eggsjust another thumbs up

Pros: I've been running this under Ubuntu since late 2008 with the battery backup unit. Has performed flawlessly. Many of the other PC components including the motherboard have been replaced while the card just keeps on humming.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Rock solid. There's a reason they are still selling this unit.

5 out of 5 eggs5+ Years and No Issues

Pros: After 5+ years, I have not run into any issues with this raid card. I have had this card running a raid 5 array w/ hotspare since shortly after the purchase. I have had to rebuild the box due to a failed motherboard and a failed OS disk drive (not connected to the card). I've changed OS's 3 times (Win2k then Linux then Win2k8R2), swapped out 2 drives and re-partitioned the array once all without a hitch. In all this I haven't lost a single iota of data using this array. The fact that after 5+ years they still sell it speaks volumes to the quality of this product.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGood Workhorse

Pros: Cost Effective and FAST. I have been running a RAID 5 array since 2010 using WD RE3 drives. Not one hiccup or any other issue. Email of alerts is a great feature since I am rarely at this site. The only alerts I have ever recieved was due to power failure before I could convince them they needed a UPS.

Cons: None yet. Maybe that I don't have two???

Other Thoughts: Great product but be sure to use enterprise rated drives. Do so and you will be happy. Use a cheaper drive and you will not be so happy.

5 out of 5 eggs14 month update and still happy

Pros: RAID controller has worked perfectly for 14 months, using RAID0, RAID1, RAID5 and RAID10. It rebuilds arrays quickly and without a hitch.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I wish my SSD's I bought with it were working so well after 14 months.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: 256MB Cache
True hardware raid
Without the BBU, its 50 MBps faster than the Highpoint 2310
The initilization of the array was finished in half the time it took the Highpoint 2310
Web interface is well designed.
50 MBps faster with the BBU

Cons: 256MB Cache only useable with the battery backup unit, sold seperatly.
Web interface has alot of lag when refreshing/loading pages.
SLOW write without the BBU.
BBU requires alot of airflow (I was getting warning emails about BBU overheating daily untill I added an extra fan. My case now has 10 fans total o.O)
The alarm program that runs in the background eats up alot of CPU cycles. (25% of a Q6700 @ 2.66Ghz)

Other Thoughts: Check the compatibility list before buying.

4 out of 5 eggsI like this controller

Pros: Setup was easy. I was able to bring up a RAID 5 array very quickly. Software installed easily on a Win03 box. Extended the life of an HP G4 ML370.

Cons: The battery heats quickly. We were having AC problems in our data center shortly after the install and the software notified that the battery was over heating. Since the AC has been fixed, no problem.

Other Thoughts: I am using this controller with the Addonics 5SA RAID cage. I have one drive as a cold spare.
