The Intel RMS2AF040 is one of Intel’s new entry-level 6Gb/s SAS I/O modules with four 7-pin SAS/SATA connectors, which offers exceptional data protection and configuration flexibility at lower prices than enterprise-class RAID adapters. Designed for a wide selection of Intel Server Boards, this SAS/SATA RAID module offers features such as LSI’s SAS2008 6Gb/s I/O Controller (IOC), and delivers essential performance for 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s drive-based solutions.

  • newegg Excellent Performance without Hindering System Resources LSI SAS2008 I/O controller, PCI Express 2.0 x4 host allows for built-in hardware RAID 0, 1 and 10, plus firmware-based RAID 5 and 50 (RAID 5 and 50 utilize system resources to a limited extent).
  • newegg Exceptional Data Protection Supports data redundancy using SAS or SATA hard disk drives through mirroring and parity (RAID levels 1, 5) plus striping capability for spans (RAID levels 10, 50).
  • newegg SAS 6Gb/s Compliant Features hot-pluggable, SATA-compatible SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) ports to provide 6Gb/s data transfer rates for optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg Hot Spare Includes global hot spare support that automatically comes online to replace the first drive to fail on any array or disk group on the controller.
  • newegg System Design Flexibility 1U capable system board connects to the I/O expansion slot on Intel’s rack optimized server boards. This module can be used in Intel and third party chassis without the need for a riser card or low profile chassis cutout.

4 out of 5 eggsNot 100% compatible, but works well

Pros: Easily adds 4 extra SATA II or SAS ports to your server
Hardware RAID (LSISAS2008 chip)
Easy install
BIOS configuration
Very good in-OS configuration app
built-in support for megaraid_sas in Linux
Comes with cables
Supports SAS expanders (unconfirmed, but documented)

Cons: Doesn't work with all SATA II disks, specifically doesn't work with SAMSUNG HD103SI disks, but does work with SAMSUNG HD103SJ disks.
Software included on DVD is very old (version 4.x) so you need to go web to get the latest (version 6.x).
Intel download website address isn't listed in paperwork (but google finds downloadcenter easily where you can search for the specific drivers and software for your OS)
Documentation is wordy but not as easy to follow as it should be (in my opinion).
Extra cables are confusing and undocumented

Other Thoughts: I spent a while trying to figure out where to plug in the extra cables (labeled HSBP) into my motherboard, S1200BTL, and eventually decided to try without them because I couldn't get the cables to connect. Works fine without them, and I would have appreciated a note in the paper docs (or even the PDFs) saying that they might not be used.

After that I spent a while trying to figure out why only 1 of the 4 disks I had plugged in showed up. Eventually I figured out that the problem followed the disks and nothing else. This has been my experience with other SAS/SATA cards, not all disk drives handshake appropriately and therefore never switch over to SATA mode and instead just never come up. Beware if you're trying to add old disks to the system.

I haven't had a chance to do any performance testing, but it claims to have a PCIe 2.0 4x connection to the motherboard, so with only 4 ports it's likely to be plenty fast.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a PCIe v2.0 connection

Pros: Lots of SAS ports.
Hard to find 4 internal SAS ports on one card.

Cons: Can't use except on intel mother boards that have the special connection.

Other Thoughts: Sorry I couldn't use this board
