4 out of 5 eggsGood Buy

Pros: I installed this a while ago and have been using it in my personal file server. So far, it has been working great. Installed card, connected hard drives, created array, installed drivers/software. Everything went smothely.

Cons: Got one false alarm about a failing hard drive. Disconnected, then reconnected and it fixed itself.
Configuration could use some work, along with the web bios.

Other Thoughts: Setup 4 500GB HDs in Raid 5 without a hitch and has been working great. The server runs 24/7 and I have a LOT of data on there. I am very pleased with this.

Can't really comment on the speed of it as it's only used as a file server and don't really care much about the speed, but seems no slower than my other hard drives that are hooked up to my mobo.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware

Pros: Non

Cons: We purchased this card for a production server just a little over a year ago. For the first few months it worked just fine then it just started to drop random drives. Twice the dropped drives were actually bad but when it would drop the drive the server would be rendered completely useless. The card would shut down both of the arrays and the users could no longer access the files until we rebuilt the array. We finally called it quits and bought a better card look at the A*****c 2820.

Other Thoughts: I'll be driving through Fort Collins Colorado here soon maybe I'll stop by and give the card back to them.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy Install and Setup

Cons: The heatsink on the proc gets quite warm. This has possibly damaged the card I bought as it is randomly failing drives.

Other Thoughts: I have (4) 500GB drives setup in a RAID 5. Two weeks ago, it started randomly failing drives. Bought two 320's to back my data up to and it promptly failed both of them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Controller for the price

Pros: 6 port SATA HW RAID
Price

Cons: Bios not very user friendly

Other Thoughts: Simple install under linux. Drivers automatically installed.
Configured a RAID 5 with 6 320GB drives. Works flawlessly.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat controller

Pros: Great throughput - love it!

Cons: With my enclosure, the cables hit the cover when I closed the box so the sata connectors could shift. Ended up getting 90 degree SATA snap in cables (from Newegg) and all is well

3 out of 5 eggsOk controller

Pros: It has excellent OS support and is very stable. Works in 32-bit PCI slots.

Cons: Card has very poor performance compared to today's lineup of controllers. This controller is 4 year old technology, and is enormously overpriced for the performance and scalability you receive.

Other Thoughts: I had one of these controllers in a production server, and like a dummy, ground looped it and killed it. Tried ordering a replacement twice from newegg and both times they sent me the 4 port card instead of this 6 port. Customer service yanked me around for about 3 weeks before I finally walked and picked one up elsewhere. Beware, before ordering this controller from newegg, they seem to have inventory control issues.

To be fair, newegg has always taken care of me and usually offers great service and value, but they royally dropped the ball on this one.

Look at 3ware or areca for much better price to performance value.

4 out of 5 eggsGood card, minor cons

Pros: Fast RAID card. Easy configuration. Extremely reliable. Very Linux compatible.

Cons: 2TB limit to logical drive size even with the latest firmware. I had to use LVM in order to create a volume of 2.5TB.

5 out of 5 eggsSTILL EXCELLENT AFTER 3 YRS

Pros: FIRST PURCHASE CONTROLLER IN 2003 TO POPULATE 1ST MB PCI-X BUS. RUNS INSTANTLY AFTER INITIATION AND FORMAT WITHOUT PROBLEM. NOW JUST PURCHASED SECOND TO POPULATE 2ND PCI-X BUS, ALSO EXCELLENT AND VERY "EASY" TO MANAGE. MY SYSTEM IS RUNNING 16 DRIVES TOTAL. 4 250GB WD RE EDITION AS RAID 10 BOOT ON PCI-E X4, 6 320GB WD RE2 EDITION AS RAID 5 FOR VIDEO EDITING, 6 500GB WD RE2 EDITION AS RAID 10 FOR STORING VERY CRITICAL DATA. I AM AMAZED HOW VISTA 64 INSTANTLY RECOGNIZED THE CARD AND I DID MUCH LESS WORK TO RECONSTRUCT THE SYSTEM WITHOUT DRIVER HAZZLE.

Cons: THE CARD'S PRICE HASN'T DROPPED A DIME IN 3 YEARS. ITS STRONG BUILT AND HARDWARE PROCESSOR XOR ENGINE GIVE IT THAT REASON THAT IS JUSTIFIABLE. LSI LOGIC IS A WELL KNOWN OEM RAID CTL MANUFACTURER, BUT ITS PRODUCT IS BIT HIGH PRICE. NEXT BEST VENDOR IS ADAPTEC. THIS CARD BEAT THE C R A P OUT OF MY TYAN S2915 NVIDIA ONBOARD CTL WHICH ALWAYS RANDOMLY DROPPING OFF DRIVES FOR NO REASON.

Other Thoughts: IT WISH THAT LSI CAN MAKE THEM IN PCI-E CONNECTOR FOR A 8 PORT VERSION BUT STILL PRICE AROUND $300.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect card

Pros: Installed this in an old Compaq Proliant ML530, plugged in 6 750GB SATAs, installed OS and it is still running perfectly.

Cons: Could only make maximum 2TB partions in controller BIOS. But that isn't that bad of a con.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't do it on a 32 bit PCI Bus

Pros: Great product on a 64 bit PCI bus.

Cons: I had hoped that the speed issue wasn't going to be as bad as people say, but it is. I have a Linux PVR I'm using this in and on in a 32 bit PCI bus, its SLLOOOW. If you have a way to get a 64 bit PCI MB, do it, but otherwise find another way.
