3 out of 5 eggsDecent for the price, but write speeds are flat out horrendous!

Pros: Works with P35 chipset (unlike 3Ware and Adaptec's competing products)
Nice price

Cons: Write speeds are awful- we're talking over 3 hours to copy a 35GB file.
Gets kind of hot.

Other Thoughts: The write speeds on this card are pathetic. I built an 8x500GB RAID-5 on this card and after FULLY initializing the array, began to copy over roughly 2.5TB of data from several WD My Book USB drives. It took me over a week straight of nearly 24-7 copying to get the data over. Just yesterday I had a 35GB Acronis True Image backup to copy over and it took over 3 hours. By comparison, with an external USB drive connected to my laptop, it took about a half hour. SAD!!! Once the data's there, the READ speeds are decent, but not nearly as quick as my Areca array. After screwing with several other PCI-E x4 cards that didn't work with my Asus P5K Deluxe though, I was tired of restocking fees and was just happy to get one that worked so I stuck with it. Just make sure you've got a ton of time if you want to copy stuff to it.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't handle RAID5

Pros: Acceptable cost for an 8 port controller. PCI-express is a big plus. Does RAID10 and 0 like a charm.

Cons: I purchased this card to run a RAID5 array of 4xWD5000YS hard drives. The cards RAID5 performance was terrible, I was getting 30% less performance than with my onboard RAID. LSI "24/7 Tech support" is a joke. Apparantly there are humans there to answer at all hours but the actual support team is 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Eastern Time. When I took time off of work to call them about their product I was given the runaround for 2 weeks and eventually told to return the card if I was still not satisfied. I am doing so now. I've always heard good things about LSI products, but this is a big disappointment.

Other Thoughts: For testing, I tried setting the drives into RAIDs 0 and 10, which it handled like a dream. 140 MB/sec average read speeds. And yes, I did do a full initialization after each array reconfiguration. For some reason it would never allow me to configure a RAID1 array. Also note that the card would not work (and kept the system from POSTing) if installed in an SLI PCI-express slot. I had to move my video card and use the non-sli PCI-Express slot for the RAID controller.
