The LSI SAS 9211-8i host bus adapter provides the greatest available throughput to internal server storage arrays through eight internal 6Gb/s ports, driving up to 256 SAS and SATA physical devices. This HBA offers dynamic SAS functionality including dual-port drive redundancy and SATA compatibility. Utilizing two internal x4 SFF8087 Mini-SAS connectors, the low-profile SAS 9211-8i is an excellent fit for 1U and 2U servers.

The SAS 9211-8i utilizes the embedded CPU in the LSI SAS2008 controller to perform integrated RAID 0, 1, 1E and 10 operations for reliable data protection with high-availability. The result is an ultra-thin, low-overhead device driver communicating over the x8 PCI Express 2.0 host interface. By reducing RAID code overhead, this HBA delivers high-speed READ/WRITE performance, making it well suited for medium to high-capacity internal storage applications.

  • newegg SAS 6Gb/s Compliant The LSI 9211-8i features hot-pluggable, SATA-compatible SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) ports to provide 6Gb/s data transfer rates for optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg RAID Support The LSI 9211-8i supports multi-level RAID configuration including RAID 0, 1, 1E and 10 for better performance, enhanced data security and flexible capacity upgrades..
  • newegg PCI Express 2.0 x8 Interface The LSI 9211-8i features the PCI Express 2.0 x8 interface which provides sufficient throughput and full-duplex operation for enhanced performance.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great! Very fast!

Pros: I'm using this HBA card with 4 4tb western digital red drives in a software raid 6 with debian 7.

So far I haven't seen any issues and am seeing around 280 mB/s reads and around 240 mB/s writes.

Cons: A little expensive, but you get what you pay for!

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 4 months

Pros: Plugs in and sata drives immediately recognized. No configuration required if all you need is sata drive expansion.

Cons: Just quit working after 4 months of use. My linux raid 6 suddenly failed on all 8 drives attached to this controller. I do not recommend this for file server reliability.

Other Thoughts: I used this in a linux raid 6 array with 9 drives 3Tb WD red drives, 8 of which were on this controller. Initially everything went smooth. The server ran flawlessly for 4 months, then suddenly the controller failed. I swapped pci ports with the video card and no change, so I doubt it was the MB, but plan to test with another linux box. Asus p8z77 MB, Xeon E3 processor, Seasonic ss-660xp power supply.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat controller

Pros: Fixed problems with supermicro marvel controller on ZFS linux machines. Best low end ZFS controller so far.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Ideal JBOD

4 out of 5 eggsFast and Stable

Pros: There is really not a lot to say about this card, other than (1) it works, (2) it's stable and (3) it's fast. You're going to be limited by your OS and the drives themselves, and there's no fancy cache memory to cheat with, but if you're running ZFS or similar on a NAS box you don't want those things. It's also inexpensive, which is a big bonus.

Cons: It's NOT for those who want on-board RAID or battery-backed cache. If that's your thing then buy an ARECA card, stuff it full of memory and add the battery unit to it.

For host-software-based disk storage (e.g. ZFS file stores on a Unix box), however, this is the cat's meow.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality

Pros: - Easily flashes from IR (Integrated Raid) mode to IT (Initiator Target) mode.
- Excellent performance (for class of card).
- Well supported by FreeBSD (for ZFS).
- Handles 8 drives in IT mode with ease.

Cons: (none)

Other Thoughts: For the purpose of ZFS, this card is superb. Works well and works consistently. Would purchase this card again.

5 out of 5 eggsYes it's Bootable

Pros: Card boots just fine, I have two 15000 rpm 256 gig sas drives in a raid 0 striped array, wie 6.5.

Cons: For some reason I can't access my raid controller on my ASUS crosshair 4 formula with this installed, though not really a con. It is the motherboard, not the controller that has the issue.

Other Thoughts: Worth the cash. Works flawlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes not support HDD spin down

Pros: Compatible with Consumer (non-server) motherboards.

Cons: This is a lower line (HBA) controller and does not support HDD spindown during drive inactivity. (older versions of firmware supposedly support HDD power down but LSI has been unable to confirm last version this was supported)

Other Thoughts: After much reading and many calls, you have to purchase one of LSIs MegaRaid cards starting with the 9260 line on up in order to get the "Dimmer Switch" power down feature. The next thing to watch is that not all of the 9260+ cards support JBOD (which means you would have to run under RAID). The 9265 card DOES support JBOD, does support Intels RES2SV240 expander(per intel site) and does support HDD power down. So for those not familiar with these levels of cards you will have a number of things to watch for.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with ESXi

Pros: The Card is very well priced and you get what you pay for.

Cons: This card has the slowest read / write speed I have ever seen: This card was bought to be used as a raid 10 on a supermicro motherboard running esxi 5.0 - I created 1 raid 10 data store and 4 single data stores (8 drives total). On the single drive data store the speed was bearable at best.

Other Thoughts: I ended up RMA the two cards and purchased the LSI 9260 -8i, the speed is the best I have ever seen in a raid 10 and I will recommend this card and give it 5 eggs. I forgot to mention the 9211 takes about 3 days for consistency - the 9260 was ready in about 30 sec.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Solid HBA
Great Linux Driver Support
Proper on-card RAID
RAID 1+0 helps me sleep at night

Cons: No RAID5 support (I knew this going in)

Other Thoughts: Used this to replace a Highpoint card that corrupted a drive on a Centos6 install. Linux drivers are built into all mainline kernels and are rock solid.

3x500Gb WD RE4's in RAID 1+0 gives redundancy and great throughput. Just pair it with a mini-SAS to SATA breakout cable.

In short, if you're looking for a non-fakeraid card, to handle smaller arrays (or just to install your OS onto), this card is in a class of it's own.

4 out of 5 eggsBootable?

Pros: This may be a dumb question, but I'm not familiar with HBAs: Is this card bootable?

Cons: I've found lots of information on this card, but can't seem to find anywhere it conclusively states whether or not one can set up a simple RAID0 array on this card and install the OS on it.
