5 out of 5 eggsTons better than my mobo ports

This review is from: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: Does what it says. Linux compatible.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I was having serious performance issues using a RaidZ filesystem on my motherboard ports with four drives. This card more than solved the problem. Worked like a charm.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible RAID controller, reminder of how bad NewEgg service is

This review is from: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: It comes with cables and you can connect all your drives to the RAID controller card with it.
It worked out of the box, I could boot to Windows 7 setup with it.
It's green, so it must be eco friendly

Cons: While the read performance was great on the RAID 10 SSD drive array, the write performance was as good as a IDE hard drive from back in the early 90's. I was getting around 30MB a sec.

Tech support confirmed the problem, and said they had the same performance issues. No real fix other than purchasing a new card.

At first I didn't notice it that much, ran the card for a few weeks until I started putting virtual machines on my system. That's when I noticed there was an issue.

NewEgg should stop selling this card, I got better performance using my BIOS RAID.

Other Thoughts: It took me awhile to come to this realization, I didn't benchmark the card right out of the box. NewEgg wouldn't take the card back because I threw away the $1 cardboard box. I purchase over a dozen different things a month from NewEgg, spend thousands of dollars. I can't keep all these different boxes in my office for 30 days in case something happens.
They wouldn't take the card back, I provided information from LSI confirming the card is a paper weight, case #, a tech I spoke with.

So the moral of the story is, hold onto that $1 cardboard box because NewEgg treats that as if you threw away the actual product. In my case, I threw away over $300. Now I have to get the card that actually DOES work and that's the LSI 9260 8i. Should I get it from NewEgg?

If this was my personal money, not the companies - I'd be furious right now. I'm still mad, but just not like the Hulk mad.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat SAS performance. SATA, though........

This review is from: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: The SAS performance on this card is very good if you don't need a cache-capable HBA. I get decently low read and write latencies in ESXi 5.0. Also great read/write transfer rates (~35,000KB/sec) with SAS drives.

Cons: The SATA performance in an abomination. the maximum SATA read/write performance I got from a Seagate Constellation ST9500530NS drive was 600KB/Sec. At first, I thought it was the drive, but after moving it onto an on-board SATA controller, the drive performed much better (~20,000KB/sec). I assume that the HBA's implementation of the SATA command protocol is not up to par with it's respectable SAS implementation.

Other Thoughts: Just a warning to those of you looking for a card to be your one stop shop for SAS and SATA, it might be best to look elsewhere. YMMV, though.

PC specs:
MSI H67MA-E45
Intel Core i5-2300
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB
Intel Gigbit CT Desktop Adapter
LSI 9211-8i
Four SAS drive split into two on each cable bundle
1x 73GB 15k Savvio SFF
3x 146GB 10K Savvio SFF
Onboard SATA connection:
1x 500GB Seagate Constellation SFF
OS: VMWare ESXi 5.0 (aka VMWare vSphere 5 Hypervisor)
8 VMs Win2008R2 64-bit for email/web/internal and external DNS/File/terminal/etc services.

5 out of 5 eggsSmokin HBA

This review is from: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: Very fast, I'm running a Seagate Chetah 15k rpm via SAS. I am also running a pair of Western Digital 640GB SATA 6G/s on a RAID 0.

Cons: The additional bios adds to the boot time.

Other Thoughts: Make sure and order the correct cables for this HBA.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card, consider the bare version

This review is from: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: - Paired with a decent CPU, can push an array of SSDs far past most other controllers.
- A relatively cheap way to get into 8 ports of 6 GB/s SAS/SATA.

Cons: - Included cables have molded power & data and can't be used with most enclosures.
- Runs kind of hot when you pack two in a case right next to each other (8-12W each, depending on usage).

Other Thoughts: The kit version of this card included two breakout cables which have molded power & data plugs that can't be used with most enclosures. This isn't readily apparent from the product images (though you can see it if you look REAL close). Unless you're using this card without a backplane, get the cheaper version that comes without cables and buy your cables separately.
