1 out of 5 eggsRun away as fast as you can

Pros: Didn't burst into flames

Cons: We run a small data center. Most of our servers run the HighPoint 2720 cards, which have run flawlessly for the last 24 months. They are also surprisingly fast, especially for their low cost. One of our server techs told us LSI makes a better and faster card so we purchased this to give it a try. What a mistake!!! We tested Raid 1, Raid 5 and Raid 6 on this card, with multiple configurations using 12 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives. Raid 1 gives us 30-40mb/s transfer rates- WOW! Raid 5 & Raid 6 won't transfer faster then 18mb/s!!

Other Thoughts: We tried calling LSI support, to no success. We then sent a number of emails requesting support. It took LSI THREE DAYS to reply to us... to make matters worse they told us the issue we were having was either due to user error (LOL) or to bad hard drives. All 12 drives are brand new, and are now running extremely fast in another server. Don't just stay away from this card- RUN AWAY as fast as you can!!!

Here are the cards we purchased to replace this. They are giving us consistent transfer rates of 300mb/s plus.

4 out of 5 eggsNice so far..

Pros: Up to 16 drives can be setup with the proper 1 to 4 fanout cables.
Numerous raid configs available.

Cons: Gui bios looks very outdated used to set up array.

Other Thoughts: Set up Raid 5 array with 5 - 2TB WD Red drives and it built it in about 4 hours. Make sure you use the proper drive types for this.. and any raid card. Some drives handle their own error checking and if they do not report back to the controller within a certain time period this can make the controller card "think" the drive has failed. Not a fault of the LSI card.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat features, poor performance

Pros: - Has 16 ports on one card.
- Can support RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60/00.
- SATA/SAS III 6Gbps support.
- Great RAID 0/1/10 performance.

Cons: TERRIBLE performance for any RAID configuration that uses parity, (RAID 5/6/50/60)!!! VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS CARD. In Windows Server 2012, copying large 40GB+ VHD files from a RAID 10 array to a RAID 5, speeds started off great (300Mbps+) until it ran out of memory (OS caching files), then the speed dropped to below 5Mbps.

Other Thoughts: I installed this card in a new server I am building with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition, using a nice Supermicro mobo. I was hoping to be able to use RAID 50 or 60.

The card works fine with Win7/2008r2 Server drivers. Any arrays that do not use parity seem to have good performance. I had 4 drives that were all on one port suddenly disappear and it killed the array. They were all on the same port on the card. Seemed like the entire port had died and came back. I had to rebuild that array again. Seems fine so far.

Building any array, I keep losing drives sporadically. The drives don't actually die, but the card seems to think they are no longer there.

All drives are either WD Black or WD Enterprise SATA drives. Some new, some from another server about 1yr old. Test the "dead" drives on another machine and passes all tests.

I have updated the card's firmware to the latest, but it doesn't seem to have helped.

Overall I am very disappointed with this card. I thought I was stepping up from a HighPoint card to an LSI. So far, the HighPoint cards outperform this LSI. If I can't get this issue resolved through tech support, I will avoid using any LSI RAID products again. I get better RAID 5 performance in a software RAID from the OS.

5 out of 5 eggsBest overall in 16 port choices

Pros: I've owned this LSI 16i controller for over a year now and have been astonished by it's capabilities. I've migrated RAID configurations several times this year alone for greater data redundancy, and this LSI product handled it all. Keep in mind that the compatability list from LSI regarding enclosures and drives are limited. But I ignored that list and configured drives and enclosures as I needed and have had NEAR 100% success. (not complete success mind you). It handles my Seagate SAS, SATA and OCZ Vertex RAID configurations flawlessly. Polling, consistency check's, Controller & Drive cache choices, power management options and the like will keep your drives healthy and performing great for a long time. The list of features is long, so visit the LSI website and check it out as needed. Oh yeah, you can boot from any array you create on this controller.

Cons: Ram not upgradeable.

No area for asset tag information(such as adding serial numbers and invoices for drive warranty).

Megaraid Storage Managment software is BULKY and slow to launch within the OS even if it is feature rich.

Other Thoughts: This product doesn't ship with any Mini SAS/SATA fanout cables. Shop around on Newegg or... even elsewhere as I have. QUALITY cables are *critical* for best reliability.

Also I would post RAID benchmarks with ATTO,AS SSD and the like but noone would believe them. Of course real world performance is what is of importance and this controller delivers.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade from my dell Perc 6i

Pros: 16 ports without expander
up to 128 drives with additional expander
Cachecade ssd+Hdd capable (addon $)

Cons: Does not come with cables, but with many configurations of outputs I can see why

Other Thoughts: Wish HDD prices were cheaper. Once they are again this will go into a Norco hotswap case instead of my desktop server.
