4 out of 5 eggsVery VERY nice RAID Controller!

Pros: I replaced an Adaptec 6405 with this LSI 9266 8i. I'm VERY HAPPY!

It supports Windows sleep (S3), at least on my computer. The Adaptec 6405 did not.

Performance, it's 1.5 to 2 to 3x times faster then the Adaptec 6405 depending on the benchmark and cache settings used during the benchmark.

Compatibility. LSI has a longer list of tested devices on their HCL.

Compact size, it's smaller than I thought it would be.

The MegaRAID Storage Manager for Windows is VERY VERY NICE. Better than the Adaptec software.

Cons: Compatibility, the vendor will provide limited support if your motherboard is not on the HCL. See other thoughts on how I made this work on my ASUS M5A99X EVO.

Price. However I made the conscious decision to buy this model for my workstation and I had a 20% off a promo code. What until NewEgg has a promo code for Raid controllers before you buy a controller in this price range. The 9266 4i model would have suited me fine in the short term, but long term I will have more than 4 drives.

Heat, but I knew that too. Touching the heat sink will burn your finger, literally.

The Webbios isn't the best. However the MegaRAID Storage Manager for Windows is VERY VERY NICE.

Other Thoughts: I replaced an Adaptec 6405 with this LSI 9266 8i. I'm VERY HAPPY!

System Specs -
CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo)
Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO
Drives: 4 Samsung 830 128GB SSD
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32 GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) overclocked via motherboard to the advertised speed.
Graphics: ASUS EAH6770 DC SL/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 in PCI 2 Express slot 1
Raid Controller: LSI LSI00296 (9266-8i Kit) PCI-Express 2.0 x8 Low Profile SATA / SAS MegaRAID SAS RAID Controller in PCI Express 2 x16 slot 2 (operating at x8 I believe)

Getting into the WebBIOS to configure the array required setting the MB BIOS “Option ROM Messages” setting to “Force BIOS” and the “Interrupt 19 Capture” option to “Enable”. Only after doing that would I see the 9266 option ROM during the computer post. I had to disable many optional on board devices and ROMs to get my system stable. I am slowly turning back on the on board devices. I have left off my 3GB JMicron controller, but I was able to turn back on the AMD 950 SB Raid Controller, so I am running both Raid controllers at the same time (for now).

This is a beast of a Raid Controller. I've previously bench marked the AMD SB950 on board RAID and the Adaptec 6405 controller using my 4 SSDs. Once I started benchmarking my 4 SSDs using the LSI 9266 I decided what's the point, it's CLEARLY faster. 1.5 to 2 to 3x faster depending on config.

If you can afford this, go for it. The 9266 4i is cheaper obviously. The 9265 series is supposed to be the same performance wise as the 9266 without the extra options etc.
