SYBA SY-ATA8212-2R PCI IDE Controller
- Pros: - Cheap
- In theory, it would allow someone to extend the use of an old HDD on a modern board.
* Note: I installed and used this card on a system running Win Vista 64-bit, for those unsure of its vista support. * System: (Hardware used before the card failed) M/B: ASRock P43Twins1600 CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2220 2.4GHz RAM: 4x1GB(4GB) OCZ Platinum Revision 2 (4-4-4-15@1.9V) GPU: XFX GeForce 8600GT STD PSU: Turbo Link 450ATX-12V 450W (+12V @ 20A) HDD: (Used with the card controller) 1) Seagate Barracuda 120GB IDE 2) Seagate Barracuda 80GB IDE 3) WD Caviar 40GB IDE HDD: (Used with the onboard controller) 1) WD Caviar 160GB SATA II 2) WD Caviar 250GB SATA II OS: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit
- Cons: * Background: Purchased to allow me to keep my old IDE HDD's while I upgraded my system to a newer setup at the beginning of August.
- On first install it seemed to have problems detecting HDD's, appeared to be the first connection (Blue connector/J1) on the card, but after re-inserting the IDE and Molex connectors on the HDD's and on the card the 2 HDD's on the connection were detected, but it would sometimes lose them if the cables were messed with, but since I don't normally mess with the inside of my case on a regular basis, I wouldn't return it for just that.
- Card worked fine up until November, then I started to have data transfer failures and files on the HDD's on the card would become corrupt. No driver updates or changes to the card were made to alter the performance, it should also be noted that the HDD's on the card would be used for data transfer for periods lasting over an hour, not really a valid excuse to fail, except when considering the price and manufacturer.
- Other Thoughts: - Return Policy on this item seems to only be 30-days, the manufacturer doesn't seem to supply a return or repair policy, can't say for sure, didn’t really check in-depth, and never tried to contact the company.
- I do find the controversy over the CD/DVD Rom support kind of funny, when I bought the card there were plenty of signs that said it doesn't support CD/DVD ROMs, only HDD's, but after reading the reviews I did actually look at the back of the box and must say it’s kind of funny. "[Devices Support]: > Hard Drives, ATAPI CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CDS-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, LS-120, MO, Tape and ZIP Devices
*Specifications may differ from chipsets" I can only assume that the box is generic and is used with other versions.
- Card lasted for me about 3 months, then it became unreliable, I wanted to buy a new drive anyway so I took the opportunity to purchase a new 1TB HDD and went ahead and bought a new IDE Controller Card, the Rosewill RC-200 which newegg had on sell for $12.
Do not buy this product!
- Pros: None!
- Cons: Right out of the box it did not work properley.
The product specifications as listed on the box and newegg.com were false. As stated on the back of the box in fine print " * specifications may differfrom chipsets" every specification on the box had a star. The product did not suport CD drives of any kind. This product is a complete waste of money. Do not buy this product.
- Other Thoughts: Although the information on the newegg site was false as to the actual product specifications what was posted on the site and on the box were exact. Most likeley what has happened is both newegg and myself were misled by the fineprint on the back of the box.
Useless
- Pros: None
- Cons: Worst ever, doesnt support my cd-dvd drives. Which i dont think it says anywhere in here that says it doesnt. waste of my money going to refund. only use for hard drive guys no cd or dvd drives. useless for me right now.
