2 out of 5 eggsso-so product

Pros: the ide port works. however, this adds a few seconds to boot time

Cons: Installing drivers was a pain because it was difficult to stop windows from installing its drivers. NOTE that it's a sata 1 port. When i plugged in a sata 2 dvd drive into the upper port and booted I constantly got BSOD. Removed drive - no problem. Put it back same issue. I moved the connection to the lower sata port and it booted fine. However shutdown took several minutes as opposed to less than 30 seconds before installing (asus z97-a i7-4690k win 7-64 bit). Could no nothing to get shutdown back to normal while dvd drive was attached. A work around was to move a HDD (a backup drive) to the card's lower sata port and hook the dvd drive to a MB sata port. The boot still takes a few extra seconds but shutdown is back to normal

Other Thoughts: buy something else. why not sata 2 ports? why BSOD when sata drive connected to upper port but not lower port. nothing in the brief manual tells you to do this. other possibility is upper port is bad.

2 out of 5 eggsbarely ok

Pros: Allows me to use a ZIP drive. My old MB with an IDE port went to the computer parts graveyard and I had no cheap way to retrieve important info stored on ZIP disks. Had no problem installing the card driver installed automatically (i think because no sata port was being used)

Cons: Next had an extra sata cd drive. so uninstalled driver and device thru device manager. Rebooted. Followed instructs to install non raid driver. Rebooted but got BSOD. Shutdown. Unhooked sata.. Reboot no problem. Uninstalled driver. Hooked up sata. Rebooted thinking maybe problem with driver install. Kept getting BSOD. finally switch sata port and viola it booted and able to install driver. -1 star for poor documentation.

Next problem once sata cd drive running. Shut down took almost 3.5 minutes. Normal on my 17-4000k box less than 1/2 minute. did an uninstall/reinstall - no change. Unhooked sata. shutdown back to normal. My old Vista laptop 1.9GHz shut down in less than 3.5 minutes. -2 stars because card is not fully functional. and yes i did check for updated drivers but they appear to be for raid setup.

Other Thoughts: maybe SYBA can provide info on how to correct the slow shutdown

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the issues you have experienced with this controller card.

Please note that since this card utilizes a RAID BIOS installing the non-RAID driver will cause issues similar to what you experienced.

Our tech support team is happy to assist you with installing and configuring this device for your system.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well, great communication

Pros: When I first got it, it did not work. I emailed tech support and within one hour got a reply. They said to install newer BIOS on the motherboard. I did that, and the controller card now works great. I needed the PATA ports and the SATA are nice to have. The price was great, it works very well, and I am very impressed with the communication because it was both prompt and correct.

Cons: The only thing that I can say is that the SATA are not the faster ports. See comment below.

Other Thoughts: If one needs fast 6 Gb/S SATA, Syba makes several boards that do that. I bought the one with 4 SATA ports and it works very well and it is fast too. I bought this board because I needed PATA ports (the older kind with the ribbon cable)

There are many companies that import product, but few that stand behind it well and give good tech support. Syba has earned my business. Newegg finds good companies to work with, and Newegg has earned my business for being right there to support me.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with Windows 7 64-bit

Pros: Works right out of the box. Windows loaded the 64-bit driver automatically. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. With that I was able to use an old Maxtor SATA/150 PCI card. Unfortunately there is no 64-bit driver for this old card (yes I looked).

BTW, I have Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack which has both 32-bit & 64-bit disks.

1 out of 5 eggsstrange problems

Pros: SATA ports worked when I tried them. It *did* boot from CDROM in legacy mode on the UEFI mobo and even says CDROM on the boot ROM screen by the firmware version even though SYBA says CDROM boot is not supported. IDE CDROMs worked some of the time, on some discs.

Cons: I got this specifically to squeeze the last life out of a pair of ATAPI DVD burners using a single IDE cable (the Gigabyte H81M-HD3 has no IDE but PCI), and it almost worked out. But the first sign of trouble was when trying to copy an audio CD, I found the drive would fail to find the disc and even Explorer would hang up the [My] Computer window trying to read and update its icons for the drives. If there was an audio disc in when the boot ROM was detecting media, it would stall for many seconds before the UEFI could even start reading hard disks. Other kinds of discs worked, especially DVDs. The SYBA support tech suggested PCI is too old & slow a bus for this task (even though PCI IDE adapters & RAID cards are older than DDR, PCI isn't magically getting slower, and SYBA specifically designed and marketed a card for the purpose) and the SYBA forum had nothing to say for months. Recently I attempted to burn a Linux ISO to a blank 700M CD but something in this failing configuration kept Nero Express from even getting to the point where it would show a window, and Infracorder and ImgBurn threw errors while trying to find burners as well. I just replaced it with a pair of IDE-SATA adapters and all the problems evaporated. I seriously considered doing that in the first place and I'm rather sorry I didn't, because the 10-15 USD difference would have cost me a little educational experience but saved a ton of frustration.

Other Thoughts: I can't remember a drive choking specifically on audio discs or a controller being able to make it do so, before this. It's bizarre. I thought about downgrading the ROM to something that matched the chip but the flash utility couldn't find the card. I wondered if it needed to be put into an older PC but never tried it because I wanted to not get further in. It might have been alright to just keep audio discs away from the machine but then Windows started spontaneously stalling on a Vista-like boot screen for minutes at a time instead of just booting in 20 seconds like usual, but only a few times before I decided the card had to go. If that happens again now that the card is out I will be very surprised and make a note here (if I even can).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for your dissatisfaction with the quality of this controller card.

The PCI bus is perfectly fine for this type of transfer without many problems.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: It didn't catch on fire?

Cons: Cannot use *ANY* hard drive manufactures utils - drives detected as SCSI, not sata. Horrible copy speeds - copying from 2 drives it took 10, yes, thats right TEN MINUTES to copy 1gb. Lost $20 because its going to cost too much to return

Other Thoughts: Tried every combination..swapping pci slots, drivers from VIA, drivers from SYBA's site...all useless bloated garbage raid tools and drivers.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

For this controller card's chipset, no utilities are needed to manage the RAID.

Configuration is managed in the BIOS screen when pressing ctrl+m on POST.

Transfer speed has many dependencies such as the hard drives, PCI bus bandwidth, controller card, and drivers.

We are more than happy to provide all of our customers with a prompt exchange whenever a product becomes defective.

SYBA offers an online RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATE REVIEW

Pros: WORKS AFTER RESETTING BOOT ORDER IN BIOS

Cons: IT CHANGED MY BIOS TO BOOT TO IT INSTEAD OF MY BOOT HD. IT LOCKED UP MY COMPUTER ON BOOT BECAUSE OF THIS. TOOK AWHILE TO FIGURE THIS OUT

Other Thoughts: DRIVERS WERE HARD TO INSTALL TRIED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE CORRECT DRIVERS WERE INSTALLED. THE SETUP PROGRAM DID NOT WORK I HAD TO LOAD THE DRIVERS MANUALLY. THIS TOOK LONGER THAN IT SHOULD. FIX THE SETUP PROGRAM GUYS. USING WIN 7

4 out of 5 eggsTested fine with NAS4Free

Pros: Works under NAS4Free/BSD

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I bought this card to stick in an older machine (P 4, 2.6) that was to be used with SATA drives as a file server--the machine's mobo did not have SATA headers. The set up was smooth: NAS4Free was able to utilize the drive hooked to this card, and we set up the system. I can't comment on things like throughput, or hardware RAID set up, since the machine only had one drive and is not now in my possession--I just helped with set-up. But it did result in a functional file server, so anyone wanting to use this in an older, SATA-headerless machine to set up a file server that runs on NAS4Free, should be able to do so successfully.
